PSU question/puzzle...UPDATE: working, but now has bad sound

Post by soupbones »

So I decided to replace my old NVS 4000 with a new RS Psu. But I've hit one small hurdle:

On my original PSU, it had a cable running from the AC 100IN to a small AC Out.

On the new RS PSU, it doesnt seem to have the small AC Out port.

Any ideas? I've attached a picture for reference.

Well, I simply left the cable and decided to power up without it. Everything works great, except I get a loud buzzing sound thru the speakers and can barely hear the game audio... weird.

What are you doing with the NVS4000?

Was planning on selling it - you interested? If you figure out my sound problem, I'll give it to you, you just pay for shipping :)

The NVS needs a little love though - the CP button needs a new spring I think, because it won't stay clicked in. The psu is passing power to my cab, but something was wrong and I wasn't getting pic/sound. But like I said, it IS powering on my cab.

I'm no electrician, so I'm not sure if it's an easy fix.

Look around at the bottom of your cab, I have a smaller, Not JVS ready PSU for my New Astro, and I have a cable that sized that should fit there.

That being said, what else can you tell me? What game are you running, how is the audio wired?

Well - the cab was in pretty bad shape inside when i got it - and I got everything working fine after a bit, until the pic/sound went out on me (that's when i decided it was time for a new PSU).

I've tested out a couple of my boards - Dragon Blaze and Change Air Blade. DB is barely audible, and comes out with no bass line, very low and is surrounded by a loud buzzing. Same with CAB, except that seems to be a bit louder with the buzzing a bit lower.

I checked all my connections, including behind the speakers, and everything looks good. Also played around with the volume controls on the PCBs - which only makes everything (including the buzzing) louder.

I really don't know what it could be - maybe this PSU isn't pumping out enough juice for the audio? Only other thing I can think of is the JAMMA harness itself is bad? Seems weird that would be the case since it was working fine with my old PSU.

Anyway - that's all I got as of now. I guess my next step would be to unclip all the wires and check for damage?

The pic I posted in the first post shows how my PSU is hooked up now - it's a River Service PSU for NACs. (http://www.rs2006.co.jp/e/powersupply/index.html)

BTW - what does the label above your ports say? Looks like the flash washed them out in the pic you posted.

It matches the labels of the other PSUs in question, left to right:

Unoccupied - DC Out 2
DC Out 1
AC 110 Out
AC 110 In

Are you using the stereo audio harness? If not, Disconnect the Audio Out from your Jamma harness (they'res a breakaway connector a few inches up on the harness) and see if the buzzing continues.

It is a stereo harness -

One thing I did notice last night while playing around with it was if I turn odwn the volume on BOTH the PSU and the PCB, I still get that buzzing...

A guy over at Arcade Otaku has an idea - but I'm a little nervous about trying it since it involves some rewiring. http://forum.arcadeotaku.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=17263

Is it possible to pop out the wires from black connectors?

Yes! I actually made a video of how to do that without buying the 250 dollar stick with a handle tool approved by Tyco Electronics to do the job.

I notice you're local (ish, Madison is about 35 minutes away). If you want me to pop down and take a look sometime late next week a friend of mine and I might be able to come down.

Sweet! I was about to buy one of those extractor tools - perfect timing :D

I might take you up on your offer - If I don't get this thing fixed, I'm going to lose my mind soon!

The guy who wired this thing was really sloppy - finding all sorts of clipped grounds, stripped wires, etc. I'm going to attempt feeding the sound amp like the guy on arcade otaku suggested, and if that doesn't work, I think I'm gutting it and starting from scratch.

What do you think of that guys suggestion? Sort of makes sense since thats what was happening on my NVS.

When would you be able to swing by? probably makes more sense to pick up this PSU (if you still want it) then to pay for the shipping (it's a heavy piece).

I might be able to Friday (26th) or Sat (3rd of Sept)

In the meantime, take as many pictures of things as you can for me, might help me find the issue.

Small update - I tried what they suggested over at arcadeotaku (pic is below) and still have exactly the same sound issue, except now the power button on the PSU wont switch the power off.

So weird.

Anyway - I'll snap some pics when i get home from work and post them here. If you can swing by on the 26th, that would be awesome. I'll PM you my address tonight.

Thanks man (BTW - paperclip trick worked like a charm!)
