So I did a very, very lengthy interview (10 pages!) with Cave earlier in the year, which has recently been published in superb French gaming publication IG.

I can't post the exact contents here (a slightly different in format English language version will be appearing on an undisclosed media outlet), but there's some mighty tasty behind-the-scenes stuff in here for any Francophones on this forum. Thanks to Mr. Rodgers and IKD for making this happen! (Suffice to say, I've got exceptionally good contacts at Cave who give me reliable information, despite what anybody not in the industry might claim.)

The magazine is available in French speaking territories (that means you Quebecois should be able to pick it up), so why not look it over and give me some feedback? Your take on my material, good or bad, is very welcome. Who knows, I may be able to go back for another round in the near future, so it could be very useful. ;)

Haha, I can't annoy my European overlords by handing out freebies, I'm afraid :X Landing this interview was a big career goal of mine, and I'm sure the people here want to read this sort of stuff, so I'll jerk it like a big ol' futanari if it means people check it out.

Really, though, I just want feedback. I love doing this sort of stuff, but ultimately it is you, the readers, who evaluate the work and help me figure out what to do in the future.

I gave up translating interviews with Cave a few years ago for a very simple reason.

1: They all basically have the same information
*or*
2: They're about whatever they're working on.

The newer ones are far less interesting than the older, most likely catering to a new breed of gamer and/or b/c they're in publications catering to non-arcade readers.

At one time I was toying w/ the idea of pursuing an interview, but not w/ IKD for the simple fact that I don't think I can ask him anything of interest that hasn't been asked before. If you in fact pulled that off, I applaud you. Some of the old, obscure interviews are awesome, but there's only so many ways someone can illustrate their past, and there's only so much these guys can say about the business as they work for a company.

I guess one day I still may try it if I ever get a free moment, but at this point I'd rather hear more about the transition from Toaplan to Cave... what really went on at the end of Toaplan (I think it was way fucking dodgy but nobody has come out and said it officially), hardships of starting up back then (Toaplan started in a mansion in Yoyogi w/ 3 people if memory serves), and their personal opinions of the old days/decay of the arcade. Cave is corporate now... everyone knows that, and the interviews (usually) show it. But I'm more interested in the individuals from their scrappier days, and would probably try to throw a few curve balls instead of the usual soft balls. You can go to college and develop a 360 game after a few years, but not many people wrote assembly language for PCBs before cell phones existed.

One-liner jabs out of nowhere, for no apparent reason, like this one are really unnecessary (and sadly becoming commonplace in this forum. If that eye roll emoticon was a human being, I would give it a swift kick in the genitals.). Especially during this circumstance, where Devil REI is simply throwing his interview out there for people who might be interested. However, I do agree with Gaijin Punch about the ridiculous size of the scan.

To GaijinPunch: I've heard that this interview is actually more interesting than what we've had lately (not that this would be a hard feat), though of course it's fairly typical Cave fare with very little actual information. Tthe closest thing to that is a confirmation that IKD pretty much doesn't care about the foreign market, but that's not really a surprise is it... I've yet to find a copy of the magazine around here though :|

He probably doesn't care about the ports either...

But did DevilREI ask the only question that matters, does he continue to develop 2d shmups for the arcade? And if so, is his answer honest or business talk?

I've always gotten the impression the guy is all about the local arcade market... very hands on... not really interested in the managing. But, that's what I've inferred from reading interviews, so that's a guess.

I got a chance to talk to someone at the last matsuri event earlier this year. they told me some shocking things which I honestly wouldn't have expected someone to just drop when being asked questions off the cuff - Originalz can verify this since he was standing next to me. But I didn't want to post what this person said here as a) it might have gotten him in trouble b) If I did repeat what he said, it would have been anonymous, and that would have been the same as posting a rumor. Nothing about new game releases, or the direction of the company - just the way things work on the inside.

Oh Rancor you tease! I agree with GP, only some of the old interviews had anything interesting, now people just ask the same old, "any chance of PS3 games in the future?" nonsense. We are all curious about future arcade releases, and if there is going to be any, but I wouldn't expect them to divulge in a interview.
