Since I'm out of work and happened to stumble upon me being mentioned with DFK:

Honestly C-Strong is super easy for survival, I hit Tsuujou after watching a video showing where all the bees are on my very first try afterwards, and I beat Hibachi in a month of first playing the game back in October 2009 on PCB(duh no port lol). I'm sure that several others here would be able to do the same if they played and learned on the port for a month. Scoring well with that ship is an entirely different matter though.

Anything other than C-Strong is legitimately much harder, but I've beaten Ura with C-Strong then A-Strong sometime around April of 2010. Reached Ura with C-Power but good god I knew to just not even try so I purposely declined and settled with a reasonable 1-ALL score seen in the high score topic. That being said I don't really play C-Strong anymore because power ships really do make the game way more fun. A-Strong is the one strong ship I have fun with still because it doesn't feel stupid cheap.

ANYWAYS, back to STGT, this game really is growing on me every passing second. How those people hit 5 Mil scores is beyond me though.

You can't rewind or jump ahead with an .inp file, so I put the top MARP run on Youtube for anyone who's interested: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHeKHHrV7dA

Some ridiculously high-level boss milking tactics near the end. :D

I know, but Vsync doesn't really help on this screen :| (To be fair it is a pretty awful screen for gaming)

Thanks for the video Saucykobold, and good luck to you guys who are going for scores over 2.5m :P

I'm no expert but sometimes I've altered the refresh rate of Windows as opposed to the optimum refresh rate of the monitor and it's caused tearing and stuff at times. Maybe check that out on your monitor as well - if it has an internal menu and been made in the last 5 years I think it should have some kind of text display somewhere showing its native res and refresh rate.

Just a thought, anyway. Good luck to all you hardcore guys playing hardcore humping shmups.

This is a horrible game. I find it far too twitchy using my ASCII pad and everything is so big (including the hit box) and therefore too fast.

It's like Vasara without a close-range attack. This is a problem, since you're probably going to be getting close to enemies. A lot.

Oh well, at least the dodging is fun.

The graphics and music in this are abysmal. I can get a little enjoyment out of the basic gameplay, but the humping and hitbox make it hard to love. I really enjoyed weeks 1-3, I guess there was bound to be something at some point that rubbed me the wrong way.

Hopefully my team can make do without a decent score from me on this.

I like this game but I don't understand how to get better at it at all. I don't feel like I've improved even the slightest bit over the course of the week.

Ditto.

I haven't been able to do any better this week, but at the same time I really don't feel the motivation to keep playing this week because this game got old really fast after like 4 or 5 credits to me. I hope that week 5 ends the STGT lineup with a bang cause I haven't been particularly excited minus the 1st day of p-47 throughout weeks 3 and 4.

Anybody play it on a vertical setup? Even Progear and those funky doujins (Yalkina STG, Airrade, Angel Destroyer) didn't put me under a "vertical knocked down" impression as strong as this one.

How many shooters did NMK develop?
These below are the ones I googled, I count them to 17, anyone played most of these and can rank them?
I thought Rapid hero was good and Thunder Dragon 2 decent, Macross quite bad.
Im not sure they were actually developers for all these (Task force harrier?).

Argus - 1986 http://www.arcade-history.com/?n=argus& ... ail&id=103
Valtric - 1986 http://www.gamesdbase.com/game/arcade/valtric.aspx
P-47 Freedom Fighter - 1988 http://www.arcade-history.com/?n=p-47-t ... il&id=1907
Saint Dragon - 1989 http://www.arcade-history.com/?n=saint- ... il&id=2296
Task Force Harrier - 1989 http://www.arcade-history.com/?n=task-f ... il&id=2838
US AAF Mustang - 1990 http://www.arcade-history.com/?n=us-aaf ... il&id=3035
Black Heart - 1991 http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/blackh ... kheart.htm
Thunder Dragon - 1991 http://www.arcade-history.com/?n=thunde ... il&id=2891
Hacha Mecha Fighter - 1991 http://www.arcade-history.com/?n=hacha- ... il&id=1064
Super Spacefortress Macross - 1992 (NMK?) http://www.arcade-history.com/?n=super- ... il&id=2757
Gunnail - 1993 http://www.arcade-history.com/?n=gunnai ... il&id=1053
Thunder Dragon 2 - 1993 http://arcade.svatopluk.com/nmk/thunder_dragon_2/
Super Spacefortress Macross II - 1993 (NMK?) http://www.arcade-history.com/?n=super- ... il&id=2758
Rapid Hero - 1994 http://www.arcade-history.com/?n=rapid- ... il&id=2177
Zed Blade - 1994 http://www.arcade-history.com/?n=zed-bl ... il&id=3240
P47-Aces, 1995 http://www.arcade-history.com/?n=p-47-a ... il&id=1909
Desert war - 1995 http://www.arcade-history.com/?n=desert ... ail&id=627
Developed by Nihon Maicom Kaihatsu (NMK). Desert War is their last video game development. They went into bankruptcy in August 1999.

Hacha Mecha Fighter, Argus, Valtric, P-47, and I think they did the original Super Spacefortress Macross and Taskforce Harrier too.

Thanks, added them to the list. I didn't think they had developed so many shooters.

NMK is awesome, but I'm afraid I'm their only fan. And while we're at it: I'm also officially the last Jaleco fan on this planet.

P-47 Aces, Hacha Mecha Fighter and both Thunder Dragons are imo very good games.
I remember that we had to play Thunder Dragon 2 during STGT '09 and Thunder Dragon during the small PHFSTGT and I enjoyed them both as much as I do P-47 Aces now. :)

Yeah, we should do some similar, small, informal NMKSTGT sometime, 5 nmk games, 2-3 days each, or something. Would be quite fun, and a nice opportunity to become more familiar with this company that seldom gets much attention here.

I don|t know the english name, but this game was also developed bz NMK: http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm7553608
We were able to play this awesome game at the last german shmeet.

Another game for the list is Operation Ragnarok: http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm6887661 (Neogeo only?)

And yeah, let's do the NMKSTGT. 2 people will participate, it'll be an intense head-to-head battle!

operation ragnarok=zed blade

You couldn't handle a head-to-head! Seriously, I think nmkstgt could attract ca 10 people at least... But I may start a thread about it later on fall/winter long after the real STGT.
Edit: the only thing, besides the lack of participants, that speaks against it, is the poor sound emulation of many of these games.

Yeah, Hacha Mecha Fighter is unplayable in MAME. I'm gonna try to record a clip of the demo sequence from my PCB and send it to the MAME devs to look at. Also might record a typical run, I still haven't beaten the score I got in Germany though.

Wangan Sensou, aka Desert War. I saw this just recently at the arcade and was impressed by the attract but not as much by the gameplay. Pretty solid, just not what I want in a shooter.

Yeah, not really fun from a shooter perspective, but you gotta love it when people are on fire running to your chopper, and you are mashing the button which yells at them to run faster!

So I can't remember, did we play Gunnail in a past STGT? The scoring system in that game will separate the men from the boys.

Not yet, but it'd be funny to see. The original Macross is nice too.

Some tidbits: Manabu Namiki is credited for lots of their later stuff. Some claim he did the original Macross, though that was probably whoever did Black Heart et al. Namiki also supposedly did graphics for Rezon.
