STGT '11 Week 4 - P-47 Aces discussion

Post by Aquas »

P-47 Aces is a game I personally spent time figuring out. Lucky for me, I just need to brush up a bit. I really like it!

At its heart it is uniquely manic for a horizontal shooter with fast bullet speeds. Because of this it is surely difficult! Specific bomb placement and boss pattern and enemy formation position recognition is key.
There are no end-clear bonuses and points are earned from enemy destruction, invisible point bonuses and ramming your ship into the environment. Note: enemies cannot destroy you by ramming into you, which is something I do rather like about this feature.

Most of you shouldn't care about the benefit of ramming your ship into stuff over survival play! There are certain spots where you can get your ship stuck into the environment which racks up the points faster. You'll see me do it occasionally in my replay but no where where it brings me into risk.

Black Widow is the best ship as her lock-on shot is particularly effective and her missiles dish out damage as well.

I am posting my replay because I want everyone to try out this game and not feel discouraged in any way! However... personally I rather enjoyed figuring out how to beat the stages and bosses without the aid of a replay. I encourage anyone looking to have that kind of fun with their STGs to do so without.

About emulation: music is emulated slowly but emulated slightly better in later versions of MAME. I kind of grew to like the slow versions myself.

I hope everyone can appreciate this gem by NMK / Jaleco! It plays rather nicely and the stages have a special groove and flow to them :) which is a real adrenaline surge!

-Fun fact about stage 4 Boss, time it out and watch the sun set.

Not gonna lie, I thought we were gonna get something like Batsugun, EspGaluda, Donpachi, etc, something more known for week 4 after seeing week 3. I got close to an all already and ShadowWraith got an ALL within 3 hours of this week starting.

Needless to say, this isn't like any other shmup I've played, and learning new things I hadn't known before will make this game rather entertaining and lulzy. I think this is gonna be a good week.

I'm right with you, some Batsugun, or anything by Cave, Raizing, Psikyo, Seibu etc would have been a great changeup from the last 3 weeks.

1944 isn't a particularly Raizing game though, with Daioh being closer to the Raizing spirit really... I must say I was hoping for a change of pace too, but given how badly received Doujin week was last time, I imagine it can't be too easy for the benevolent dictators to come up with much that's different (outside of the usual culprits like anything Cave or Bakraid, and we know how those two would turn too).

This seems a bit like Progear, but actually fun. The ridiculously horrible music and the fact you can bounce off the ground made me laugh more than I have done in ages. I can't work out if the whole this is a massive piss-take or not.

wow, you've got to be ocd about dodging bullets to enjoy this.

the game doesn't present me with anything that could give me the slightest motivation to play it.

I really can't comprehend anyone saying this game is easy...is there just something I'm not getting here? Am I approaching it incorrectly?

Either way it's a lot more fun than 1944, even though I'm doing terribly I'm actually motivated to keep trying.

I can't practice this unless I can work with savestates. Does any build of MAME feature savestate support for this?

And keep in mind, guys, this game isn't easy to all - it's just easy from RDP, who as we all know has 2-ALLed Ura DDPDFK.

Humping based scoring system. Really?

Really?

The first loop may be easy, but a 2-all on either 2nd loop is impressive.imo.

I also find .this game pretty damn easy, stage 4 is where it starts for me.

Autobombs and C-Strong hooray.
Mostly joking around really, sorry about that.

More on topic, I have no idea how you could possibly get 5 millions out of this game. Even the bosses seem to time out pretty quickly so there does not seem to be that much to be had by hump-milking them.

Lets see your Ura 2-ALL, even using the overpowered C-Strong 8)

The humping is the best part of this game. Great way to kill turrets underneath you too.

Well damn! Grats. You found it to be easy, huh?

Perhaps I just suck at that game, loop 2 gets me.

Don't you wish you, too, could hump Hibachi :P (And yes, the second loop is fairly brutal if you aren't a good player like RDP or Erppo... otherwise autobombing will only get you to 2-5 and leave you to agonize bleeding there. Or try the Power 2-ALL, nobody would dare call that easy!)

Screen tear is pretty bad for this game apparently, and I'm also confused as to how you can hit 5m... but I'm sure someone will enlighten us soon enough with an amazing score :)

So P-47 Aces is NMK developed and Jaleco distributed/published, right?

Is it right that P-47 The Phantom Fighter (P-47 The Freedom Fighter in Japan) is also NMK and Jaleco?

I'd love to know of a good site for information on NMK (I'd bet Dave K has something!). There's lot of conflicting stuff out there; especially about the P-47 games.

What's P-47 Thunderbolt, for example? I know that's the name of the real plane, but it's sometimes what the 1989 game is listed as.

And then there's the P47 console games, which I guess are straight ports of the 1989 arcade release. And there's the iOS release.

EDIT: Also, to all those dissapointed we haven't got something more 'common' like a Cave, Raizing, Seibu or Toaplan release, I'd say enjoy the chance to be pushed into playing something less obvious. That's why I love STGT; it makes me play all kinds of stuff I'd never likely touch otherwise!

Well like I said I was partially joking, but I would still call it a pretty easy 2-loop clear. Of course it starts out hard but the autobombs let you make so ridiculously many mistakes, it becomes very manageable after you learn the safe ways to deal with the second loop stuff. In any case, getting a respectable score from even the first loop is way harder.

Yeah, the autobombs really do make it almost impossible to NOT get far in the game, but stage 5 seems to eat my bombs. Thanks for the replay Errpo, once STGT is done I may for for the loop again.

Sorry for the massive off topic

Not a bad choice. It's like a colorful Fire Mustang with Zed Blade mechanics. I think some people can have fun with the scoring in this.

there's a v-sync option in the version of mame i'm using anyway, not that i've tried it, might be worth a go though.
