My Home made Tate Arcade...

Post by J3SteR82 »

Ok so its still got along way to go. Need to wire everything up and install hardware. But i figured i would post up a pic of it so far. Still got 2 more buttons on order so in the pic there missing. Before I go on, No i don't have any plans for this if someone wanted to try and make one for themselves sorry. All the plans for it are in my head lol, i build and figure out and measure as i go. It will have a mame pc and Hook ups for a xbox 360. I thought i seen in the candy cabs thread on here some custom home made viewlix cabs. But then i looked again and didn't see them so either it was another forum or website lol. So figured i would make my own thread.

Pic was taken on my phone so sorry about the quality. Has a 32" lcd and will have a SLG 3000 inside :) Still waiting for that to get here....

I called it V -Cade , which is short for Vertical Arcade.

Many 32" LCDs don't play well with the SLG because the tend to have bad upscaling - especially ones with HD-Ready resolution only. Which 32" LCD have you used ?

Its a cheap lcd so im guessing the upscalier is crap. I got it for a great price ($250 shipped at the time) and it has a great picture. Is there anything i can put in between the slg and the TV like a upscalier of some sort? Thanks Here is a link to the exact lcd in there... http://www.amazon.com/Sceptre-X322BV-HD ... B004XVMAV4

no, it would probably be cheaper to just get another (Full HD) LCD. Give it a try if you like. Not all HD-Ready LCDs are bad at scaling (most though) and let us know how it looks once you get the SLG3000.

What's so bad about the built-in scanlines of mame itself?

a) They can't be used with anything outside of MAME
b) The process eats processing power

I'm also making my own. I wouldn't mind knowing what speakers and sound system setup you have and more detail on how it was wired. Your setup looks built for Varth.

Ok DJ heres what I have used for audio...

Amp

http://www.amazon.com/PCA2-40-Watt-Ster ... =pd_cp_e_1

Top Speakers for Mids and some lows...

http://www.amazon.com/Peerless-India-W5 ... 735&sr=1-1

Lower speakers

http://www.amazon.com/KICKER-COAXIL-SPE ... 762&sr=1-1

And i would recommend to use a ground loop isolator to get rid of any hums and to protect everything. One like this

Wow, that looks nice!

Is having a widescreen TV a good idea though? I know MAME allows for aspect ratio options to maintain aspect with black bars on top/bottom but some other games might just stretch across the lot.

Unless you plan on doing something silly like Akai Katana TATEd? :P

Would you even be able to get a 4:3 lcd screen in this day and age?

Well since im not going to be using the slg 3000 i picked up, now i can hook it up using my hdmi cable. Through the catalyst control center i should be able to set my aspect ratio and or change the screen size to my needs so it wont be a problem. But you can only do that with a digital signal and since im using hdmi now it wont be a problem.. When i used the slg 3000 with my vga cable i could not change the screen through ccc , i was forced to rely on emulators that had the option to do so.

That kinda sucks, but at least now with the HDMI cable quality should be guaranteed, not that it's a huge deal with arcade games.

Anyhow, good luck with this new machine, and do post some photos when you get games up and going there! ;)

Thanks J3SteR82 for the knowledge.

I only have a single overhead ceiling spot cutout, so my battle plan is this single stereo speaker
http://www.amazon.com/Polk-Audio-Ceilin ... g=rnwff-20
with this amp
http://www.buy.com/prod/audiosource-amp ... 18944.html
But I dunno if this is the right track with wiring my own business. I know I'm supposed to match ohms..but that's about it.

I'm sure a signal splitter and subwoofer I have lying around will get involved somehow and turn this into poor choices. Baby steps.

I didn't know what to think at first, but now I think it turned out pretty good. It's probably awesome to play.

The only thing I'm not really liking is the wood grain on the screen bezel.

He has enforced a aspect ratio hence the blackbars strangely enough blend in very well with the cab

Awhile back I compaired the aspect ratio screen to that of a 27" crt and the LCD screen area was just about the same size. If not a hair bigger if I remember. So figure this is the equivalent between a 27" and 29" crt...

Most emulators have a scalelines option built in. They look just as good as the slg 3000 when set up right. Down side is some emulators don't have a option. But yes IMO they look good.
