Oh dear, some of those comments are tragic. My favourite is "Fortunately there are some people that actually care for games and try to keep them in the best condition possible (sealed)." There just isn't a facepalm jpeg big enough for that guy.

The only thing tragic is that guy's hessian hair.

Steven J. Sansweet, the hugest Star Wars collector who was even hired by Lucasfilm to be their PR guy and do shows at conventions and such, has always said something like "If you aren't intending to sell the action figure someday, then go ahead and open it up and play with it, put it on your shelf, or just enjoy it any way you want to."

Reminds me of the guy who came around trying to pimp his website about sealed games. Or something.

It's pretty damn creepy. Like a guy who stares at his girlfriend, drooling, but never touches her.

It's a thin line. One minute you're feeling proud of your collection of sealed games, the next you're writing slash-fiction stories about celebrities wrapped in clingfilm. Er, so I've heard.

Is making such videos any more puzzling than taking thousands of garbage photos with digital cameras and dumping them on the internet, or compulsive thread starting for that matter?

Some guys will watch samtron unbox anything because some lonely guys will watch samtron do ANYTHING. Eat a Twinkie, watch paint dry, etc . .

I quit watching samtron after a while because I realized she was boring and I didn't care.

I like the videos where a guy demonstrates some rare thing he got like a 64DD drive. Now that's boss.

I really don't see the point of watching someone open a box for a regular edition game that just comes with a manual and the game. I would watch a unboxing of a special edition game that comes with extra stuff just to see what the things look like.
I also watch unboxing videos for electronics to see what it comes with. Not that hard to understand why people watch them

Its because if 4000 copies of a SE come out, only 1000 people actually open them. The other 3000 wait in awe of what they bought for the first youtube, keep it sealed for eternity and watch ebay prices go up and down.
With 3000 in existence, they'll end up being old junk in a box 8)

Sealed game collecting is silly. It makes me feel guilty when I buy new games and have to open them. Now I just buy used games all the time and avoid the moral crisis =P.

My sarcasm detector is broken. For the obscure game machine fans, 64DD is quite played out. I would need to see something like a Taito WoWoW to get excited... or this:

I freaking hate Linkin Park. Despite being in their mid-30s, my sister and brother-in-law love that band, or at least they used to. He used to pal around with them (I think one or two of them grew up and attended high school in the Phoenix Area) and they were talking him up to do this big video production of theirs, doing concert footage, interviews, etc. It was supposed to be a commercially released DVD or something. They dumped him, after my sister bought him thousands of dollars of recording equipment. I think their favorite band sucks, but I'm probably wrong. After all, thousands of angry 14 year old kids can't be wrong!

Anyhow, this has nothing to do with the topic. I just wanted to voice agreement with how much Linkin Park is crap.

As for unboxing videos, hell if I know. 'Bout as entertaining as trying to shave with a spoon.

Sealed game collecting, however, is something that I think I understand, but definitely don't partake in. Collecting sealed games in the end has nothing to do with the actual video games, and everything to do with the collecting. It's about the feeling of owning rare items. I would wager people who collect video games don't actually spend much time playing video games at all, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. I've seen people with stamp collections who rarely use the postal service and people with Pez dispenser collections who don't eat Pez. It's all a bit silly to me, but I think I understand it, and if that's what makes them happy, then it's all good. I think some people that frequent the trading board here sort of fit into this category with PCBs...

I hate Linkin Park's songs, esp. the whiny, loud vocals. The music isn't too bad... and the lead singer says he digs Depeche Mode 8)

Guys, if it was a game he was really looking forward to, it's like opening a christmas present.

Catherine is coming out this week, and I won't be able to play it. Didn't buy into this generation, but I'll be damned if Atlus and Cave don't tempt me. Living vicariously through the entire experience of Catherine (or Ghostbusters: The Video Game) is all I have.

... if I didn't live in a shack with the dial ups. I have basically nothing. Not even let's plays in ASCii-form diagrams.

But stamps and Pez don't quite do what video games do. You could use one stamp, eat one pex, and know for the rest of your life what most of the other ones are about. The same does not go for video games.

And I'm prety sure most of the people that collect PCB's actually play them.

I get it, having rare stuff is cool. But, so many games are still rare even when not sealed, and playing that rare game makes owning it so much cooler.

Yeah, unless the person owns two of the same video game, then it doesn't make sense to have it sealed. Collecting for its sake doesn't sound like fun at all. It sounds more like a sign of mental illness; like those hoarders you see on teevee.

If it's on unboxingporn, I will give it a look. Some of the videos of fat guys opening a generic game in their depressing room are, well, depressing.
