I can't tolerate the original 1942. Oh god, the sound. Even with it off, I can't enjoy playing it at all. I just don't like it.
And then there's Ikaruga, but who really enjoys playing that? :<
There was another, I can't remember what it it's called, but it contained alot, and I mean alot of walls. Small ship, lots of 1 cm lazer bullets, and a tiny ship. I think the ship was yellow. I hated that game to death on the NES when I was a kid. Actually, I think I cried from dying so much.
I shouldn't take gaming so seriously.

1942 I can agree on. I can't play that at all...The other ones I can do fine, but 42 just doesn't do anything for me.
I'm not very good at some of Toaplan's older shmups, either. I SUCK at the Shark games, for example.

YOU ARE APPROACHING THE TARGET OF ATTACK! THE MISSION STARTS NOW! ARE YOU READY?!
I tried Gradius Gaiden and 1 lifed to stage 4, then proceeded to waste every one of my 9 credits worth of lives trying to get past the 2nd to last checkpoint. One time I even made it past that whole part and ran into one of the goddamn powerup ships, and it sent me all the way back to the same checkpoint.
Then one time I got past it and couldn't beat the double moai head boss with the 2 lives or so I had left.
Fuck that game, seriously.

Right now I refuse to play Dragon Blaze because of its punishing difficulty. I vow to return to it only after I have become proficient with Gunbird 2 and Strikers 1945 II, maybe in a month or two. I can get to 1-4 in the latter two games, but I cannot get anywhere in DB. Perhaps disciplining myself on these earlier Psikyo games will prepare me for DB.

And you call yourself a shmupper? Most decent players can complete it in less than a month, and worse players like me triumph with some perseverance.Dandy J wrote:I tried Gradius Gaiden and 1 lifed to stage 4, then proceeded to waste every one of my 9 credits worth of lives trying to get past the 2nd to last checkpoint. Edit: I don't like games in which you have to die to progress like for example *CoughGareggaCough.*

Some people have a hard time with certain games; it just doesn't mesh with their play style I guess. I hear people complain about Dragon Blaze, but it's not so hard with practice for me; just lots of memorizing so you kill guys as they come into view before they shoot.UnscathedFlyingObject wrote:And you call yourself a shmupper? Back on topic I paid about ten bucks a piece for Rock On, Barunba and a bunch of other similar shmups for the PCE. Can't say I see myself playing them again anytime soon. I also hate Aero Blasters for some reason.

probably about 80% of early horis. i've tried so many times to get into this type of gameplay, but i hate credit feeding and progressing 1 cm further in a stage each time i play because, guess what, i couldn't see into the future and predict that 50 ships would immediately shoot me in the ass with no warning...
hehe
exaggerating btw. i will conquer r-type one day.
in fact that's a complete lie. i say now that i refuse to play them but i can't help myself sometimes and the pull of constant death brings me to punish myself with arrow flash and such.
stupidly i find this type of game infinately more difficult than any challenging vert.
hope this doesn't turn into a flame war as it's a pretty interesting topic

Unsinn! The reason threads like this get out of control is because people say such thoughtless things. Terrible graphics? Try Dragon Blaze or Gunbird 2 in tate. Bad gameplay? The proximity attack is brilliant. The weapon system in Strikers II is a blast. The coin chaining is a great challenge. Terrible design? These games are non-stop, intense action: you always have to be thinking about what is just around the corner. I see no merit in these criticisms.zinger wrote:Basically ALL Psikyo games. Actually, that's why threads get out of control. If people were able to state their opinion without others telling them they are wrong, there would more than likely be far fewer flamewars.professor ganson wrote:Unsinn! Then again.... *shrug*
Well, I don't really like Psykio games either, but yeah he's being pretty harsh lol. I personally don't like
1. The bullet patterns. Sometimes they aren't even patterns, it just seems like they throw a lot of fast crap at you. The gameplay in terms of dodging does not have the same flow as Cave games.
2. The random level orders. This is the one thing that keeps me from really liking ESPRade, and I think it's kind of silly. I'm glad it doesn't happen much in shmups nowadays.
3. Coin chaining is a really dumb scoring system. I don't care how you slice it, it just completely seperates itself from the game. If I have one pet peeve, it's scoring systems that feel like they have no impact on the actual game.
All in all Psykio games are still pretty cool, but I don't enjoy playing them either.

You make some good points. I don't like random level orders in general (Icepick and I were just discussing this two days ago on a Shiki thread), and sometimes the bullet patterns seem really uninspired. With respect to coin chaining, I do prefer a scoring system more integral to fighting enemies, like in Zanac Neo. But in the case of Gunbird 2 they put a lot of thought into the placement of coins, it seems to me, and I enjoy the challenge of keeping a chain going.Dandy J wrote:Well, I don't really like Psykio games either, but yeah he's being pretty harsh lol. Which is even worse, IMO, because then you're faced with a concious decision to pick character based on knowing you won't get a certain stage as your 3rd, or picking one to get an optimal score. For example I don't wanna play the Mall as my 3rd stage, but my fav character is Irori. So everytime I play I have to give myself a 50/50 chance of getting the Mall 3rd.
edit: that is unless your 2nd/3rd stage order is determined by something? I am under the impression that your character selection only determines which stage you get first.
