Re: New Heavy Metal Scrolling Shooter
Of course this game is no Crimzon Clover, but it's not supposed to be. It's not a game one would play for challenge or score. It's a playable music video, does perfect job as such, and doesn't try to do anything else.

TBH I kind of agree, but if they were to change things ild rather it go in the direction that ive just pointed outmice wrote:Lots of scary comments here.
This is an experience more than a game.
The color scheme is superb. Don't change a thing.

This is the sloppiest reasoning I've heard in awhile. So any game that has music from a band is now a "Music video experience" or some nonsense? Give me a break. "Vaguely interactive experience" doesn't sound too exciting either :Pmice wrote:This is an experience more than a game.

@udder: I'm not even going to try to analyze it. And I don't have to, since I enjoyed the experience.

Re: New Heavy Metal Scrolling Shooter
Take the metal down to 0 and bring up the gameplay to 10.
But I appreciate you sharing it, though.

i agree with mice
as someone who spent a lot of his youth re-syncing his favorite music to particularly epic moments in videogames ... i'm surprised its taken someone this long to do this.
on top of that, for what it is, it's executed REALLY well.
anyone whose understanding isnt stunted by their own increasingly-exclusive definition of 'videogames', should be able to recognize and appreciate the effort put into this

Re: New Heavy Metal Scrolling Shooter
Bad performance here (requirements met easily) and it failed to recognise my USB joypad properly (took the left stick's y for vertical and the right stick's x for horizontal, or something like that), moreover, controlling the character in a platformer/shmup with WSAD doesn't feel intuitive for me, therefore I'm not judging the gameplay. I have some stuff to say about two things:
- Colour palette - don't change it. You'll never please everybody with such toned down solutions (I for one find RE4's early locations drab, whereas, Capcom's own Gun.Smoke does the colour thing better for me). The artistic direction is fine, but it's going to be divisive. As far as I'm concerned, this looks better than Ketsui. Maybe the captions should be more explicit or something. The graphics certainly could be more informative here and there.
- Movement control - is it eight-directional or analogue? I mean the way you move your dude around, not the obviously analogue aiming.

Quite a few people in this thread need to rethink their strategy, or they will lose the war.

I think the game is a solid (first?) effort. Really like the art design. Wouldn't detect my gamepad, but other than that nice work.

Thanks for continuing to check this out and give feedback, we appreciate both the constructive criticism and positive reinforcement.
Just so people know the only controller that we absolutely know works is an xbox 360 wired controller. Regular controllers and joysticks can even interfere with the mouse and keyboard controls sometimes. It's recommended that other controllers are unplugged before booting the game.
Snake- Tom has done some games before, but this is his first time doing something like this. His previous games were Paroxysm (more of a pince of persia type thing) and Plasma Warrior (very metroid). It's my first time doing game design and art, while Francis has done a lot of pixel work for various games.

Re: New Heavy Metal Scrolling Shooter
But this game is being written *for* the song, to sync with it. What don't you get about that being different than a game with a soundtrack? It is what it is, and if you want to treat it primarily as a game that's your prerogative, but some will want to approach it differently.Udderdude wrote:This is the sloppiest reasoning I've heard in awhile. Drivel split to its own thread, moving on with actual discussion about the game.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.
