Hopefully the low sales means the stores will end up with stocks they need to deplete and lower their prices

Apparently the company is happy. From Andriasang:Cuilan wrote:Back to sales discussion, it looks like the PS3 port didn't do very well. Media Create has it outside of the top 50 for the latest weekly ranking. They have #20 at 6,521 units sold, and they stop listing sales numbers for titles after that, so I think it's safe to assume Mamoru-kun has sold less than 5,000 copies. Of course, keep in mind that online sales and import sales aren't included, though how much those account for may forever remain a mystery. Gulti made a cryptic Twitter post that seemed to imply that they sold enough to cover the port's cost.
Personally, I'd be pretty surprised if there are more shmup ports for PS3 after this (except maybe Strike Witches).
Anyone know if they fixed the milking issues with this port? I'd like to pick this up at some point if they have.
Many others have been reporting similar issues. I think they're working on a patch.everlust wrote:EDIT: Received this today. I like it...but my PS3 continuously locks up on me while playing it =/
This has happened several times, at the very first menu most of the time, and twice in game. Even more annoying is that its a complete freeze, have to power off the PS3 by holding down the power button. Major problem if this issue is wide spread. (PAL 40GB PS3).
PlayStation 3 got a rare shooter last week through Cyber Front's Mamoru-kun is Cursed!. Developed by Gulti (who, according to their official site, is also responsible for "0 Day Attack on Earth" and "Unannounced Title" for Square Enix), Mamoru-kun is an overhead 2D shooter that made a rare trip from arcade to Xbox 360 to PlayStation 3 rather than the far more common route of Arcade to Xbox 360 to that's it.
So how did PlayStation 3 owners react to an unfamiliar genre? Apparently quite well! In a Tweet earlier in the week, Gulti CEO Osamu Chadani said that the game is seeing sell outs.

If it didn't even reach the top 50 then the only way stores will be seeing sellouts is if they only had like 2 copies in stock. Online stores aren't soldout, so who knows. He also talks about it costing less than Killzone 2 or whatever, which kind of makes me think it's a joke tweet.

I agree, it might be a sellout in store that only bought a few copies to sell.If it didn't even reach the top 50 then the only way stores will be seeing sellouts is if they only had like 2 copies in stock. So going by face value the game hasnt sold that well, maybe enough for Gulti for make a profit which concidering the game is a port from the 360 and arcade it wouldnt of cost them that much to release the game. Ild guess that it doesnt bode too well for other STG developers porting their titles to the PS3. Its a shame none of know what Rockin Androids sales figures are (although it must be profitable for them as they have released a fair few doujin games for the PS3)
I think its a shame devs stick to the 360, while I agree that keeping all our eggs in one basket is good for the devs and most shmup fans but I cant see the problem in why they cant make their games multiplatform by releasing on the 360 first and then later porting the game to the PS3 and PC. Multiplatform works for AAA game developers who need to maximise their profits to meet the huge costs. Niche devs are in a simlar position in that the profits they make isnt all that special so it would make good business sense plus its a common thing with many indie devs, its only Japanese (especially stg) devs who seem to have this crazy console exclusive mindset.

Also... yeah. I heard something like 1266 copies being sold, Famitsu reporting 2500. Not good sales at all.

Now i haven't had the system lock on me ever since. :S
Still, could happen any moment, so a patch would be good.
Also, 2500 copies sold? Wow, that's beyond horrible.

Those figures are really bad what happened to all those PS3 gamers in the mainstream gaming sites saying it sucks as this and that game isnt out on the PS3? Is it jst a case of ppl wanting what they cant have and stupid console fanboyism?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was in reference to that Amazon review. Though I wouldn't be surprised at all if they really did sell enough to cover the cost of porting it.Elixir wrote:I get the feeling that was in response to this troll Amazon.jp review:

Am loving the game, except for a few big problems.
I was just literally on the last level of Meikai Gekijou mode (the 16:9 mode), on a good run and fixing to beat the last mission when the game froze.
...
Goodbye gold trophy.
Frustrating.
Again I am really enjoying the game besides the freezing issues and clumsy UI. The missions are bite-sized and super fun, although some verge on extremely hard.

Btw, everlust, the freeze issue is being widely reported on 2ch.
Just had my 5th freeze. Tends to happen more in Arcade or Story mode, but will occasionally freeze in Meikai Gekijou mode.
I've gotten all the way through Meikai Gekijou mode so if you have a question on certain missions hit me up. Obviously the ones with higher difficulty indicated are indeed difficult, but if you memorize where the hearts are in each level you're golden.
There are 31 courses in all, split into the categories below.
お手軽 5
基礎検定 4
応用検定 4
冥界旅行 4
突破 4
呪 5
鬼 5
The 呪 and 鬼 courses are the hardest, with the third 呪 mission being far and away the most difficult IMO. These missions have you timed out and having to kill bosses with four Deaths chasing you around the screen.
I am currently on the last 鬼 mission and pretty confident I can clear it if my system just wouldn't freeze.
Incidentally another crazy thing about this release, it's been confirmed via the Trophy wiki that you can't get all the trophies for the game unless you have the DLC costumes, which only come in the LE, because you have to get their gallery pictures. This is apparently not a bug...

Yeah, surePersonally, I'd be pretty surprised if there are more shmup ports for PS3 after this (except maybe Strike Witches).
Sales from this week and past week are really low, Software sales are really low for all consoles, even 3DS doesn't sell good, I partially blame Fukushima ( and the lame 3DS Lineup )
Low sales of Mamoru, well. its only a port of an average game, 1 year later, Fukushima was an issue too, however, "Sold Out" is always good.
However, DDP Black Label, Dodonpachi DFK, MuchiMuchi, and probably Eschatos and Bullet Soul, bombed too.
Ignoring the PS3 is the wrong way, ~7 Million PS3 in Japan, ~30.000 new units sold in every week, compared to the Batsubox-360, ~1,5 Million units, and ~1.800 units per week, Xbox360 is already dead in Japan, thus the low sales of AAA games like DDP DFK on THE Shmup-console

Yeah, and again I stress: you can't buy the DLC on the PSN store. You have to have a code from the LE.Elixir wrote: Wow, that's some Idea Factory-like quality.
I do hope they eventually post the DLC so people can at least buy it.
------------------
So, if you were wondering what's different from the 360 version, here's a rundown.
- Load times improved - All load times are indeed improved by about 1/3 to 1/2 over the 360 version. I popped the 360 version in tonight and it struck me as very slow.
- Graphics improved - Graphics are improved across the board, and Meikai Gekijou Mode has some nice shading effects in place.
- Meikai Gekijou Mode - 16:9 Widescreen Mode - This has a mission-based structure, some short, some long and the hardest quite hard. Very fun, but suffers from poor UI that returns you to the Main Menu every time you complete a mission or die.
- Story Mode now has a helpful indicator in the top right to let you know if you've finished the objectives necessary for each stage (which allow you to face the final boss).
- Arcade Mode is faster than the 360 release. The TLB fight for the 360 release was bizarrely slowed down (not sure how the arcade board was), and the PS3 version rectifies this. In turn, getting 1CCs on the PS3 is more challenging, especially with the harsh third form of the TLB.
- DLC Costumes available
- Leaderboards are a major step down from the 360. There are over 30 leaderboards for Meikai Gekijou mode alone and you have to scroll and sync through them one by one. All you need is a goddamn list to make this easier for everyone but this could be PS3 TRC or something, dunno. You also can't click on a user to see who they are, no replays etc. Extremely bare bones.
Known issues with the port so far:
- Freezes reported mainly in Arcade and Story Mode and sometimes Meikai Gekijou mode when there's a lot of stuff on screen. When the game freezes, the system has to be reset.
- Gallery unlocking trophy cannot be unlocked without the DLC costumes, which are only available in the LE.

Platinumed!
I have to say I definitely think the PS3 version is the better game, I just hope they fix all the bugs with it.
If there are people on the fence about picking it up, you might wait for a price drop, but what really puts this over the 360 version for me is the Meikai Gekijou mode, which is just a really fun challenge. Since scoring in this game appears to be eternally broken due to infinitely spawning enemies in Arcade Mode, Grev made the right call and made 30 or so courses based just on clearing the game under different conditions. It's got a strong but reasonable level of difficulty which I enjoyed.
Each course also has leaderboards. There don't appear to be infinitely spawning enemies in this one so this is basically how the game was meant to be played.

*Just made an account for this thread.
About the dlc costumes and the limited edition, my standard copy came with a voucher inside the manual that reads "costume change product code." Psn is currently down, but I believe, or rather hope, that this will enable platinum.
adversity1: Thanks for all of the advice, especially the widescreen challenge mode level details. Just started taking Japanese classes, so I don't know much kanji, thus, I had no idea what the trophies under the story mode were, but I assume that they are all challenge related now.

How do I claim my DLC code for the extra costumes?
And is there ANY kind of strategy involved with this game? Or is just straight up shooting all the time.

That's what I was saying about the release of Otomedius here in the U.S., but this being Japan it might have some real impact on discouraging developers from making any more shoot-'em-ups for the PS3 completely.originalz wrote:Can't say I was expecting this of all games to possibly be released on the PS3, as a disc release at that!
This might do more harm than good, can't expect this selling very well and it'll just further discourage developers wanting to put shooting games on the system. I'd be bloody amazed if it even outsold the 360 version.
I didn't think it was a bad game. Hell, I'd pick Mamoru-kun over Strike Witches any day

Hiya denpanosekai. I have no idea about the DLC, but for strategy check out the other topic here for ideas manipulating the timer and spawn points: http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?t=15645
That one is for the arcade and 360 versions, but it should give you a good idea what to do.

Re: Mamorukun wa Nowarete shimatta coming to PS3 (retail)
Pardon the bump, but I just got the "Best" version of this the other day, and have a handful of questions in case anyone knows:
1) What's the difference between the two different menu selections for the widescreen "challenge" mode? When starting up the second one down it makes me choose a handful of basic options (much as you do when starting up Story), but otherwise they look the same, at least on the surface.
2) My copy came with a DLC voucher which I redeemed, and apparently included two things: one was the pair of extra characters (and yeah, the girl with the bats is a bit ridiculous), but I'm not sure what the other one was for (I don't think it's the costumes, unless I'm just looking in the wrong place). Apparently they added some new challenge courses at some point, are those it? If nobody knows I could scan the flyer and see if anyone's willing to translate.
3) Is the dotted orange background for the results screen in wide mode some sort of hidden Magic Eye illusion? It's seriously messing with my eyes...

Re: Mamorukun wa Nowarete shimatta coming to PS3 (retail)
As it turns out I also bought this game about a week ago, but mine was an original copy that was used. The second widescreen option is supposed to be training mode, its just thin on options. As for DLC, mine came with a DLC card but there was only one code on it and it was already used. However the extra characters were already on my disc, I didn't have to download them. I think my DLC was just for a costume.
