That's really cool. Makes me wish I hadn't given up my dream to make a shmup for my High School's senior project. It was gonna be a gradius/cave story mixture. :/
The music sound really familiar too.
My high score is 2115 so far. ;P

Let the kids know that I like the game, and that they keep on going. They maybe start the next Cave or G.rev

I'm going to need a PC to play this right? I really want to submit a score to this game's high score thread! I think it's so wicked there are young guys today learning programming and choosing to make shmups, and it's so cool they're getting a thread on this forum. We should support them!
I thought that! Keep all their spare notes that they don't want Shatterhand; you're sitting on a collectors goldmine!z0mbie90 wrote: They maybe start the next Cave or G.rev

Re: There is hope!
There's some neat graphics in Awesome Blue Guy and, despite being a simple game (and i sincerely hope that they'll keep working at it and discover the joys of Game Maker timelines because this with actual attack waves and multiple enemies...!), it's proving a complete bugger to put down. This post has taken ages because i'm trying to beat my best score at the same time! =-)

I actually advise them not to use the in-built timelines, but to code their own timelines. It gives them more freedom and also they learn more about programming (Which is the idea of the course).Game Maker timelines
They actually don't use any of the drag'n'drop stuff, they do all in GML.
And fear not, the last version I saw they working on already had more enemies and some bullet patterns. I really think something pretty good will come out from this

Re: There is hope!
That really is excellent for a first beta release Shatterhand. Your students are quite great.
By contrast my first Game Maker project in class used a mixture of Drag&Drop and GML, with most enemies only shooting directly at the player, along with massive performance issues and stupid stuff et al. I've been real quiet about this project but seeing what your students came up with gave me the idea to post this so they can see how much better their initial project is than mine, and also how persistence prevails with coding a scrolling shooter. Get it here if you're interested.
You've been teaching those kids real well which is better than what I ever had. Let them know that persistence prevails, and Game Maker is a large learning curve that already beginning to reap its rewards for them.

Awesome game! Love the art-style! This might be the best looking shmup I gott...There seems to be some slowdown when I reached 3000 points...It might just be my computer...made the game a lot easier...

LOL. Just played Awesome Blue Guy, it was hilarious. It actually felt like playing a Doujin game. :]
I think you should show them some of the Game Maker creations we have in the Development forum to give them more ideas, Like Xeno Fighters, Rozyrg's games, G.M.O.S.S.E., Last Fighter D and Nanoforce. Or have you done this already?
Edit: Added G.M.O.S.S.E. to the list, they can get quite a few ideas from it. I lol'd at their homework being a few rounds of DDP. "If you don't 1CC the second loop and beat Hibachi, you get an F!"

Re: There is hope!
hmm...played some more...the game allways begins without any slow down and then it gets slower and slower and slower...I scored 20000 and it toke like 4 seconds for my bullets to leave the screen... I think there might be a problem with enemies contiueing to exist after they leave the screen or the enemy bullets or my bullet...

Awesome! I love the game. The graphics are stylish and remind me of both Domo-Kun and Cave Story, which can only be a good thing. The music fits wonderfully. Most importantly, I really dig the gameplay. Even though it's quite simplistic, they totally nailed the pacing. The game has a very nice flow to it, which makes it greatly satisfying to mow down the enmy hordes. Also, I'm in the same boat as TMR: I find the game strangely addictive. I'd have posted my impressions an hour ago, but I found myself unable to put it down.
I'm really looking forward to the next version.

I told them about this bug, they already found the reason of it and are correcting right now.I think there might be a problem with enemies contiueing to exist after they leave the screen or the enemy bullets or my bulle
Yes, I showed them and they went nuts. Now they are like "Damn, now we *NEED* to finish this game!!!". They are really motivated by seeing people playing the game.Yeah, have you showed them the thread? Tell them they can join the forum and start there own Development thread Would be awsome!
I don't know if they will feel confident enough with their english to post here. I think I'll ask the english teacher to help them to do that.
They spend the whole afternoon today drawing ideas and levels on paper. They have a shitload of stuff planned on paper now.. I don't even know half of what they planned. And their current version has a few more stuff than the one they uploaded, but I think they now will wait to have something more "finished" before showing it to the world.
Edit: Herr, The kids just saw what you said about their game, it made them feel real happy. They went again saying "OOh, we need to finish this game!!!"

Unlike Shmups Chat the Development thread is generally nice with regards to people with not-so-perfect English so don't let them be intimidated.
I dont know how people are getting over 10000 for scoring here though, I keep getting killed past one thousand.
This might be quite demanding on them early on but I recommend a FPS display somewhere if its not there already (I can provide code from GMOSSE if necessary, its just a global variable 'fps' being drawn really), and since they're making a game with a flying person they should have a go at ESPRade for homework. It'll give them ideas apart from Dodonpachi's chaing scoring but still be a familiar face in a sense.

With me being 17 years old and stuck in Kansas where most people think "shmup" is a bad word, does this mean I'm special? lol

Are you sure they aren't confusing it with "shmuck" or anything? Otherwise, I find this hard to believe.raigon50 wrote:With me being 17 years old and stuck in Kansas where most people think "shmup" is a bad word, does this mean I'm special? lol

I don't really know. I think they may be thinking it's some sort of curse word in another language... I mentioned shmups to my English teacher once, and she gave me a detention. I had to explain it after school.

This is allot of fun! How come this is better than most of the games I've played on xna/xblig?
They're doing a great job, and I can't wait to see how this turns out in the long run! The only request I would have is that they would consider controller support, too many years of work has made playing with the arrow keys kind of painful. If it's out of the question, or would detract from the project then it is no big deal.
Keep up the good work guys! The future is in your hands now!

Re: There is hope!
It's very easy to implement joystick support on GameMaker. Problem is we don't have a joystick to test this kind of thing at school.xris wrote:This is allot of fun! How come this is better than most of the games I've played on xna/xblig?

Guess I'll either ask the school to buy a joystick or I'll just donate one of my dozens USB Pads to the school

Re: There is hope!
Just to let you guys know... the project is going very well, if a bit too slow...
I'll try to take some screens later to show you guys, but there's not a lot playable so far...
We've been thinking about moving the development to XNA at the end of the year.. it's a whole new world for the kids, but they were very excited about it. Maybe 'til there they'll have something more "finished" to show to the world.

Some of the graphics are obvious place-holders, but I guess it's possible to see where the art-direction is going to, and that they are indeed coding some bullet patterns...
