I always loved this cover.. it's so abstract. ;)

Anyway.. for those who aren't aware that the title is an actual English word:

Ah yes, the weird looking old fart on the Phalanx cover. Would have made a great alternate cover for Manos The Hands of Fate. haha

for the latest version of snesamp (spc winamp 2.9x plug-in) or the bare spc700 emulation engine. This site also has a large collection of fully tagged spcs.
This causes to me a sensation of badness. - Stormwatch

I always thought of Phalanx as one of the "big 3" SNES shmups: Axeley, Phalanx and Super Aleste.

Of the four versions of Phalanx the SNES version was probably #2 or number #3, definitally not the best, but not the worst either.

Phalanx came out on:

Sharp X68000 computer (best version)
Nintendo SNES
Nintendo GBA
cell phones in Japan

X68000 cover

now THAT is a kickass box cover which is, oh, a bit more fitting for a good shmup like Phalanx,

thanks to NFG Games

Can't say how the port fares to the original as I've never played the latter, but I do like the game as it is. It's a bit flawed, but has some good stuff in there. I thought it was cool how in one of the later stages you can freely fly around a huge battleship, enter it at specific points and take the whole thing down.

I'm a closet Phalanx-fan, I tracked down Zero Divide just for Tiny Phalanx. :D Never even tried ZD itself.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

On a non-shmup-related note, but on-topic, another WTF boxart belonged to Ironsword: Wizards & Warriors II for the NES. It had a picture of Fabio in a cheesy warrior garb.

Some redneck on the box, what the hell is that!!!

Edit: Ok, I gave the game a run on ZSNES. I remember playing this game a few years ago. I didn't found the game to be too great.

Edit 2: Space Megaforce? OK, I try out the game on ZSNES. IT JUST FUCKING SUPER ALESTE!! I HATE WHEN GAMES HAS TWO DIFFERENT NAMES!!! Well, it solves the "Why this game never get to the US" problem. When I get a SNES, I'm buying the import version of the game.

So in the X68000 Phalanx, do you play Link? I ask because apparently they've stolen the Triforce with spaceships (check out that cover...it's right there under the ship!) and I assume we'll need Link to retrieve the Triforce...

Wow, thanx for that X68000 cover art, gigadrive. It goes without saying that Jap covers will almost always be better but with Phalanx I would never have guessed that much better. That is one neat little docking bay the ship is in. :)

I remember reading someplace that the "Triforce" symbol was not "invented" by the Zelda games, but actually stands for something...I forget what, though. In any case, if what I (partially) remember is correct, then the symbol could be used in more than one place, or more than one video game.

Okay, if no one else does a fanart or Photoshop edit of this, I'll have to whip something up next time I get the chance.
Would work better with better source images, but oh well

Yeah, you can find them all over the place. There's a triforce design on my dad's table drill in the shed.

The three linked triangles was a symbol of one of Japan's shogunates. Nintendo used it for the Tri-Force because they knew it would be universally recognized in Japan.

I was playing a bit of Turok 2 the other day (don't ask), and there are triforces scattered about.

Hah, just saw this. Funnily enough, I played that game to death when it came out, and I _still_ use that phrase randomly sometimes.

decent and improved. you can actually SEE the bullets now! (bullets are yellow w/ a red border, as opposed to a flat red dot, which commonly lead to Invisible Bullet Syndrome for me...) no Pharmer Bob on the cover but it's definitely worth the $9 i paid for it. also you can continue from the last stage you played, but you can't add to your score... thus, it's better off to just play through it in one sitting, though the Continue option is good for practice, i guess. good freaking luck finding it, took me a few months til i got it at a Gamestop the same day it came in... lucky me. ^^

Don't know if anyone's mentioned this, but EGM did a feature on the cover art of Phalanx a few years back. Apparently the old man was a poster boy for Santa Claus as well :)
