Name confusion.

Post by Rob »

I've noticed an increasing number of too similar names. I think someone should chase these people down and force them into picking something more original.

Monkey Man - Mr Monkey Man

ThunderForce - Thunder Force

Brians (except for "Brian" I have a hard time telling who is who, it's just one collective)

Daves (dave4shmups standing out a bit)

You know you can change your name in the profile section, I think. You are new, after all. It's not too late.

Hmm, regarding the new user who joined recently with the name ThunderForce, I asked him to do something about it to avoid confusion, and I think he added some numbers to the end of it. That seemed OK at the time.

Searching - yes THIS is him now.

Generally unless it's a case of impersonation there's nothing wrong with similar names per-se. But if it still confuses the heck out of enough forum members though, he may be asked to change it to something else. I don't think we want to have to police names of new users too much, but we also don't want virtually identical names interfering with communication, so particularly bad cases should be pointed out to us (preferably with links to the users in question)

I've seen a user post with the nick ~Kid Icarus~ (complete with tildes) around here, but it's a vastly different name to mine, so I'm not too bothered about it :)

So, if you change your name, do you keep your post count?

I wonder what kind of things I could do with a name change... ?

Yes.

That said, changing one's own username was disabled recently, so you'd have to contact an admin for a name change.

For some reason, I don't think I have to worry about anyone having a name close to mine....

I really hope you can tell the difference between me and dave4shmups.

Given that Felix the Cat is long gone and possibly dead or something, perhaps the screen name I used on other message boards, Anti-Felix, can now be used without confusion or controversy.

I would have come up with something more original, but I don't think any other Daves were around when I first came here.

I know of my "evil twin" Bullet Dodger, and I think there are a few other "bullet" usernames floating around, but I don't think there's much confusion as to who's who among us.

It owld be a mess to implement that now. It is not impossible, just not very smart to do now.

Darn, a postcount+500-or-so would add some real karma to my persona in these parts. I guess I'll have to resort to junk posting.

Man, tell me about it. Not that it matters, but I was close to 3,000 on the old board. It's like losing all your merit badges or something.

The only problem I have with similar screennames is if it's two people who don't use avatars, or someone suddenly changes their's. It's hard to adjust when an avatar changes, it's so much worse when you have to figure out which person it is because of near identical screennames.

I'm glad I settled on Señor Tusken Raider. I have no intentions of changing it anytime soon.

I don't get what the big fuss is about post count. Mine could go back to zero for all I care.

I've thought about changing my name to avoid all the confusion as well...with "TwitchDoctor" being so common and typical and all.
If it weren't for my post count(merit badges) being lost, I would change my name to something more unique and original like "Eric Cartman".

Yeah, I know my username isn't very original, but whatever cool name I decided to use always gets stolen and used by people on other boards. So now I'm just generic Dave_K. and its still unique on all the boards I frequent, and not cool enough to steal.

^^^ I think the Robb/RobbCorpse phenomenon is Pa's work. Good one, Pa.

I miss your avatar, Rob. It's one of the only avatars that hadn't changed in my year here. At least the new one is funny.

PaCrappa is a busy man with no time for fake accounts. I just thought it was weird that the old name is deleted. Maybe the poor new person saw this harrassing thread and asked for it to be deleted/changed.

Yeah, I will drop this avatar when I stop finding it funny (1-2 more days tops) and since I can't find a larger image. I'll probably throw Quaid back in a few days if I don't feel like something else. It's a shame I had to break the streak, though.
