Do I HAVE to go to the Apple Store? (iPod Touch repair)

Post by szycag »

Only after a few weeks of owning an iPod Touch, the headphone jack isn't working correctly. I've tried with two different pairs of headphones and my car adapter, and it's not putting out the full spectrum of the sound. I hear crackly hihats and almost no bass on a few techno songs, only the reverbed backing track of the vocals or no vocals at all on some rock songs. Googling it, I see that this is sort of a common problem. The first day I got it, I noticed that the headphones don't quite "click" into the jack like they do on other devices. As much as I hate to go, does anyone know how fair the Apple store's charge would be for this kind of repair? I can call for an exact price when I get around to it, I'm just wondering what other experiences you guys might have had with Apple repairs. Like I said I've only had it for a month so I don't really know if it's under any kind of warranty.

I don't think the iPod Touch was ever a fit for me in the first place. I hate using iTunes, and the Cave games are OK but I can most certainly live without them. The simplest shmups work best on it, like rRootage, but I can play that on my PC just fine. I think my Cave fandom led me astray on this one. I just want my Sansa Fuze back. That thing was absolutely perfect until it went through the wash.

It should still be covered under the 1 year warranty.

Go here: https://selfsolve.apple.com/GetWarranty.do

They'll send you a pre-addressed box, which you put the ipod in and send to them. It usually takes a couple weeks and they'll send it back to you.

I found with the iPad, the jack is supposed to go mostly in and doesn't work right when it's all the way in.

Was even easier than that, they just had me take it to the UPS store, didn't cost anything. Not too bad, hope it comes back quickly. I guess I need to be more careful with the headphone jack this time around, it's just a really horrible fit.

As pretentious as Apple fans/employees can be, getting something fixed there is a piece of cake. It should be for the premium cost. My 4 year old Macbook Pro succumbed to a known issue and they fixed it (with a rush) for free, no questions asked. I had even opened and tinkered with it.

Whoa, people still use iPods to listen to music? That's like watching MTV to watch rock videos!

They refused to repair it. Accidental damage or misuse. They're sending it back to me within 2 days. Never touching an Apple product again, certainly... What good reason could they have? How much could it possibly cost to replace a fucking headphone jack?! They haven't given an exact reason yet... I did attempt a jailbreak at some point but it didn't go through, it was a newer version of the iOS than it supported. I suppose it could have left a trail. That's the only thing I can think of. At this point I just want to get it repaired as cheap as possible and sell it. I'd sell ALL my possessions just to get the chance to take a piss in Steve Jobs' cereal. Or soup, I guess that works better.

My girlfriend's had a iPod (not Touch) for years and she still uses it today. I guess that model of iPod is not a trustworthy brand, I'll certainly remember your experience when buying a new MP3 player. I just get those cheap MP3-only ones anyway for about $30 AUS, they do the trick for me.
