By the way I play totally fine on "intended arcade setup", thank you. Not that the "intended" way to play has any relevance. Developpers make the games, I play them the way I want to.

I'm starting to like all this bullet canceling in Cave games.

It makes me (a subpar player) feel good on the inside.

Re: Anyone else feeling the Daifukkatsu meh?
I'm slightly frusterated with people who complain about things, whether it's food at a restaurant, gasoline going up three cents, or scoring mechanics in a shmup. I've never been one to complain about much, and when it comes to niche games that are makig a comeback, I think folks here have little-no gratitude for the effort that goes into them. I've been playing shmups almost my whole life and never have I imagined they would become as incredible as they are now.
I don't watch and mimick replays, this is because I enjoy discovering my own routes through levels and I try to beat MY highscore. I know I'm in the minority there, but if an expert superplay makes the game look boring then why not play it in a way that YOU enjoy? If bullet cancelling isn't fun then try to laser your way through it, if the first loop is too easy then play on Very Hard, if autobombs suck then aggresively bomb ... There is an amount of freedom that shmups allow which I think people have forgotten all about.

Not everyone, but too many play the games on the easiest mode.. using every trick, safe spot, and strategy they can pluck from a superplay. Then they bitch that it's too easy, boring, or broken. Worse yet, they simply observe a video and damn the game based on that.

However, in the end a huge part of what makes the games enjoyable for some players like me, is the competitive value of the game, where you go for the highest possible scores on an even challenge with other players, playing the exact same game.
If you step out of the standard scoring game, suddenly you are alone playing your own customized game, and you will really miss discussing the main game and exchanging replays, ideas, enthusiasm with fellow players. So, it also makes sense to, not complain, but criticize DFK BL's core scoring game, so as to decide that it's a better idea to ignore it and play the core scoring game... of a different game.
Scores, replays, videos || I have written a guide about getting good at shmups. Check it out !

I have two friends on XBL that I kind of use for motivation. One is only a little bit better than me, so I have immediate rivalry. The other is far better than me, and I will have to try for a long time to get near his scores.chempop wrote: I don't watch and mimick replays, this is because I enjoy discovering my own routes through levels and I try to beat MY highscore.
Re: Anyone else feeling the Daifukkatsu meh?
Everyone is just as welcome to complain about aspects of the game that they dislike as much as they are welcome to praise aspects they like. Nobody should be expected to maintain a sense of gratitude towards the developers in every post that they make, and I don't feel like it has any real bearing on the quality of their posting.chempop wrote:I'm slightly frusterated with people who complain about things, whether it's food at a restaurant, gasoline going up three cents, or scoring mechanics in a shmup. I totally agree with this, I love the simplicity of older shmups, and Batsugun, Grindstormer, and Donpachi really bridged the gap into the new era while still having that oldschool feel. However, I don't think they should replace all of their crazy games with this style. I just think one or two oldschool releases now and then would be a nice changeup. Batsugun 2 would be wickedcharlie chong wrote:don't get me wrong i still love my caeves and appreciate the releases very much especially when well ported and they have more than exceeded that with this release.i'm just sad cos i want the toaplan on steroids feel of the early games back.i guess i'm just a simple guy with simple tastes(low skill as well).they should make batsugun 2 that wood make me happy![]()

Re: Anyone else feeling the Daifukkatsu meh?
The only thing that really bugs me about DFK is getting the first Ura boss. I seem to only get it about 50% of the time which leads to a lot of restarts.
Re: Anyone else feeling the Daifukkatsu meh?
Yeah, Promtheus might have set some absolutely insane records, but they don´t count at all because he didn´t play them on an actual arcade cab in an actual japanese arcade, the way these games were intended to be played. Yagawa should spend his time doing a Batrider sequel, with all the past Raizing and CAVE ships combined. I don´t care if that would be be completely unbalanced - it would also be completely mindblowing.kernow wrote:dfk is alright, no ibara or batrider though is it.

Returning to the topic at hand, I find DFK pretty amazing, aesthetically. Rainbow colored lasers are awesome, as is the Black Label soundtrack. The roar when hyper is activated really gets my blood pumping. I really enjoy just listening to this game.
Taken as part of the Donpachi continuity as a whole, I find the plot interesting as well. The game heavily favors the bosses as sympathetic characters. We don't even see the Donpachi pilot's face, but we are very familiar with the bosses/Element Dolls from their role in DOJ. I feel bad for them, particularly since Shooty, Exy, and Lienyan would have been lauded as heroes for saving humanity in the last game (were they human). Maybe I feel particularly moved since, having read Battle Angel, I have come to regard cyborgs as fundamentally human. The Element Dolls certainly -seem- human. Despite being giant cyborgs, they bleed, even scream in pain when damaged. I see them as essentially victimized, since they were infected with viruses that twisted their personalities, and that they had justifiable reason to be angry in the first place (being imprisoned and all). The game almost makes me feel as if the player is the villain this time. I feel like humanity might be in the wrong here.
Just the casual player's two cents.
