Beat 'Em Ups
Oh rueful fates, what petty games thou playeth with man's soul. A dagger betwixt my breast, for I have, as Pandora of antiquity doth opened that hateful box, unleashed a spiteful war of words. I dreamed nothing but to speak kind words and honey of a most beloved manner of games, but instead have ignited a debate as heated as all of Hephaestus' mighty volcanic kiln, from whence Zeus' fearful thunderbolts were born. And as the gods of yore rained their fury upon the earth, Zounds, words as bileful as the asp that undid the fair Cleopatra are hurled with disregard for all decency. And as speakers born from the tongues of the eloquent purple-clad orators of ancient Rome turn against their linguistical kinsmen, I cast my gauntlet to the sullen ground, and defy the heavens to spawn a picker of more nits, as none as every walked the cursed earth as have congregated within this blighted thread.
(Sorry, had to get in on the talking funny. And the know-it-all in me must point out Shakespeare isn't Old English. Old English is stuff like Beowulf, and it's completely unitelligible.)

It is late middle English and, according to some recent findings (sorry, i can't provide any bibliography right now) they spoke it like early middle english ( "toh beh or not toh beh" or, well, pre-wovel shift). Beowulf was written in one of the Old English dialects (don't remember which one) and happens to be perfectly intellegible if you learn the said dialect.alpha5099 wrote:

Hmm, maybe it's a point of contention among linguists, but I've generally heard Shakespeare's language described as Early Modern English. Perhaps it's a transitional period, and calling it either Modern or Middle English wouldn't be entirely accurate.Randorama wrote:It is late middle English and, according to some recent findings (sorry, i can't provide any bibliography right now) they spoke it like early middle english ( "toh beh or not toh beh" or, well, pre-wovel shift). I took a course last summer on Shakespeare, and the professor mentioned some interesting things about how they spoke back then. He said that historians believe that Romeo and Juliet really did take two hours back then, as the prologue states, they talked faster back then and audiences were far more atuned to fast banter than we are. The professor likened it to our ability to absorb mass amounts of fast-paced visual images from watching commercials and music videos. If someone from Elizabethen England was shown a 30 second commercial, they'd be just as baffled by the barrage of split second cuts as we would if we tried to follow the back-and-forth of an original Shakespeare performance.

Yes, this is something i studied in undergrad school in 2001 (ehr, i think) and in that year, the official version was changing, as there seem to be some proofs (appearing in these years) that the great vowel shift occured in the second half of the seventeenth century. Also, it seems that the change was quite abrupt (i.e. in thirty years, or two generations, it was complete), so it's more about a phase of overlapping than a distinct difference: one typical case involves new generations speaking in a different way, for instance.
Vaguely on topic: i would also Double Dragon and Metamorphic force, the latter for the extremely fast pace...

I don't know, I think the X-Men Arcade game is much more praised for its nostalgic factor than its actual gameplay quality. The game gets so repetitive and there is absolutely no difference between the characters other than style. That's a real downer when you have so many characters.

Hey DaBoss, I've been playing Final Fight since god knows when, and I love it to death.
To easily get past the flames on the factory stage just don't move up or down when you start. For some reason your character starts in the perfect stop to not get hit by the flames.
On one credit, the farthest i've gotten is the endurance stage with Abigale. Its too long and I just can't make it thru.
Check out this webpage to see a really nice input file for mame: http://www.aiva.emuita.it/capitolo_records.php
Somehow the player knows how to get gold bars and diamonds out of each crate and barrel. I've searched high and low on the internet to figure out how to do this, but can never get an answer.
Final Fight will probable always be my fav beat em up.

AFXisatwin:
Nice to see another serious beat em up player. Your strategy for the fire stage works like a charm. Thanks ":^)" How do you do on the section with three Andores. You know, the part on the elevator. I can almost never manage to beat that section without losing a life. Pretty annoying.
BTW, I use Guy. What about you? And do you play any other beat em ups?
Just to list tiers real quick, I would rank Haggar as the best, Guy as the worst, and Cody in between.
Most of the time, Guy's defense and offensive strength is just a bit too low to handle the huge crowds thrown at you in this game. You REALLY need to know how to move effectively, or your going to lose a lot of lives really quickly.
Cody has a bit more strength and defense, and his ability to use knives is REALLY helpful because there are SO many of those available to you.
Haggar is just TOO strong in this game: probably the best big man of any beat em up. Plus, his defense is really high, too. And that pile driver of his is a great crowd clearer, while doing massage damage to the unlucky individual.

My Trying Not To
I just got Final Fight One and River City Ransom EX from EB yesterday.
FFO is pretty great, although it's fucked up that you have to unlock the ability to give yourself a proper number of lives. 6? That's a bit much. I like the Alpha versions of the characters. I just wish there was Alpha Haggar. I know, I know, Haggar wasn't a character in any of the SFA games. But they could've designed a new Haggar. I think it would've been a very nice touch. Also, the oh so nice illustration from Shinkiro on the Capcom screen is just an awful tease once you see the heinous in game artwork for the characters.
I haven't gotten far in RCR yet, but it seems good. Controls are a tad weird, having to push A and B to jump, and I need to figure out what all the items do. I did find the Emo CD, that's one of the greatest lines in a video game. "Alex used the Emo. Alex stared down at his shoes and cried. Alex's toughness rose by 10."

I found the GBA version too easy myself, then I played the arcade version via mame and I was completly "served"

My Trying Not To
Some more Final Fight info (sorry if this puts everyone to sleep)
Three Andores is fairly easy, but it can be kind of random because the andores are fairly quick to attack when they get up. If your using Cody, throw the andore that was on the left to the right side with the others, then just get very close to them. Then just punch as quick as you can. With Haggar, pick up a pipe or a sword since he swings these faster. Sorry, but I don't have a strategy with Guy, since I rarely use him.
I almost always use Cody. He punches extremely fast and I can perform his infinite fairly well. Also, when I'm getting my butt kicked, I'll just pick up a knife.
With regards to tiers, I do agree that Haggar is very powerful, but each character is not too unbalanced. I've seen a couple 1CCs with guy.

Too easy on the harder modes without using the Alpha characters?SheSaidDutch wrote:alpha5099 wrote:I just got Final Fight One and River City Ransom EX from EB yesterday.
