Not sure which tournaments you are referring to, but my guess is you have no idea what is going on in the current tournament scene outside of EVO. For starters GGAC is still played at Japan's mighty Super Battle Opera. If you want to take the twingalaxies approach and not care because it's in Japan, here are just a few noteworthy stateside competitions which are still hosting GGAC annually:
- Seasons Beatings (Columbus, OH)
- Devastation (Phoenix, AZ)
- GVN Summer Jam (Philadelphia, PA)
I cannot speak knowledgeably regarding European events.
I'm not talking about just EVO, but everywhere. Yes, there are GGAC tournaments still running, but it is a HUGE shell of its former self. Final Round in 2008 (I was there) had the highest entrees (Even higher than 3s, which was the biggest game at the time, before SF4 came out) with close to 150 players. Some of the best GGAC players don't even play the game anymore and have moved on to other games, or they only play it because it's there. Compare the entrees of GGAC tournaments in 2007-2008 and compare them now, and ask any GGAC player if they really play the game as seriously as they did a few years ago, most will tell you they don't.
Japan is a different story, they still play that game pretty hard. I was referring to the United States and maybe Canada when I said GGAC was pretty dead.
By the way, twingalaxies sucks (as far as their methods go).
