Not many are a fan, but the music from that game, not to mention a *few* of the mechanics grows on you.

The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

Hey.... wait...
The most underrated shmups are Metal Black, Air Duel, Salamander II, Air Duel, Brave Blade, and Air Duel.
If this is true, then why are people putting Cyvern on the list??!! All I hear is Praise for Cyvern!!un·der·rate: Audio pronunciation of "Underrated" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (ndr-rt)
tr.v. un·der·rat·ed, un·der·rat·ing, un·der·rates
To rate too low; underestimate.

Metal Black is indeed underrated. I thought everyone loved Salamander II? If not, then yes, it is underrated as it kicks mucho ass!

Maybe the wording could have been more specific, but Icarus said to mention any games which didn't get (in our opinions) "enough discussion OR love." So I think games that get praise (but not enough of it) qualify.Darkcomet72 wrote:If this is true, then why are people putting Cyvern on the list??!! All I hear is Praise for Cyvern!!

Put me down as another Brave Blade fan. It may not be Raizing's best, but it's one heck of a fun game.
Ditto for Guardian Force too. Looks awkward at first, but once you get comfortable with the controls (set the turret rotation controls to the shoulder buttons!) a fantastically designed and very lengthy game opens itself up to you.
There's plenty of hidden gems out there, more people should know about them.

I'm not really fussy about definition. If you think a game is great, but it doesn't get much discussion or love, then lay your opinions on the tableBulletMagnet wrote:Maybe the wording could have been more specific, but Icarus said to mention any games which didn't get (in our opinions) "enough discussion OR love." Really? Last time I recall, everyone and their daddy enjoyed this game, especially those who have played the arcade/PS2 versions.Gradius III SNES
I don't like Iridion 2. As impressive as the graphics and sound are, your ship's hitbox is HUGE, and scoring is based too much on charge shots and accuracy, making most weapons like the multi-direction shot and radial gun obsolete.Oh, I forgot to add. Uridium 2. It rocks.
Anyways, I'd have to go with:
- 1941
- 1944
- Giga Wing
- Dangar UFO Robo
- Gradius Gaiden (in comparision to Gradius V)
- Darius R
- Super Nova (more liek Darius Force am i rite?)
- Area 88 (arcade)
Are you sure you're not confusing Uridium 2 (the Amiga multiscroller, the one I love) with Iridion 2 (the hideous GBA game)?gs68 wrote:I don't like Iridion 2. Uridium 2 and Iridion 2 are completely different games, but hideous for Iridion II is a matter of opinion. It has flaws, but there is much more that it does well, and I'm not just talking about the graphics and sound. I rather like the game. I liked playing the original Uridium on PC back when I was younger. Uridium is a classic multi-directional shmup and Uridium 2 is its sequel.Icarus wrote:Are you sure you're not confusing Uridium 2 (the Amiga multiscroller, the one I love) with Iridion 2 (the hideous GBA game)?gs68 wrote:I don't like Iridion 2. I'd say zero win gis definitely underrated.
It's written off as a sub-par toaplan shooter, but it doeshave unique and interesting ideas in it.
There's a lot of NES shooters that jut don't get the attention they deserve. so many, in fac,t that I can't go name them all (laugh). That said, Zanac idoesn't get much discussion and it's mighty fine.
In the rcades, here are some that get no respect around here that I've spotted.
1) SIlkworm. still quite innovative. best with two players. Appears to have some nasty rank hidden in it's code though that affects the boss attacks primarily.
2) Thundercade. no one ever talks about this one. but i found it a blast to play. sort of manic and not manic at the same time.
3) GOndomania. This one needs it's twistystick. it's only a shadow o fits former glory in MAME. fast, but not namic.
4) SIdeArms, but only when played at maximum difficulty (laugh). bumping up the difficulty gives the bosses extra attacks!
5) Slap Fight. one of the coolest shmup secrets ever, and some unique challenges.
6) Gaplus/Galaga 3. This is a suprizingly manic version of galaga for it's age. And using a capture beam on enemies and taking them for yoursef is priceless!

As I pointed out in the top 25 thread, Air Buster seems to be underrated. I think it's an excellent game, with gfx and sound that are at least par for the time. It's two-player, has a modest selection of weapons (and even if you lose 'em all your ship isn't helpless), gameplay varies between the levels, and difficulty is right where I like it.

Fine then. I wish I could stab people with a perfectly safe and non-injurous Nerf object of the stabeess choice over the internet. Better?Thunder Force wrote:black mariah: Do not post physical threat innuendo comments of this nature towards other forum members. This is in violation of the Forum Rules. Blow up self to involve enemies.
Shienryu
It always gets written off as a mediocre Raiden clone, but I like it more than Raiden and it's one of my favorite Saturn shmups. They really cleaned up the control and levels from Daioh and took it from crappy Raiden clone territory (lol @ Mad Shark) to friggin' sweet shmup land.
Loved it on Saturn, liked it on Playstation, damn near married the PS2 version.

Oh yeah. I just played past the third stage today, and boy was I amazed by the artwork! There are some really bizarre, unique and totally awesome character designs in this game! It seemed dull at first, but as I said, really picks up from the third boss and on. Some of the bullets patterns (yes, actual patterns to navigate through in a Mega Drive game!) are really well designed and the music fits the game perfectly. I'm very impressed by this little gem, it'll get a lot of playtime from this day and on!Marc wrote: Gynoug on MD seems to be reasonably well-regarded, but should be much better thought of than it seems to be IMO. Beautiful graphics, amazing soundtracks, solidly designed, and a well-paced difficulty curve. One of the MD's finest shooters.

well for one, i would like to say that PC-Engine SHMUPS dont get any much praise... Gunhed, Soldier Blade, Tatsujin, Coryoon, Aldynes, Burning Angel and AeroBlasters (imo, much better than the Genesis port, less flicker and better sound)... are examples..
but my fave on the PCE (CD) is the Cho Aniki series... ok, ok ok ok, before you get any ideas... i personally like it a lot... not because of the gameplay which is Good enough imo (esp. Ai Cho Aniki), but because of the Humor, but this humor is not for everybody, but i works for me... especially funny if you understand and appreciate japanese humor/culture... even the oh so GROSS PS1 Cho Aniki: Kyuukyoku Muteki Ginga Saikyou Otoko, i liked, becuz of its campyness and oddness..., yet it does get freaky and disturbing at times...
heres a screenshot for teh uninitiated.. hehehe
