I thought its Western SOTN name "Granfalloon" was actually cooler, for twisting a Kurt Vonnegut reference to describe a mass of shambling dead bodies.

Also, I get to play the "I knew him before he got famous!" card for nerd points.

That thing also shows up in the GBA ones (Aria of Sorrow, I can't remember it)

He was cool the first time but now he's been totally whored out. I too prefer the Granfalloon name, because Legion is just totally overreferenced and unimaginative as a name.

I must admit, I'm not much of a fan of new-style Castlevania (either Metroid-ish or 3D), but Konami does come up with some sweet ideas for bosses. Headhunter is cool. My favorite of all the games has to be the first Balore. You think you're about to fight another boring giant bat, but then he just comes out of nowhere and crushes it. Now that's awesome. Majuu Ou is still more awesome though. ;)

That page reminds me of the scale I assumed Legion / Granfalloon had, when I'd only read about it. I was thinking in pre-SOTN single-screen boss terms. A definite "holy shit" moment when the ground started shaking and that bastard rose up.

I wish you *had* to face its homing lasers, rather than them being a penalty for stripping away all the corpses. They're incredibly satisfying to dodge.

Granfalloon surely is the more interesting name of the two. Anyways, I wouldn't put Majuu Ou over the better Akumajou(s) out there but great game nonetheless. Creepy? A bit maybe.

On topic again, Silent Debuggers (TG16/PCE) shocked me almost to death back when I was a kid. The creepy atmosphere along with the enemies suddenly spawning behind you... haha good times

Best thing about Majuu Ou are the zombie hookers with shotfuns.

I found that stage very creepy - just playing a few months ago too. The game turned kind of crazy and lost focus after that, IMO. Of course, it was nice not being stuck in hellish labs or whatever after then. It did seem like a big change of pace though - that stage seemed to have a story behind it, and others were just "generic devestated city or sky castle" huzzah. Train was awesome.

I'll give a nod to Friday the 13th on the NES. We played a bunch of this as kids, but it was pretty frustrating. Vague about what to do, and then Jason would show up and slay your ass rather quickly.
Also, the fact that this even exsists..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWa9kTeLAGU
It's on the 2600, so be careful about the sound if you have your speakers loud. Maybe just mute it.

Yeah, Friday the 13th scared the hell out of me back in the day. I used to go and play it at my cousins and get owned. Years down the road I bought it myself, twice, and continued to get owned to this day. One of the hardest games around.

Splatterhouse 3 has always been one of my favorites since it came out. I remember getting it and almost being too afraid to play it. The first boss (that later becomes a natural enemy) used to scare the hell out of me in his 2nd form. He shoots a giant tongue randomly and it always used to make me jump.

Of course nowadays these "scary" games aren't so much, but still, Splatterhouse 3 has some very chilling imagery, and the story is tense (and depressing) as hell.

I still have to give it to the original Super Famicom Clock Tower for being genuinely creepy. I remember the first time I played it a couple of years ago, as it kinda gave me the chills at one point.

I can see how you'd get that. The story is pretty twisted.

I'd have to say Galshell 2, though I can't help but think I'm forgeting another creepy game from a long time ago...

Also, if first-person shooters based around 2D sprites would be counted, I'd have to say Cactus's Mondo Agancy. That game freaked me out the first time I played it.

If you could use a mouse with this game all would be fine.
At least in Clock Tower (2) for PSX you can use a mouse. The DPad on the SNES one makes things a little funky, though. Does the PSX re-release of Clock Tower 1 (Jpn only) utilize the mouse?

According to the back of the case, yes.

Can you use the SNES mouse for the SNES release? I would think so, since I'm pretty sure Clock Tower was post-Mario Paint.

that horror movie style might work with 3d graphics, but in 2d .. nope. i don't think this can be compared to yume nikki much (they're two entirely different games), but corpse party doesn't seem all that scary. especially with little girls shouting everytime something supposedly scary happens. D:

They both feature playing as girls, death, and were both made in RPG maker. I'd say that they have a lot in common.

I think the depth of the music in Corpse Party really adds to the feel. I'd like to get this game sometime.

Sure but they're different kinds of horror. Yumi Nikki is a very subtle horror, while Corpse Party is pretty much in your face. You also don't directly compare Silent Hill and Resident Evil because "both have guns and tank controls".

How do I even reply to this.

Ok, according to you, comparing a game to another game which is also 2D, also made in RPG maker and also contains horror elements (except Corpse Party actually has an advantage by having a story and background), is a bad thing because "the horror elements are different"

The only appropriate response I can find here is "lol k guy"

It depends on how you define creepy. Personally I find Edmund to be deeply disturbing. I played it without know what it was about and was filled with dread as you could see the plot was going somewhere dark first.

BTW Corspe Party part 1 on the PC is freeware and has been translated to english, Ive yet to play it myself but it looks great.

homepage http://www.gris2.com/~corpse_pc/index.html

Going slightly off topic into the realm of 3D, Has anyone played any of the PC Prenumbra games or that new Amnesia: The Dark Descent thats by the same makers? I once tried out the freeware prenumbra 1 but only got 5 mins into the game so I cant really know how good they are. Ive heard that they are scary as fuck from one or 2 other ppl.

Penumbra and Amnesia are also both games I plan on picking up eventually, as the Penumbra 3 pack can be scored for just a mere 10 bucks. I'm kinda afraid I won't be able to play them because I am a big baby. Amnesia looks the most interesting out of the lot with that castle atmosphere. Can't seem to find it to buy, though...Still, I haven't played either series myself :(

I've played the Penumbra games and Amnesia. Amnesia started out cool but not really scary/creepy, then I was worried about having a heart attack. It is intense and the way the physics works makes it even more stressful.

I actually have the PSP version of Corpse Party. I picked it up on a whim since I hadn't played either a visual novel or a horror game in a while. The horror elements are actually really well done, the voice acting is solid (as far as I can tell the game is mostly newish seiyuu, probably due to budget?), and the art is nice. Yes, the 'map' screens are still rather pixelly, but I don't mind that.

On an amusing side note, the name of the school it takes place in, Tenjin Primary School, is actually the same name as a school where I taught English for a year.

The atmosphere of dread in the game is done really well, and it's genuinely creepy. Most of the time. The game has one big problem - in order to proceed, you generally need to make sure certain events happen. And there's no indication of what you've missed. (In one chapter, if you miss a conversation scene where some characters get to know each better, at the end of the chapter you'll get a bad ending and have to replay it, for example.) This sucks. The suspense just dies when you have to do the same scenario again but are desperately clicking on everything trying to dig up something you missed. Hence, I'm playing it with a guide after I fail the chapters once. Cheating? Sort of. But it makes it a lot more enjoyable.
