Funnily enough, I play the PSX port of Assault in tate mode on a horizontal screen as it controls the same no matter how you look at it.

Amidar, Bombjack (Twin).
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Huh? I don't get how that would work.
Pushing up on both sticks makes the tank drive up screen, which in your case would be across the screen.

You can also think about it along the following line: pushing both sticks FORWARD makes the tank drive FORWARD (i.e. where the barrel points) etc. Works for me, mayhap because I never played it on a cab. This and the stages are not designed around any particular screen orientation. Think the original Grand Theft Auto - similar "tank controls", except the screen in GTA doesn't rotate and the controller is different.
I just play Assault with a Dual Shock 2 and my only complaint is that I cannot map the fire button onto R2/L2 (it's R1/L1 instead). D-pad and face buttons make for the sticks. Works a treat.
