BTW, Famicom is STILL very popular in Japan, even for being so old. I understand that it is more popular than the PSP with younger players.
Weird, seeing as the PC Engine was slighty more popular (and had a bigger catalogue) than the Famicom.

Yeah I actually only recently discovered Recca a few years back and I have to say it may be one of the fastest shmups I've ever played which is outstanding if you consider the the hardware restrictions then. It's really almost too fast for me to really enjoy though, I get a headache every time I play it but I have to admit it's a technical marvel for sure!

The PC Engine was more popular than the Famicom?! First time I've ever heard that. I know it was a big success domestically, but the Famicom was a juggernaut. :|

Bump from the winter.....

I just got Recca (repro...can't afford an original) in the mail today and popped it in. I've been avoiding videos and whatnot cause I wanted to experience it cold myself before seeing quite what it was like.

Gotta say....Oh my GOD!!!! How the FUCK did they get that many sprites moving that goddamned fast on the friggin NES???? I thought Dodonpachi and Giga Wing 2 and shit like that were manic...till I played Recca! It chewed me up and spit me out so fast I was afraid to blink! And the boss patterns? WTF?? How in gods name could you EVER dodge em????? I got to the level 2 boss on normal with a score of about 460K. On timed and score modes....OBLITERATED. Blows my mind.

Man...what a game! This is seriously a shmup for masochists!

It flickers and trips over its own frames quite a bit, though. I believe Zanac sports comparable sprite count and also gets quite frantic, although it's less of a memoriser. The cool part, of course, is how great Recca looks without flexing multi-layered backdrops, parallax scolling and whatnot.

By memorising and exploiting the safe spots, and timing your charged attack well?

Fair enough :) It's just pretty daunting at first for sure. I didn't even have time to LOOK for safe spots before I got flat out obliterated :D And the charge attack is so slow I haven't even used it yet other than to test it lol

Charged attack is pretty much the cheapest bomb in the history of shmupping, and you can still fire your extra weapon whilst charging. Reminds me of the thumpin' weapon 6 in Zanac Special Version, except weapon 6 is ammo-based and trickier to use (okay, that's a moot point).

Recca without charge shot/bomb = nearly impossible. With charge shot/bomb = quite easy imo since ive completed it even with my meager shmupping skills

reason is that the charge shot is also a shield (bullet only). Most ppl dont realise this fact. I highly recommend reading the strategy guide in this forum. Recca is a great example that finding out how a shmup works and rules of play can make a world of difference.

lol...I think this one gets out on a technicality. There is an aftermarket full US box/manual/cart set for Recca :P

Does the reproduction version of RECCA include a decent manual or boxart - does anyone have a link to some scans?

I may go the whole one day and pick up the original but two things put me off:

1. I do not own a famicon - I only look at the boxes and manuals of the Shmups I own on the FC so it would be a little insane to pick it up just to "look at it" :D

2. the price doesn't scare me so much, but my "priorities do" :D

I tend to play RECCA on the Dreamcast using a NES emulator and it's ace :)

I do not believe those things can be shared here.

I wonder if this'll ever get a Wii VC release. I may end up just getting a NES flashcart in order to play this properly on a tv in my NES. I'm tired of trying to find a reasonably priced cartridge.

First time playing, I was shocked. :o

Brillant game, possibly the most intense 8-bit shmup ever, even trumpping the mighty Zanac 8)

I just found this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrQn-O_zFRc

Apparently Recca has an easter egg hidden in the code, which can be unlocked with a very small patch. There's some blast processing going on.
