Patch is great, now I've swtiched to playing wih Hold Laser and it's great smoothness has really improved. I need a Bee map if I'm ever going to see a second loop though.

Just came across on Cave World's twitter. I'm shocked and kind of disappointed. I want this on a real system, not a phone.

Incoming Cave update promises some nifty extras. Via Twitter:
Curious how detailed the history bit will be.cave_world_en wrote: We will be releasing an update to Dodonpachi Resurrection tomorrow, the 19th! Along with a couple bug fixes, the update includes...
1. History function - Read about the story of each Dodonpachi game (first time in English!).
2. Hidden BGM - New hidden BGM which will be explaining how to find in a fantastic video. A must-see for MasaKING fans.
3. Screen-flipping mode for iPad users. Requested by many to avoid hitting the upscaling button.

Has anyone here reached Hibachi in iPhone mode or found a video of someone doing it? I have some questions.

Got the update, the new BGM is dumb, but hey. History is cool, but I wish it had an entry for Donpachi as well.
Re: Next Cave iPhone port is Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu
Is it possible to get the Japanese voices and text on this game without changing the region of the iPhone?
I'd prefer the Japanese voices over the Engrishy ones. :p

Not at present. When I asked Cave they said they'd ask the development team about it, but don't count on it yet.Icarus wrote:Is it possible to get the Japanese voices and text on this game without changing the region of the iPhone?

Re: Next Cave iPhone port is Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu
Got this and ESPGaruda 2 the other day. Awesome games. Interestingly, despite usually using my left thumb for movement in videogames, I use my right thumb for the Cave iPhone games. I guess it's because it feels nothing like a Dpad, and therefore I have more inherent dexterity in my right thumb. But yes, wow. Playing it on the tube, I keep catching people sneaking looks at it. It looks absolutely gorgeous! Iphone mode is pretty fun with all the bullet scraping too. The new music isn't great, but then Daifukkatsu has pretty much the worst Cave S/T anyway (apart Black Label that is, which had an amazing soundtrack...) Obviously, this is a game to play on the train rather than a big, serious shooter, but in my eyes, it doesn't invalidate the experience. I definitely recommend.
Re: Next Cave iPhone port is Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu
IIRC CAVE did say in their Twitter that if you change the language settings to Japanese, the voices will be Japanese as well.
Re: Next Cave iPhone port is Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu
Yeah but that means changing the language settings for the device. Which is essentially changing the region as it makes everything Japanese.Sasupoika wrote:IIRC CAVE did say in their Twitter that if you change the language settings to Japanese, the voices will be Japanese as well.

Bought an iPod touch 8gb today, it's really fucking great. Touch screen is imo a fresh and great way to play shmups.
Re: Next Cave iPhone port is Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu
I´m going to get one as well once I have the money. At first I really hated the idea of CAVE shmups on iOS devices because I was thinking, like a lot of other people, that these things suck as gaming devices because of the lack of buttons.cul wrote:Bought an iPod touch 8gb today, it's really fucking great. But the more videos I watch the more fun it looks to play these ports. I love how he sometimes just zips around on the screen like crazy, and at other times does these smooth dodges:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4iOdu4u ... re=related
Now I really, really want to try this out myself. I mean, as much as I love my d-pad, these touch controls looks very accurate (the onscreen buttons not so much, I mean the actual ship moving part). From what I can tell they made a virtue out of a necessity - it certainly looks a lot more intriguing than emulating a d-pad on a touchscreen, like so many other games do (and which I hate with a passion).
Directly controlling ship speed is something I always wondered about. The Compile-style speed selection on the fly was kind of hamfisted, and CAVE already kind of did it with their "hold button to slow down" style (though that always changed your shot as well).
You know, when the 3DS got first annouced I was certain I´m going to get one, being the big handheld dork that I am. But with these two CAVE games shooters on them and more surely coming later down the road, I don´t think I need any other portable console besides an iPod Touch. Just moving around my finger and my ship following the movement... I think I´ll really like it.
And man, I can´t believe I´m buying something as mainstreamy as an iPod Touch... to play one of the most niche games available on it, and just being able to download them like that, without any region locking bullshit. CAVE shmups in my bed or on the toilet... finally I don´t feel like an idiot being both a handheld junkie and an STG enthusiast

Oh, and I`m happy really good players like Icarus are enjoying these games as well. Seems like a good sign to me!

Re: Next Cave iPhone port is Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu
Best portable shooting game ever. I just started playing it on Hard difficulty with the correct arcade-style bullet count (rather than the neutered patterns on Normal diff.), and working on doubling my 109bil score. Much more fun this way, since it is now easier to boost your hit counter from stage 2 onwards.Frederik wrote:Oh, and I`m happy really good players like Icarus are enjoying these games as well. If Cave made MMP! or Futari for iOS, I'd die happy.

Re: Next Cave iPhone port is Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu
I´m especially happy that there is finally a sensible way to play vertical shmups on a handheld (the only other instance in my knowledge being Judgement Silversword on the Wonderswan). As I mentioned, being a handheld geek AND a shmup fan used to be one of the worst combinations possible, and I remember how pumped I was even about the watered-down (but still enjoyable) Ketsui Death Label. EspII and DFK looks bloody brilliant judging by the videos.Icarus wrote: Best portable shooting game ever. And man, MMP seems like the funnest Yagawa game since Batrider to me, it would be a fantastic addition to the other two games. I´m already sold on getting an iPod Touch (when I finally have enough money again), and I´m sure there are more iOS ports on the pipeline. Right now I´m guessing it´s a tie between Deathsmiles and Futari, but since they already got the vert format figured out (I can´t really imagine how the two-directional shooting in DS would work on the touchscreen) Futari seems more likely to me.
It´s funny, I somehow completely lost any interest in the upcoming 3DS or even the PSP2. This article pretty much sums it up for me:
http://wosblog.podgamer.com/2010/04/12/ ... -argument/
(Written by Stuart Campbell, who got banned pretty quickly here - I still like a lot of stuff that he writes.)
Oh, and I´m more of a casual visitor to other gaming sites like Neogaf or Eurogamer, and it´s interesting how positively a lot of newcomers speak about these games. It´s really not just about bringing these games to a portable platform - but to a system that´s easily accessible, with none of the importing stuff going on and very affordable prices too. Sure, my initial reaction was "LOL shmups on crApple iShit amirite, it doesn´t even have buttans!!!", but the more I think about it the more sense it makes for CAVE to have this two-channel distribution method - the 360 ports for the classic enthusiasts, and the iOS ports for newcomers and/or handheld fanboys like me.
They´ve been on a roll with their ports lately, and I think it´s helping them in a big way. I´m not really following the news closely, but to me it really feels like a new renaissance for CAVE. And I´m still a bit stunned that I´m going to buy an iPod... to play shmups on. Weird times we live in!

Re: Next Cave iPhone port is Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu
Handhelds have their place. This goes for iPhone or GameBoy. But their place is on the train, at the DMV, or on break at work. When at home a TV or monitor with a real controller is obviously better. I always find it funny when people play handhelds at home. The iPhone is a serious piece of hardware, but my brain is hardwired to a square gate. Nothing wrong with playing DDP on Mame or Saturn at home, at the arcade on the cab (I wish) and then at the DMV on the iPhone. But the iPhone will always be the worst version no matter what handheld fanboys say. I think it's cool for Cave to port these games to the iPhone for us to play. It's just not cool when people replace the real thing with the portable. The iPhone is no replacement. But hey, it's also a phone.
I wonder if future arcades or home consoles will use dedicated touch controls with buttons and switches becoming a thing of the past. I can definitly see it becoming popular in the casual gaming public as a whole. It's early in the development of touch controls, they are only going to get better. But I still think the decades of Shmups created before that day will be best played on a joystick; the control mechanism the games were designed for are a part of the overall piece of art. A good shmup is art. That means Cave games that exist now will always be better on a joystick. Also, future handhelds will always be inferior to future consoles and cabs. Size matters and has advantages in both directions (power versus portability). So Cave shmups on the iPhone is a lose/lose versus the real thing. But like I said, it has it's place. Just like the Mosa Lisa on a stamp. It isn't the piece of art the original is, but at least you can mail stuff with it.

Care to explain, or are you just specifically trying to be a jerk? I'm cool with that if you are, but I prefer actual discussion and opinion. I can't tell if you are disagreeing with my points, or just the fact that I exist.

Re: Next Cave iPhone port is Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu
Not necessarily. Shmups are not like fighting games; keyboard or pad use can easily beat joysticks into the ground, and joysticks can do the same to keyboard or pad.Hair wrote:-the decades of Shmups created before that day will be best played on a joystick

Re: Next Cave iPhone port is Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu
I agree that a D-pad performs as well as an arcade stick, even for fighters. I even think a D-pad can technically be faster than a stick because there is less travel. I'm talking about feel, nor performance. Using a D-pad is a totally different feel and experience than an arcade stick. Keyboard? I won't even go there (yuck).
Touch controls are neat, but they are not the "same". Shmups, as a genre, came about through decades of evolution in technology and the culture surrounding the games. Arcade sticks, with the right gate for the game, are just the most accurate way to play a game designed to be... well... played on them. I do believe game designers and developers are artists, and the controller is part of the overall experience of the finished art.
In 20 years shmups will be different and may be designed around control devices we can't even imagine. They will be best played on those devices. Games designed around an arcade joystick are still designed around an arcade joystick no matter what the future brings. You can prefer whatever control device you like, just don't think you are getting the same experience as was originally intended, because the controller matters a lot. You also don't have to care about what the developers originally designed the game for. I don't think "better" was the word I should have used. Some people think a glossy print of Starry Night looks "better" than the real painting even though glossy paper didn't exist when van gogh painted it. I'm just saying "different than the original experience from which it is based". DDP is a classic, must play shmup. The iPhone version can never replace the real experience. It does offer modern advantages, but you're not getting the 100% real thing when the controls change and the visuals shrink.
Ya... I like to type a lot about shmups. Deal wit it yo.
