This was announced a long time ago, but I am pumped as fuck. I've been waiting for this for years. Love the movies and OVA. Do not like the later series, however. Too mondern/attitude.

Wow, look at it! The colour, the animation, the warmth. It's like, all hand drawn and painted and looks great.

It's almost like the future... except it's the past.

Sigh, how I miss when anime was good. :(

Thanks for the heads up, might have to track it down.

I didn't see that, but when I had Facebook I got into a huge argument with some goons about the release. Now, this shit hasn't been released EVER in the U.S., and when announced all of these people started bashing Righstuf because it wasn't dubbed. Jesus christ, I don't get it. People were saying they won't buy because they didn't like subtitles, but would rather listen to some cheesy American bro/gurl poorly voice act. In their defense they said subtitles took away from the "art" and that you couldn't pay attention to the anime because you were constantly reading. Do people really not know how to multi-task?! I miss old anime as well...

I wish I can send people back in time to the days where buying one US anime Laserdisc was the same price as a whole DVD boxset.

I get it that people are not very fast at reading and would want to just watch something and not have to read the subs. To say it takes away from the art is bullshit though  ive yet to hear a really great cartoon redubed in another language.

You seen simpsosns in any other language than english? It just does not feel right at all.

Yeah, I was kind of offended. I have no problem if you can't read fast enough or anything like that, then yeah, dubbing is fine; I just don't prefer it. What was amazing is that the majority of all of these people were upset that it wasn't dubbed. Are modern anime fans this silly? I have been to a few cons...the answer is sadly "yes".

The project eden movie is still one of my old favorites. I still have that LD lying on a shelf downstairs. That movie is alot of fun..... it's almost more music video than movie at times. The opening credits were really good.... the animation had that whole James Bond intro thing going on.

I still have a few LDs downstairs, most are just nostalgia for me now and not used. I have Macross DYRL signed my Shoji Kowamori, met him at a con in DC. My Street Fighter 2 movie, Silent Mobius movie and a few gunbuster LDs.... along with Salamander and the Ys LDs. I'll probably hang onto those. Everything else I gave away or sold.

I'd love to have that Project Eden movie on Blu-ray though. Along with DYRL.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

I really do prefer to watch stuff subtitled, but I will watch some of it in english especially if it's something I've seen allot. Almost all of the dubs a terrible. There have been a few exceptions were I like the english version better, Colorful is the only one that comes to mind right now. We're lucky now that DVD's have the option for both language tracks. I come from the era of fan subbed VHS tapes that were passed around. The translations weren't always that well done, and the quality would get beat up really quick. Sometimes they were hard to track down, but it became a special thing when we all got together to watch something new. On the plus side, it was usually only the best stuff that made the rounds. All the crap got filtered out, or wasn't available. I really didn't start seeing shitty anime untill it came out on DVD.

Dirty Pair is a series that I've always wanted to like more than I do. No doubt the fact that the first anime bearing the pair to hit the UK was Flash can't have helped. Project Eden I'm luke warm about, despite its legendary status. Mostly I dislike the stories that treat Kei as the main character with Yuri more like a sidekick. They're supposed to be partners, damn it. I may give the TV series a try, but does anyone know how Kei-centric it is? The only entries in the franchise I've consistantly loved are Adam Warren's comics.

On the dub vs sub issue, I used to be totally pro-sub, but in recent years I've started to appreciate good English dubs more. Aside from that I find that a lot of sub scripts tend to be overly reverential to the phrasing of the original dialogue, to the point of feeling flat and lifeless. Shows I prefer in English include: Black Lagoon, Big O, Code Geass, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell (all iterations), Le Chevalier D'Eon, and a bunch of others. The best version of Porco Rosso I've heard is the French dub, thanks to Jean Reno perfectly fitting the title role.

The only anime where I like the English dub more than the original is Dead Leaves. Because the voices really fucking fit their characters, and the plot and art styles have nothing in common with Japanese culture in general, so a different language doesn't look out of place.

I'm generally the strongest advocate of subbing you can find, but for some animation, it works a lot better in English. Miyazaki has gone on record saying he prefers the English language soundtrack of his films, and saying that female Japanese voice actors in particular are overly "coquettish". Generally I prefer the Japanese track on his films. American voices, especially American children's voices tend to grate on me.

There was a really cool dub on the (unfortunately heavily censored) UK DVD of Miike Takashi's Kuroshiya Ichi. All the voice actors were English, and it gave it whole new British gangster kind of feeling. Given Miike's themes of transnationalism and jarring use of different languages that crop up in this film, it was strangely apt. Fantastic!

The only Japanese cartoon I can think of where I actively HAD to watch it dubbed because the original language track was crap was Cowboy Beebop. The Japanese is just so flat and lacks character. And there's a crazy mesh of different nationalities in it.

And Afro Samurai. It would seem a shame to hire Samuel L Jackson and not listen to his sonorous tones :)

I think he hired himself for this role, being one of the executive producers and all. :)

It wouldn't be the same without Samuel L. Jackson's powerful voiceovers for the Afro Samurai character. The sequel of "Afro Samurai: Resurrection" anime is just over the top in terms of samurai blade slashing kills of small fry.

You really think they are that Kei heavy? I have to extremely disagree. I think if anything Yuri is more-so shown as the leader, while lots of focus is on Kei with her tom-boyish mannerisms and love interests. Or maybe I just back her up because I have an otaku-lame-o crush on her.
