Well - maybe next year .... :?
...or they just don't want to go through the pain that is disassembling all of their arcade library for those games they don't have any sourcecodes anymore.

You're resurrecting lots of old Irem threads, man.

I sent them a couple of e-mails asking if they would please release their arcade games as a compilation or (more realistically) as individual downloads on Wii Virtual Console/XBLA. They never replied.

I would take the compilation on the PSP at this point. Irem seems to prefer that system and it's already got a steady R-Type presence with its PSOneClassics and tactical games. It's a shame they didn't follow Taito's or Capcom's examples during the last generation, as far as PS2 comps. are concerned. I wonder how well those things (and SNK's numerous comps.) actually sold.

Funny this thread shows up now, as I've been playing a lot of Ninja Spirit lately on Mame, because of a competition.

Horrible game by the way. The controls aren't responsive, the hit detetction is completely broken and scoring on the game is about staying on the same spot killing enemies for 4 minutes straight, by just pressing the button very quickly.

Ninja Spirit is a great game, what are you on about.
The only thing wrong with it is that utterly ridiculous final stage where it requires you to perfectly memorize a safe path through the ninja maze before the final boss.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

HUH?!
...
How come the controls aren't responsive? You've got much input lag or what? My only complaint would be about the slowdown (but man, is it one gorgeous looking game), which doesn't really break the controls either.

I've lost the count about how many times I pressed jump and my ninja doesn't jump. From what I get, when you are on the 1st frame of the attack animation, it won't jump. It's a pain in the ass.

Oh yeah, and Gradius Syndrome.

And Score Miliking. Heavy. My hi-score so far is 1.25 million and I haven't even beaten the game. And I think I can get close to 2 million, but I can't care to play it again.

Well clearly the game wasn't meant to be played for score. But I've never had a problem with unresponsive controls. Maybe there's something wrong with your MAME emulation?

Some other people playing the same competition also complained about that.

From level 1 to 3 you are basically invencible if you have sword powered up + 2 options.

Hey, at least you asked! You do deserve credit for that. At this point in time, I would take an IREM collection on any of the current platforms. IMO, they're sitting on too many awesome arcade games that gamers would purchase. Does anyone know how well Irem Arcade Classics on the PS1 and Saturn sold? I would ask the same question about their Image Fight & X-Multiply collections. Because if those didn't sell well back in the '90's, perhaps that's at least part of the reason why they have no plans to release a collection in the future.

Sadly, I could see the rationale in expecting an arcade collection disc to be a flop for today's market. What would work a lot better is finding ways to emulate the games for the Virtual Console or XBLA, but it's pretty obvious that Nintendo/America and Microsoft barely give half a shit about raising the quality of those services for the old-school hardcore gamers that enjoy things like shmups, etc... Nintendo of America just wants to make sure they give everybody Mario Tennis, Donkey Kong Jr. Math, and anything else they can think of that's not Earthbound. To this day, I almost feel like the PC Engine version of Gradius II was added by mistake. XBLA wants to make sure its arcade games never exceed the quality one might still find in the local bowling alley. These potential avenues need to be opened wider or Irem will have no reason to not keep themselves plenty busy making PSP strategy titles.

That's just a rad quote. sounds like something off the back of an NES game box.

Just one more reason why I really wish IREM would do this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWjZQj9rVe4 I've never even heard of this game before, but it looks AWESOME!!

They might not have planned it, but it's happened thanks to the efforts of DotEmu.
