I was like, "who cares", and then I saw it is done by ARC. BlazBlue! Well, it will look good. Very interested.

HOT DAMN! Forget Contra Rebirth (probably). This looks like it's got potential.
SNK needs to make a Metal Slug 8 like this.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

I have no idea if it's gonna be good, but those are gonna be some sweet graphics.

Metal Slug hasn't been good since part 3, and that makes me sad. They should give it up.

I don't get excited too much over games anymore because the bigger the hope the bigger the disappointment. That one screenshot looks nice, but I really doubt the whole game will maintain that standard. I'll get excited when it's confirmed to be a hit.

It reminds me of Dolphin Blue a lot.

Yeah, same here. It doesn't look anything like Contra, but it clearly isn't intended to, so I'm pretty excited to see how (or if) they'll play around with the formula and strike out in new directions.

Sequel to my favorite Contra... or maybe prequel if that's really supposed to be Bahamut.

It takes place before HC according to Tomm Hulett, aye. I understand he isn't working on it, but named it.

That screenshot made me in my pants.

Now here's to hoping the game plays [and looks] as awesome as that single shot.

I'm hoping for something that plays a bit similar to Contra 4, with or without the grappling hook.

I'm skeptical of all XBLA releases now after that Zombie Apocalypse thing.

And that Rocket Knight thing, ugh.

Why can't Taito make good XBLA games?

or SNK

or Square-Enix

or Gulti

Awesome. Been a while since a good run 'n gun came along, hope this fits the bill.

Why can't they make a Contra game looking like Contra? Shattered Soldier did this much with polygons. I still think Konami should port CSS and Gradius V (it's the same MGS2/Z.O.E. engine, isn't it?) to current gen platforms. If ports of Naomi/DC games on XBLA are okay with 360 owners...

Hopefully they utilize real level design (like those fucking horrible Metal Slug games.) Hard Corps is great but too Simon Says-y.

Now that you mention it, Contra Rebirth wasn't that hot either. It makes me miss the days when 2D games were the norm and devs put effort on them.

Mega Man 9 is one of the few decent DLC games because it's low budget look fits the low budget of this kind of games. Now, if Capcom would just do a compilation with all the unlocked stuff, I'd buy it pronto. Otherwise, I'll just play it at my friends' houses.

I hope it turns out good, but I miss the old graphical style. Accidentaly this style is emulated by countless mainstream shooty adventures of Brown & Grey these days, but Contra was there first and chances are it'll still be there even when the mainstream aesthetics move on. I mean, what makes Contra a Contra? Contra makes Contra a Contra. You see it and you can tell it's Contra. Same with "proper" 2D Castlevanias. With this one, maybe I would guess from the screenshot, or maybe I wouldnt.
Still, it's just one screenshot, and it doesn't look bad at all.

Then again, this one doesn't even have Contra in its title

That screen looks nice enough to keep me interested for now.

Since when was Contra dull brown and grey? I recall that beginning with Legacy of War, when things started falling apart.

The only strange part of that screenshot is that the sky is bright and shiny. Hard Corps exuded a dark but colorful cyberpunk atmosphere and it still remains to be seen how this game will look.

First screenshot looks nice to me. The last run+gun I enjoyed was Alien Hominid.

Who told it ever was dull brown and grey? Look around and Contra appears to be aesthetically and thematically quite impactful a franchise, emulated (maybe not directly) by many of most recent games. Konami can be forgiven for trying to do something different, but does it have Contra looks?

This isn't a Contra game so none of it matters. The article calls it a "spiritual sequel to Contra: Hard Corps" and a "homage to legacy Konami run-and-gun platformers". So far the only tangible connections we know of to any Contra game are the main character and what appears to be the spreadshot. The former means nothing as far as gameplay is concerned and the latter, while of course commonly associated with Contra, isn't exactly exclusive to that series.

Also the game isn't developed by Konami. Put those two facts together and the game could look and feel very different from any Contra game. Hopefully it'll still be just as awesome.

Emulated with varying results I might add. I'm neither disdaining this style, nor calling it "dull". Personally I don't mind metal, concrete and brownish post-processing in my games.

Hard Corps was pretty cartoony to begin with. One of the playable characters is a sunglasses-wearing wolf-man for christsakes.

Cartoony is okay with sprites. I admire Contra: HC for its great utilisation of the hardware's distinctive colour palette. It doesn't look compromised.
