Me too, but if that crappy song is included in the DLC BGM, I know I'll regret this.chempop wrote:I think I remember reading that the DLC card was going to unlock the alternate soundtrack, which is why I went for the LE, actually I've been getting all the LE's lately.Hmm.. it says there's going to be a DLC card with the first print. Since this got bumped...
I've been without internet access for almost a week and I've been swamped at work for far longer than that, so I'm a bit behind on what we know about this. Can anyone kindly organize whatever information should be added to the first post of this thread? Much appreciated :3

Re: [JP 360] Deathsmiles II X coming on May 27, Preorders open!
Apparently top quality 2D animation in high resolutions would be much, MUCH more laborious than in typical arcade lo-res. Not cost-efficient at all. It might be pre-rendered, but perhaps there is still a lot to do on pixel art level to make it look as good as it does. There is a reason why Vanillaware made Muramasa for the Wii, where they can get away with low resolution.Acid King wrote:Really though, they'd be better off just doing high resolution rendered sprites instead of mediocre 3d. When will one of these companies learn that awesome looking 2d games will stand out like diamonds in the bag full of shit that is the current gaming marketplace? The sprites in Futari, Deathsmiles, and Galuda look ridiculous in hi definition, and as far as eye candy goes, is far more impressive looking than the stuff in that 2X video. People are going to bitch about the length of the game, the difficulty, and the "it should be $10" bullshit regardless of whether the games are in 2d or 3d, so I don't know why they're willing to sacrifice one of the major factors that makes their games unique.

Re: [JP 360] Deathsmiles II X coming on May 27, Preorders open!
Most companies use 3D models because it's much easier to animate, and, more imporantly, easier to iterate on. What if you want to change the speed of a particular sequence? In traditional 2D you have to redo the entire sequence, where in 3D you can simply timescale the frames, or make small alterations that require a lot less work.
And on Muramasa, high rez artwork does not increase the cost of animation. It would only require more intial artist time to create the assets, but that's likely very minimal compared to what you get back, and most artists would prefer to get as close to perfect as they can. No one likely really WANTS to do lower-rez on the art side, and for a company like Vanillaware it would seem like terribly diminishing returns to focus on lower quality art as a cost-saving measure when that's the key selling feature of their titles. As we've seen with Cave, they create most of their more recent 2D art in high-rez, and then down-rez it for the arcade, not the reverse.
I would suspect that releasing on the Wii was likely driven by the low cost to get licensed by Nintendo these days. For such a small title, you don't want to have to face off against Sony or Microsoft's approval process and licensing fees. With the Wii you get it on the shelves for much cheaper and with very little hassle from the more hands-off Nintendo. This is why so much shovelware can survive on the Wii, and why you don't see it as much on the other consoles. This is not to say that Muramasa is shovelware, just that it survives by squeaking through the same loopholes.

Re: [JP 360] Deathsmiles II X coming on May 27, Preorders open!
This paragraph is particularly interesting considering Nintendo used to require all third party developers to agree to exclusivity contracts -and- agree not to exceed x amount of games in y time way back just to get licensed. Those days are over, but I'm not entirely convinced licensing was the main barrier in Muramasa's case... I always thought it was just cheaper to develop on the Wii than it is for the other two current-gen consoles.8 1/2 wrote:I would suspect that releasing on the Wii was likely driven by the low cost to get licensed by Nintendo these days. Sadly, most producers/publishers' patience has its limitations.8 1/2 wrote:And on Muramasa, high rez artwork does not increase the cost of animation. You sure Cave don't retouch their graphics in low resolutions? Vanillaware graphics don't really have pixel art looks (they are filtered to hell and back), but why Cave kept working with low resolutions, how do you think? As for "no one wanting to do lower-rez on art side", I beg to differ. Do you think we would get pixel art masterpieces such as this and that if the artists had to work with high resolutions?8 1/2 wrote:No one likely really WANTS to do lower-rez on the art side, and for a company like Vanillaware it would seem like terribly diminishing returns to focus on lower quality art as a cost-saving measure when that's the key selling feature of their titles. More likely there is much shovelware on the Wii because Wii is such a popular console (certainly not the other way round). The most popular platform gets the most shovelware; it's always the same.8 1/2 wrote:I would suspect that releasing on the Wii was likely driven by the low cost to get licensed by Nintendo these days. Man, those translators are, like, one of the best things about modern technology. It's the year 2010, now where are flying cars and space colonies? Re: [JP 360] Deathsmiles II X coming on May 27, Preorders open!
You could never get something like Chicken Shoot, or Elf Bowling approved for the PS3 or the 360. Nintendo is WAY more lax on this sort of stuff. It's not like these companies don't want their software on other consoles, it's that Sony and MS don't allow it. It hasn't always been that way, but in recent years Nintendo has opened the gates to pretty much any piece of shit you can get to boot.Obiwanshinobi wrote:More likely there is much shovelware on the Wii because Wii is such a popular console (certainly not the other way round). I used to work in Standards QA before I got into design, and I promise you that MS and Sony have much more extensive criteria you have to meet to get a piece of software approved for licensing.

Ok, I'm about to order this but just need confirmation that the DLC will be included with the regular edition like the LE edition and that the LE edition only has the soundtrack cd as an extra? If the DLC other sountrack install for game will be included with the regular edition, I'll just go with the regular one.

If this is anything like their previous releases, only the first x number of copies of the regular edition will include the DLC code, and these copies may or may not have been presold out months ago. If you -have- to have the DLC code, ordering the limited edition greatly increases your chances.

So this is supposed to be out in 2-3 days. Holy crap.
My lolicon feels excite, indeed.
Just going to quickly remind people about the pre-order updates thread. I haven't heard anything about the game shipping yet (a little surprising actually, I would have thought we'd have an update by now), but when I do I'll post it there.

I've been playing a bit of DS1 in preparation. Kind of forgot how much fun the series is. Is it wrong to find a shmup relaxing?
I just can't be bothered to care about scoring well in the first game since my prime motivator for doing so in most games is to reach the extend threshholds. I haven't read too much yet, but I do hope that the new game's system has more depth.
