I definitely wouldn't mind seeing a team win that has never won before.

I always support my homecountries USA and Germany during the WC, but USA is way more fun to root for, as they don't have anything to loose.
They got to the quarter finals in 2002 and lost to Germany who took it. I agree, they're underrated, but my whole joke was mainly pointing out the obvious: that we are the bastard step-child in the sport, no doubt. I mean, not one of our single matches in the US has broken out into an riot. What the fuck?
USA has an appalling record of scoring in world cups.
They got to the quarter finals in 2002 and lost to Germany who took it. In 2006, knocked out by Italy, if I'm not mistaken, who also won. Seeing a pattern here?
It was Brazil who won in 2002. They beat Germany in the finals.

I voted for Brazil, but as long as it's not France or Argentina, it's fine.

France shouldn't have qualified, as their match against Ireland was ridiculous.
Argentina only qualified on their last game, and Maradona said horrible things on TV after that, basically told everyone else to go fuck themselves.

I really want to watch a Brazil x Spain final, as that would be awesome.

just to add a voice to this, i'm not even concerned about the Henry thing - did what he had to do to get France through, referees didn't spot it *shrug*

It was the whole rule change prior to the playoffs (i.e. making it seeded based on FIFA rankings) that stunk the whole of the footballing world up. After bad (France) and near disaster (Portugal) , it was clear that Blatter and Platini didn't want the horror scenario of these two being pulled out of the bag together. The rules were left ambiguous right down to the last minute and it seems obvious it was a fiddle. I just cannot for the life of me understand how they got away with making what is supposed to be a random draw for the plucky second placed finishers a seeded event - basically this just means if you are high up the FIFA ranks then they'll bend over for you to have a second chance if you manage to fuck up your qualifying group. Finishing second was a great achievement for some of the lower teams, but an absolute disaster for France and Portugal.

Would have been brilliant for Ireland to have done the French - simply to give FIFA, Blatter and Platini the bird.

Yes, the counter argument is "well, you want the big teams there, don't you?" - yes, on merit. If we are going to go with the "Got to have the big teams" then why bother with qualification at all? Just throw out a couple of places to the minnow teams and have Brazil, Germany, Italy, etc... every year. translation: fucking YAAAAWN.

This whole farce is counter to the spirit of football and ESPECIALLY to the spirit of the World Cup (teams who qualify and get a shot, teams that no one has seen before shocking a big nation (Cameroon v Argentina, S Korea v Italy, etc) and I don't know any real football fans who were cheering for the French, not because it was "The French" but because of what was obviously a complete fiddle - and that seems to include a large cross section of the French!

The Henry incident didn't help things either, but also the calls for Ireland to be given a place or the match to be replayed were also ludicrous - the bulk of the protest should have been before a ball was even kicked in the playoffs. But it wasn't so...

Also- France's group for qualification ?

Serbia, Austria, Lithuania, Romania and the Faroe Islands

If you are a world power and you aren't finishing top of that group, there is something desperately wrong. (No disrespect to Serbia who are a handly team, but France should have been looking at that group with a big smile on their faces)

Yeah. In 12 years, everyone will call it Soccer.
We are the true winners by default everytime as we invented it surely? Thank you for embracing our culture. We hope you all enjoy World Cup 2010.
Actually no. Since all the powerful people of what you allegedly call England are the ones who had the cultural impact and decision making power, and were indeed Americans in spirit long before defecting and creating what is known as the land of the free, the US gets all credit for creating the sport. And, by my watch England got the shit kicked out of them at some point the only two tournaments I've watched. I guess it really depends on how you define "winner". If you define it as, "the person or team who scores the most points, thus winning the game" like the dictionary, and also the rest of the planet, then no, they are not winners every time. They also have some of the most disgusting bar food on the planet so they never truly win. Thanks.

well, on paper we have just a good a chance of getting through our half of the draw, but that's always been England's problem.... "on paper..."

we need to start producing - we also need to stop worrying about other teams and let them worry about us. I'm sure none of the teams in the tournament will relish playing us. Wish the Press would get behind the team at least rather than trying to run the team as they always do. Don't get me started on Tory jizzrag The Daily Mail - thanks for torpedoing the 2018 bid, dickheads!

'Yeah. In 12 years, everyone will call it Soccer.'

Everyone will call it Soccer again you mean? The English coined this nickname for Football but we and the majority of the World don't tend to say it over Football. The second F in FIFA stands for Football with that one, that's official.

Hardly. The fact is that England invented Football. We also invented your Baseball, so you can thank us for that later. We also composed the tune for your National Anthem and Amazing Grace so suck on that dude. Furthermore, only a right penis would go down the pub of a night and eat as well as drink. It's not the done thing old chap. If you don't believe me, ask your George Washington via a weegie board, he was English too! LOL. Does your lot worship all traitors such as Lee Harvey Oswald the same way as you do the former traitor just out of interest? A very strange place with a very strange 'culture.'

Back on topic. Argentina has my money to win it as they have the most exciting team on the Planet and the best/most experienced, aggressive manager in the World.

Japjac's right, you hardly ever see people going to the pub to eat. It's more popular to get piss drunk and talk about the lack of sunshine and how all other countries stole their ideas.

How the fuck would someone who's talked about being illiterate in his residing country the last 10 years know what the done thing is across the world? Top secret technology in your neck of the woods. Oh... "South West Tokyo"... Talking about the "not done thing." I guess that's another English coined phrase I should be thankful for. Whenever I hear it from the 2nd person which statistically should happen in about 11 years, I'll know he got it from you. Cool.

Not talking about Football in this thread is just not Cricket with that one.

Sure it does. You're a nazi, I rape and pillage and JAPJAC eats disgusting food while he tries to screw the ugliest women known to man. National stereotypes are awesome.

Could we please talk football again? I don't think there is any need for another JAPJAC thread. I can't believe that FIFA elected Martin Hansson as referee again. That man have made so many errors that he needs a complete overhaul of his internal rom set.

I disagree strangely - there's been a few games where he was good, had a few stinkers. Given the standards across the board, i don't think his inclusion is that much of a surprise.

Instead of the 3 lions they should be called the 3 headless chickens.

I bet England concede the most horrendous goal of the tournament. You read it here first.
i will go one further and tell you how it happens!

With England 1-0 down to the US from an early goal from a corner, England have been pushing forward for the most of the game but the fit and surprisingly well organised US team ride there luck for the majority of the match and are just about protecting their lead. With the English fans screaming on with 12 minutes to go, Gerrard is preasured in midfield by Dempsey - Gerrard passes all the way back to Rio Ferdiand ,with England playing a high line looking to pressure that important equaliser in. Dempsey , however, continues running on past Gerrard to challenge for the ball and as the ball gets to Ferdinand he half stands on the ball when trying to control it, he stumbles allowing Dempsey to run in , round the keeper and take a 2-0 lead.

Rooney scores a late header, but the US hang on. The press go nuts.

headlines : Yanks very much, Uncle Sham-bles, Star Spangled Spanner, Untidied State,

(well, maybe not that exact scenario of course but i bet as part of conceding the most horrendous goal that Rio is involved heavily in it)
