Ive finally popped my cherry.
although I caught the shmup bug last June ive never actually properlly played a Cave shmup due to my old pc not liking Mame (or anything else other then 8/16bits and PS1) Now ive got a new PC i can emulate the more recent shmups like RSG, Mars matrix etc and above all gen 1 Cave on Mame. And after playing DDP and Guwange all i can say is wow
. Up till now the shmups ild play were 8/16bit cosole shmups and doujins. Now im not saying those shmups wernt bad or anything on the contary, retro and doujin shmups are a lot of fun but tbh they pale in comparison to ddp and guwange.

Re: Ive finally popped my cherry.
Same thing happened to me about 5-6 years ago. Got mame on my xbox and happened upon DDP. Up until then I'd been playing a lot of Strikers 1945 and Hotdog Storm... That all changed.
Good thing: you've a ton of great games ahead.
Bad thing: some of the games you loved might not shine so bright.

I'm honestly a struggling with what's more surprising; the old machine's probable lifespan or the lack of cave playing
[getting into the time machine...] Pretty sure that a 700mhz machine which could run ps1 emu should have run mame?... ha fun times; that was 3ds max 3, macromedia flash 4, hl/cs and diablo 2 machine I think...?
Haha - either way - enjoy the new fun!
... damn ... I'm going to be playing some old[ish] pc games now this weekend...

I understand Guwange, but (expanding the metaphor) DDP - nymphomaniac? Really? Try Dangun Feveron and Dragon Blaze - now THAT's what I call nymphomaniac. But then again, I'm strangely immune to (D)DP's alleged charms.

Strange indeed... I had a fairly modest PC when I first got into shmups (Penitum III 667 MHz, 128 MB RAM, shitty integrated video), and it could handle Cave games just fine. I had to disable sound to get Raizing games to run smoothly, though.

Re: Ive finally popped my cherry.
maybe it was just my pc or i was doing the something wrong as i didnt spend too long messing around with it. And tbh im very much satisfied playing doujins or pre cave shmups. Anyway i had the impression that the later games would be laggy or dont get the best expierence. so it wasnt until i got this pc and the new lagless versions of mame that i was happy to actually play the games properlly.
Also i like to play one or two games at a time and not play anything else just incase i lose the enthusiasm to play the game im already playing. Atm im halfway thru fallout 3 and now that ive played a handfull of mame games ill probably play it for a couple of days and shelve it to play ddp or guwange and due to getting so far into the game F3 wont get play for atleast 3 years if ever.
And yes it is along time to of not played ddp ect (i could of played it on the ps1) but something good is best savoured ya know. Like what point durango76 made if you start to feed your cat of prime cuts of salmon and chicken itll refuse the cheap catfood youve been feeding it for the past 5 years.

hehe that cat almost did starve. a cat i had as a kid was enticed away by a old neighbor who fed her better food that i was eating. When the old women died we tried to get her to come back but she wouldnt touch any kind of catfood we gave her. The cat nearlly starved untill the local owner of a family owned fireplace makers took her in as a ratter. i bet it cost him a bit to keep her though.gray117 wrote:Nah ... games you 'love' aren't just games you like... And about not bothering with arcade shmups the original plan was to just stick to doujin and 8/16 bit for 3 or 4 months untill i got 360 but things didnt go to plan and i stuck with what i normally played for longer including the two taito legends packs which the games wernt good enough to bother tate the single monitor i had. Athough after a couple of games yesterday that fucker was stright on its side. lol
anyway you guys might think im wierd or some kind of sadomasocist but give me a day or two and ill come back with a post of how im been intelecktual and smaarta then everyione as doujin is arthouse or some other horseshit

Glad you're having fun with them.
Of the Cave I've played, my feelings are mixed, but there's probably a Cave game for everyone, that's for sure. Personally I'd take a good Star Soldier over most of the Cave games, but I admit Dangun Feveron is a game I could spend a significant amount of time in if given the chance.

Why thank you and yes i amneist wrote:Glad you're having fun with them.
Out of the 2 games im finding my head turning alot more towards Guwange rather then DDP and thats to do with Guwange having the wow factor with allot more eye candy and unique gameplay compared to DDP. Plus many of the doujins ive played copy allot from DDP. But i do know that DDP will provide me more challenge in the long run because of the 2nd loop.captpain wrote:That's fucking stupid, honestly.Obiwanshinobi wrote:I understand Guwange, but (expanding the metaphor) DDP - nymphomaniac? As for the other cave games on mame i havnt played em yet and dont plan to for a while untill ive spent some time with what im playing atm.

You should try out Dangun Feveron or it's International version counterpart, Fever SOS on Mame/Mame32 as it's a blazing fast shmup...definitely Cave's fastest arcade shmup title ever released in terms of sheer speed of the player's fightercraft. You'll dig them 1970's disco BGM tunes playing in the background.
Or you could try your hand at Cave's classic Uo Poko puzzler, a break from them arcade shmups indeed. The second and last Cave arcade puzzler is an SH-3 powered PCB release only and would thus require a proper candy cab or supergun to play Mushihime-tama.

Wow, just now getting to play older Cave games. That's like drinking off brand cola and then finally trying Coke. You should try out ESP Ra. De. if you like sporadic patterns.

yea i looking forward to playing esp.ra.de in the next batch of new shooters ill play. i hear its the easiest of all caves games to get a 1cc.Marurun wrote:Wow, just now getting to play older Cave games. Although caves great and all they arnt everything especially for someone whole likes to play for a 1CC, Something like DDP will take a hell of a lot longer to beat then BWR or Exceed 3rd Black Package. Doujins while not as good as an AAA arcade shmup are good for someone who doesnt yet want to commit to them and only wants to spend a 2 -3 weeks on a single game. So anyone who thought they had seen the last of me pestering newcommers to play doujins are gonna have to put up with me for abit longer

I don't know where you heard that, I personally consider it one of Cave's harder games. Maybe you're thinking of Galuda?TrevHead (TVR) wrote:yea i looking forward to playing esp.ra.de in the next batch of new shooters ill play. i hear its the easiest of all caves games to get a 1cc.Marurun wrote:Wow, just now getting to play older Cave games. I deffo read it correct as EspRaDe 2 or 3 days ago. It might of been off you tube and if so thatll explain it
while were on the topic of the difficulty of cave games, anyone cave to tell which are the easiest and hardest of cave? im guessing that all the DDPs will be the harder of caves with DOJ and DOJ BL been the hardest, but as to the more easier games i havnt a clue. (i would guess scoring and 1cc will make different difficulties)

Deathsmiles is by far the easiest as long as you don't count stuff like novice mode in 360 version of Espgaluda II. DOJ being the hardest, closely followed by Espgaluda II. But I think this question have been asked and answered like a million times

DDP, Galuda, and maybe Ibara Arrange are probably the easiest Cave games I've played, although they are by no means easy games.
DOJ is by far the hardest I've played. Mushi's Ultra Mode is probably harder though, if you want to count that. Dangun Feveron and Donpachi are also ridiculously tough for me, but some people are better at fast old-school shmups than more recent bullet-hell.

Is DonPachi considered fast? Didn't seem particulary fast to me (haven't played past Stage 2's last boss, though; I was doing fine, but just couldn't be bothered replaying these 2 stages again as they were long and not terribly exciting). I know Cave games have got fast shots either (even DDP's first level sports some of these), but generally I associate Cave with majestic myriads of confetti descending slowly, brushing gently my ship's tiny hitbox as I am supposed to do... things for the score. You know, things.kengou wrote:Dangun Feveron and Donpachi are also ridiculously tough for me, but some people are better at fast old-school shmups than more recent bullet-hell.
Except for Dangun Feveron. Holy Discotheque, what a game... Even the scoring thing, if not self-explanatory, makes sense to me and feels good. It doesn't even feel like a shooter, but I don't care anymore, that's how delightful this game is.
P.S. To be fair, though, some doujin shmmups I played gave me even more of this "fighting against confetti" feel. It's difficult to explain. Seems like so called "bullet hell", as impressive as it looks, isn't what I want from a shooty game.

That explains it. Stages 1 and 2 are some of the easiest stages in any Cave game - hell, maybe any shmup at all. 3 is fairly easy too but not unreasonably so. From stage 4 onward, the game is pure HELL. It's an unbelievable difficulty spike.Obiwanshinobi wrote: Is DonPachi considered fast? Maybe it deserves a separate topic, but I think Gate of Thunder gets the "easy two first levels" award (but in Gate of Thunder continuing, at least for training purposes, makes sense - allows you to avoid raplaying the lot over and over again - whereas in DP continuing would be just credit feeding).kengou wrote:Stages 1 and 2 are some of the easiest stages in any Cave game - hell, maybe any shmup at all.

That is unless i did it on top of DDP cabinet or space invaders cocktail which i didnt (unfortunatly)
If i ever could go back i time and have a choice of machines it would have to be a SF2 champian edition, just because of all the time i spent on one at my local arcades as a kid.

Seriously though, I'd say there are many games on both Taito Legends that are better than DDP and goowangs and RSG for that matter. Fight the hype man, you don't wanna be the shmups equivalent of those games journalist tards out there going on about Ikaruga all day.
