World Reborn (2D Shooter) for GBA Released- As Free Download
Because there was no chance for a commercial release, the programmers have kindly released the rom:
http://www.workingdesignsmb.com/forums/ ... .php?t=342
You'll need either a flash card or an emulator to play.
EDIT: Warning, extreme Euro-shmupness. Energy bar, weak weapons, simple patterns, enemies don't flash when hit. Feels antiquated and amateurish.

Aye, but playable shit for those of us who grew up with the Amiga and/or are in it more for the fun than the score/1cc's.P_HAT wrote:~this game is shitNuke wrote:Eh, it's alright for an Euroshmup.
Trek trough the Galaxy on silver wings and play football online.
Yeah, it's not that bad, and the weapons do get stronger as you gain more experience points. Too bad there's no way change your ship's speed (slow down).Nuke wrote:Aye, but playable shit for those of us who grew up with the Amiga and/or are in it more for the fun than the score/1cc's.P_HAT wrote:~this game is shitNuke wrote:Eh, it's alright for an Euroshmup.
Yeah. Holy crap is this bad!
The fire rate of your ship takes a dump whenever you get any sort of powerup. Twin shot? Reduced fire rate. Add a homing missile on top of that? Three shots a second, if that. You only get to use one shot select item at a time, and if you CAN add something to it (I've only found the add-on shot type, which wasn't marked as an add-on or anything of the sort so I guess you have to grab everything lol) it just makes the main shot slower.
Health powerups all over the place...the game started to look like it was gonna get hard in the second level but shat those + health powerups all over. Then, when I took the "hard" route across some plains, the game got even easier.
Boss designs are horrible...the first boss (in the second level) is the anemic offspring of a core and a weather satellite. The second boss I played (at the plains) is even worse, as it only fires attacks up, down, left and right - but I almost instantly took out the left-facing attack with a homing missile. It then flew around the screen uselessly for a few seconds without doing any damage.
Health powerups, again...you get 30 points for these, no matter what level your health is at (unless you're dead, I suppose; I haven't been dead but I don't think you can pick up health when you're like that).
Speaking of which, what's with the ultra-conservative score counter? It's like they were afraid of breaking the GBA with their awesome bullet count and number of enemies onscreen. There actually are some poorly-placed transparency effects here and there; for example flying behind a tree in the plains = transparency (apparently tree limbs are transparent, didn't you know).
So yeah, this game manages to be even worse than Sigma Star Saga. That takes some doing, I gotta hand it to them.

They were trying to get this published as a commercial game. I would hope any other publisher that looked at it would have said, 'not good enough!'.ForceDevice wrote:It's not THAT bad, really... for an indie game
I don't think so :3ForceDevice wrote:Would you play a shmup with longer cutscenes than stages? Yes, you would. :3
Theoretically speaking: Maybe if each stage was full of such incredible awesome, and you weren't forced to re-watch them repeatedly on a mission death...but the crappy sub-Genesis-era bad portraits in little boxes doesn't cut it for "cutscenes" with this title. I haven't died, though, so:
woowoo progress

...I actually liked that game.Ed Oscuro wrote:So yeah, this game manages to be even worse than Sigma Star Saga. That takes some doing, I gotta hand it to them.
Because CE is better than all of them.1.8.0-beta 3 has been out for aaaages, man, why you still usin' 1.7.4?Turrican wrote:tested on visualboy advance 1.7.4

Darn, the little intro was great-- the way the story was presented conjured up memories of Turrican. Even the faux-anime portraits have a certain pitiful charm.
The game itself though; blargh. I didn't play for long (I also suffer with vba 1.7.4) but I could pick out a lot of unfinished sprites with lots of over-dithering to boot. It felt like the team spent more time with the intro than the game itself.
I have to say I like the music quite a bit. Yeah, it's generic but it still trumps the actual gameplay.
It seems like it was released to the public as a learning tool. So I'm sure it'll be helpful to some people-- maybe people learning to code for gba or something.

Erm... I'm sure you noticed Udderdude's second quote was from my sig, and not directed to the GBA game on topic?Ed Oscuro wrote:Theoretically speaking: Maybe if each stage was full of such incredible awesome, and you weren't forced to re-watch them repeatedly on a mission death...but the crappy sub-Genesis-era bad portraits in little boxes doesn't cut it for "cutscenes" with this title. And speaking of cutscenes, I need to change my sig. The game won't have cutscenes anymore, I just realized a) they take too much work to make and b) it'd take FOREVER to release the game if I were to insist on them.
So Udderdude, now you have no reasons not to play it. :3

Ah, heh heh. No you didn't miss any source code or anything. I sorta misspoke. It just seemed like the game was released publicly to show how far a small company can go. Also, I thought the person mentioned something about eventually releasing development documents to "help out any budding designers out there."

Did the game creators of GBA World Reborn even have a game tester group play it over & over to give it some much needed tweaks & improvements? And if so, the gameplay and game mechanics would've been better than this beta version of WR that does exist. Constructive feedback is crucial when it comes to making such games nowdays.
It doesn't seem like an in-house beta tester team was used, period...I could be wrong though.
The kick-ass doujin GBA release of Super Star Shooter Advance is light-years better in the graphics and gameplay departments (if borrowing heavily from the classic PCE shmup of Super Star Soldier/Soldier Blade's Caravan Stage)...I'd pay some good $$$ for it if it was an officially released GBA cartridge. ^_~
