Well, if you find GM hard, I'm going to assume anything C++ based is out of question.

Nice alternative is Blitzmax. Easy, fast, BASIC-like language, if you ever used any 8bit computer you'll be right at home. I made a simple module for it (2nd post) that handles 2D collision detection and some other things that otherwise require some math, so you don't need to worry about that part at least.
