More games on the Sonic Gems Collection

Post by theevilfunkster »

According to Gamespot (and I'm sure many other places) the Japanese Sonic Gems Collection will include four games as bonuses: Streets of Rage, Streets of Rage II, Streets of Rage III, and Bonanza Brothers.

All 3 Streets of Rages, SWEEEET!!! :D :D

It doesn't say wether they will be on the PAL or US versions but I'm sure they will be.

Wow. That is sweet! Bonanza Bros too! Bonanza Bros is a very fun game. I have the PS2 collection version and I love it.

Nice. I highly doubt this is gonna happen, but maybe they can give us an unedited, yet translated version of BK3 on the American release.

Sweet, I need to get Streets of Rage 2 and 3. This won't stop me from getting proper versions, but this might tide me over until I get around to buying the Genesis versions. Hope this comes stateside.

And maybe for good measure they'll throw in the bonus games from the Mega Collection Plus for the GameCube version.

That also wouldn't sell as well.

What're going to be ALL the games on it?

I'm hyped for the SoR games. My family was always a fan of them.
The radio said, "No, John. You are the demons."
And then, John was a zombie.

When I was a kid, I like SOR3 more than SOR2. Maybe because of the kangaroo, yea.

It seems the US version won't include include the Strets of Rage trilogy or Bonanza Brothers but will have Vectorman and Vectorman 2 instead.

Apparently it's because they would have to change the games rating. Seems pretty lame though.

Considering I vastly prefer the Vectorman games, I'm happy.

Guess you'll have to import if you want the SoR games and the original soundtrack for Sonic CD. Sega of America and Namco Hometek are in a constant war to become the worst publishers on earth.

Bah, lame. Anyway, why would Bonanza Brothers change the rating? They were just pretending to steal stuff so that they could improve security, remember?

this is a pathetic excuse, no doubt. They must have suddenly realized that they could sell the SoR trilogy in any form (GBA cart, Cube disc, PSP game, you mention it) and it would sell as stand-alone product.

Still... somewhat it makes sense. If SoR games were included, it would have been a weird case of extra games more worthy than the main dish.

Err, I hope Europe doesn't have the same US age ratings... Come on, Germany, don't screw it up for all of us once again :?

Eh, I can believe it. It's not like Sega took them out just for the express purpose of pissing off Americans, laughing a Snidely Whiplash laugh. It most likely would have bumped the rating up to Teen, which would kill a Sonic collection.

This is so wrong

Someone tell Sega there's this new thing called an E 10+ rating.

that, or the rating could just read "E-T" like the Sega Smash Pack for Dreamcast.

Wasn't Sonic Mega Collection Plus rated E even though it had Comix Zone?

No Streets of Rage games? Ehh....not interested, nor am I really all that interested to import it. Don't much care for Sonic CD, Sonic Fighters is meh... really it's only worth picking up for the Vectorman games, but you can probably find those cheaper locally than it'd cost to buy the mega collection.

I'll wait to pick this up when it's in the 75% off bin.

I think replacing four games with two is a bit unfair. Why not port Wonderboy in Monster Land, Alex Kid in Miracle World, or another SMS game? Why not the Sonic SMS games as well as the GG ones? It's not like the SMS is hard to emulate. Most GG emulators also emulate SMS, so there is no reason why they shouldn't be in there. Also, there's that Genesis Alex Kidd game and Wonder Boy in Monster World Genesis (which is often called Monster Land by mistake). Why not put those in the collection?

Are you sure that Sonic's appeal is pre-teen? After all, we're discussing on this forum and I can see we're definitely "old" sega fans. Why a kid would want to buy a collection of sonic games?

They're missing their target I think.

And how old were all of us when we first got into Sonic?

Sonic is a game for everyone. It always has been, and slapping a teen rating on a collection of Sonic games is going to cut out a huge portion of the people who would be interested in this, but Streets of Rage wouldn't make up the difference.

You're smart enough to know that it doesn't work necessarily that way. I hate to say this, because it is not true for me, but for the majority of gamers out there games are like fish... they get rotten fast. This applies to kids and young casual gamers as well.

Now, don't eat my face, I perfectly know that Sonic is aged quite well and provides hours of genuine fun. But somehow, I still believe the majority of Sonic Mega Collection buyers were the same (or closer to) Midway arcade Treasures buyers, not Pokemon / Yu gi Oh buyers.

But, regardless of this... the problem stays at the roots. Japanese audience doesn't see offensive to find a street brawler into a Sonic package, US audience may think so. I think after hearing this news, any goodwilling american should ask for a change in rating criteria...

But I already know it's an hopeless battle. My hopes are that Sega of Europe will reconsider.

The Pokemon / Yu-Gi-Oh kids might care about certain things when they buy games, but graphics aren't among them. And the first MAT was rated T, while the second was M, so I'm not surprised that the audience was different. :P

I think Streets of Rage and Vectorman are both boring, monotonous games, but I'd take the latter over the former.

Fair enough, but I never mentioned graphics. I don't think it's about graphics... I just think, that a kid these days is not, huh, bombed with Sonic tv spots, Sonic cereals, Sonic gadgets and such. I don't know there in the US, but here the whole Sonic affair is pretty much dead. IF a guy does recognize the name, you can tell he is not a ten years old.

Yes, I think in the end you are right. There's no point to debate this if we don't have actual sales evidence. But yeah, Sega is probably right to market such a collection for younger audience. Even if it may not reach that kind of target (as I'm afraid, see above posts), there's no denial that it SHOULD. I'd love to see kids loving the hedgehog and such.
