Do you just play shooters ?
Re: Do you just play shooters ?
normally I put in about half/half shmups and beatmaniaIIDX on the weekends, the only times I really get to play. My 360 has been on a tated crt monitor for months as there just hasn't been much incentive for me to hook it back into the TV. futari and galudaII could keep me busy for the rest of the year, let alone Ketsui coming around the corner.
Other than that snuggling up in bed with a DS playing a random VN or RPG is always nice way to relax with some non skill-based games.

Almost nothing but STGs here.
Other than that, RPGs [read: Pokemon and FF], FPSes [read: Halo 1 online and the Marathon trilogy], and 2D fighters [read: KOF or Street Fighter, sometimes Guilty Gear], but for the most part, I am a total shmupper.

Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.
Re: Do you just play shooters ?
At home I play shmups with about 40-70% of my free time. The other time is spent either playing TF2 for a few minutes, or listening to music (Yay! Headphones!) while reading various things I find on the internet. I also take the train to school everyday, and it's a tedious journey every weekday, mainly because my ATH-A700s (My headphones, if you haven't already guessed) are too big to carry with me. So during the train rides, I typically play games like Phoenix Wright or Ketsui Death Label.

Re: Do you just play shooters ?
A year ago i would either play single player fps, western rpgs and Eve online a funbuy very time consuming mmo and the occational rts like total war or homeworld.
Then my old PCs fan fell (/ melted) off the graphiocs cards so for a short time i was unable to play anything 3D, which tbh is the best thing that ever happend in my gaming life since it allowed me to descover emulators and retro gaming. Then after watching Ite 7s Best doujin shmups vid i descovered the world of shmups and this place. (ite7 i luv u man for making that video)
Since then i just play retro/ indie which is usually either platformers or shmups. Playing thru 1 or 2 games at a time. This past week i replaced my dead pc, and so to test the specs i installed bioshock and have been playing that the past week. This is the first time ive played a big budget modern game the past year. I have been playing edens aegis a bullet hell aswell.
Problem is that im having to quit early and play bioshock or something non bullet helly, due to after 10 minutes of playing Aegis my eyes start straining and loosing focus when dodging bullet mazes. Although i might need my eyes testing ive been using the new 23" widesceen LCD, so im gonna swap back to my old 19" CRT that i packed away since my eyes are abit better with it. Funny thing is that its just bullet hell that knackers up my eyes with certain bullet types worse then others. Hehe i know i should get a eye test but since my eye sight is fine with everthing else it would be odd having a set of specs just for bullet hell lol

Re: Do you just play shooters ?
I tend to play shmups most often, but that's probably because once I beat most of my other games, I just tend to take a LONG break from them(especially newer games). Shmups I just pop on, play, and turn off when I feel like it.
I love lots of 2D games. Platformers and action adventure games are pretty high on that list.
3rd person action games are probably my favorite of the 3D type games(Ninja Gaiden, God Of War, DMC), because of the heavy emphasis on action. Any third person 3D game is of interest to me, like Metal Gear, Resident Evil, and stuff like that. Can't get into FPS for anything, although I do remember liking the first Perfect Dark.
And then I like JRPGs that don't have a zillion hours worth of cinemas. So, almost no new ones except for Dragon Quest VIII. I enjoy Strat RPGS like Disgaea and FFT.
I'll mess around with some fighters, puzzle games, light gun games, and racers. But even though I like them, I tend to not play them much at all, even if I think they're great.

Re: Do you just play shooters ?
The past few years I've been exclusively playing shmups. I have a nice collection of non-shmup games too, but they are packed away in my closet and only shmups are readily accessible. I used to love JRPGs, Action Adventure, Hack and Slash, and Fighting games, but as I get older I'm looking for something easier to pick up and play for 30min-1hr at a time. There are some current gen niche games I'd like to eventually try, but not worth buying a console for at this point in time (Murasama, Sin and Punishment 2, The Last Guardian, Last Window, etc).
There were plenty of great non-shmup games last gen (God Hand, Zoe2, Shadow of the Colossus, GUNVALKYRIE, Panzer Orta, Viewtiful Joe, etc), but I'm not drawn to much this gen has to offer at all. I do occasionally bust out some timeless 16-bit titles though for nostalgic purposes.

Re: Do you just play shooters ?
Aye, my tastes have been narrowing for years (in a good way, out of passion rather than ignorance), and this genre has been my favourite since childhood. I still follow gaming generally, but I increasingly find that all I ever want to play are shooters, older games and cheap "casual" indie games that usually end up being precisely eighty-four million times more enduring than full retail ones. I feel an unshakeable ennui towards everything that's going on in terms of Big Fucking Life-Changing Blockbusters, certainly...

Re: Do you just play shooters ?
I have played about every genre out there and just could never find some middle ground for racers, sports, rhythm, rts games. Any other genre if I can find some aspect that interests me (gimmick, scoring feature, customization, story) I will probably give it a try.
That said, outside co-op/competitive games (fighting games, select fps, mmorpgs (yes I said it), etc) with friends, shmups, and nostalgia (rockman 10); I'm finding gaming to be far less fulfilling than it once was a few years back.

Re: Do you just play shooters ?
Ive been playing all kinds of games since I started with NES, then competed in fighting games etc
Now I am just tired of all shallow FPS games (And I work as a FPS games game developer, huh??)
I have always had a love for shooters since the first Gradius and now the CAVE games brings me hapiness with their deep scoring systems and amazing bullet patterns.
I am also feeling old and tired of loading times so right now I am buying old cartridge systems, like the Neo Geo AES. (I am finally gonna finish Last Resort!)
My next step is a CAVE PCB.

After playing FFXIII for 15(!)min. i ended up feeding my 360 drive with Espgaluda II and got hooked for 2 hours

I think rewarding risky play with high scores is important. [Toshiaki Tomizawa]
Re: Do you just play shooters ?
I usually take turns. I tend get into the groove of only playing one shmup (or a skill-based game of other genre) at a time until I've reached whatever goal I had in mind for it. After I've reached that goal I like to relax for a while with something more casual until another skill-based game grabs me. That way I remind myself why I enjoy shmups so much...that instead of the character that's getting stronger in the game, it's myself.
Now I'm mixing it up a bit by playing both. Yesterday I first played Assassin's Creed II for less than an hour and then Outrun Online Arcade (multiplayer and time attack) for two hours straight.

No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Re: Do you just play shooters ?
I used to play PC games a lot but that's pretty much stopped now. I can get into some new console games but mostly only if it's something I can finish pretty quickly. I'm finding I just don't have the patience for RPG's anymore. I've got a back catalog of games I've barely scratched the surface on. Shmups I kind of play in phases of focusing on one for a few weeks and then taking a break. The majority of what I play are fighting games and shmups now though.
Re: Do you just play shooters ?
I've been playing shoot'em ups since 1979/80. In the arcades in the 80s I played both shooters, 2D platformers & Volfied. Since 1992 I've only played shoot'em ups in the arcade because the 2D platformers had gone, (apart from Metal Slug).
I naturally gravitate towards 2D shooters, so errr...yeah - 31 years shooting in arcades and counting...

Re: Do you just play shooters ?
Probably 90% of everything I play are shmups.
Simply don't have enough time to play too many other types of games, wish I had, but really have to devote the time I do have to the things I like the most.

Re: Do you just play shooters ?
I wouldn't say I only play shmups, but I sure do play a lot of them! I play quite a lot of platformers as well.
Lately I've been a few FPS games here and there online like Tremulous and Urban Terror.
Oh, I should also mention Tetris. I've been a little tetris'd out though, lately but from about April to October I would play Tetris about an hour a day.

Re: Do you just play shooters ?
Love shmups for thier purity but I still need my fix of Bayonetta, FF13, God of War 3, Killzone 2, MGS, etc.
Re: Do you just play shooters ?
I play fighting games more than anything, and play SF4 competitively. I recently got into shmups because a local arcade had Mushihama Futari 1.5 and I got to the 3rd level with one quarter when I first played and was hooked. Then I got Espgaluda for PS2 and I was hooked again.
So as a hardcore fighting game player, I play shmups probably 30% of the time. I still play some COD and Stepmania, and one of the best games ive played recently was Deadspace. Ill pretty much play any game thats a challenge, and shooters are a big change of pace for me.

Re: Do you just play shooters ?
I'm a little all over the place. I started out with Mario Bros. on NES when I was 5 or so and played pretty much anything I could. Once I got a copy of Gradius, I started to seek out shooters as often as possible (pre-interwebs). I played lots of Dragon Warrior and the early Final Fantasy titles, so I have a soft spot for old school JRPGs. Once I got a Dreamcast, I developed a real preference for shmups -- and Resident Evil. Nowadays I alternate between shmups and FPS/action titles like TF2, MW2, Dead Space, etc. And I'll go through a JRPG every now and then. I generally don't have a ton of time at the end of the day thanks to my job and reading 4FUN, but I plug into mame for a bit and/or settle in to some Nintendo DS action every so often.

Re: Do you just play shooters ?
Shooter take up as little as 2-5% of my gaming time. I love playing them but I tend to only play one or maybe 2 games over a very long period of time, and then I will only occasionally throw them in the console.
Most of the time I would rather play RPGs.

), with puzzle games a close second and fighting games anytime i can get people to play with....
i also play a LOT of neo drift out....and similar titles
never had consoles growing up, so my gaming was done in arcades....
never been into consoles other than for arcade game ports....
when your apartment is full of cabs, you feel kinda silly sitting and playing a game on your tv

Re: Do you just play shooters ?
I don't play only shooters, though they probably make up a good 3/4 of what I spend my gaming time on. I also play fighting games (okay, Super Turbo and Mark of the Wolves) a lot and other arcade style games like Strider and Metal Slug. It's an exception when I'm attracted to a "modern" adventure or action game, and when that's the case it's usually because a friend introduces it to me through co-op. I find it harder and harder to care about new releases because they're so time consuming and usually contain too much (poorly done) exposition/filler. Arcade games don't dick around.

Re: Do you just play shooters ?
I've spent most of my gaming time on real time strategy games (Starcraft), then FPS and STG. I also enjoy all other genres but don't give them a lot of time cause I like to do other stuff than games too ^_^

Re: Do you just play shooters ?
I probably spend 1/3 of my gaming on shmups, 1/3 on fighters and 1/3 on the rest (mostly RPG/action/adventure).
In shooters I compete against myself and in fighters I compete against others, so sometimes I just need to relax with some RPG-grinding.

Re: Do you just play shooters ?
Bomberman > STG > RPGs (w/j) =/= visual novels > FPS (TF2 only) > random stuff on XBLA/PSN if it takes my interest.
That's pretty much it for me at the moment. There haven't been many worthwhile XBLA/PSN titles in the last 6 months though.

Re: Do you just play shooters ?
I think it's 50% shmups, 20% turn based tactics (stuffs like tactical RPGs or things like Advance Wars), 10% Visual novels, 5% platformers, 5% RPG and 10% a mix of everything else. I'm pretty much appreciate any genres, but shmups are the easiest to get free and enjoy without the need to accomplish anything (Don't be mad on me, but I think playing for score/1cc is merely challenging self's performance and it's all up to the player themselves to decide how one should play). Plus points of blasting enemies like crazy.
There's no standards in shmups. Only what most people prefers.
Euroshmups are inferior, but not all of them sucks.
Jap shmups are superior, but not all of them great.

Re: Do you just play shooters ?
I have very little time for anything nowadays, so being a shooting game player is actually quite convenient, as shooting games don't generally take long to play, and get straight to the point. While my friends are immersing themselves in Final Fantasy XIII, Star Trek Online, or whatever timesinks are available at the moment, I sneak an hour or two of whatever shooting game is close to hand, whenever I can spare the time.

Either a shmup, an RPG, or one of those little bite-sized games you see on Steam for $10 or less. Not necessarily in that order.

I spend some time with shmups, but I tend to gravitate to something else out of my growing library of classic games, everything from puzzle, to platformer, to adventure. I own a few RPG's but don't play them anymore, my RPG phase long being over.
