Do you just play shooters ?
Ive been wondering lately if i should pretty much give up on regular gaming and dedicate just to shooting games ? i find these days that the only game releases i get excited about are CAVE games , i use to love fighting games but theres so many idiots on Live that it just puts me off .
I Think with shooters i can just sit there on my "OWN" losing myself in the gameplay and not have people pestering me every 5 mins saying "hey you wanna play some HALO or COD " i dont know maybe its just a phase
So anyone else think this way about gaming in 2010 ?

Re: Do you just play shooters ?
Personally, I'm still pretty interested in what games a being released, in what direction the market is going etc, but yeah, there are very few games now a days, that I actually want to play.
Maybe I'm just in a phase, maybe I just feel I've pretty much tried everything there is to try (CoD4 f.ex. It's brilliant, but it's "just" a slight evolution of Medal of Honor: Allied Assault), I dunno...I've generally been leaning more and more towards niche areas like shmups and sim-racing.

I play exclusively Shmups for over 7 years now. A bit Bemani here and there, but nothing too serious.
I don't even like videogames as a whole anymore.

Re: Do you just play shooters ?
I never played newer games to any extent. The only games I bought on the release day during the last ten years are FFIX, Darius Burst and Espgaluda II. Probably because I don't like FPS.
Today I play arcade games almost exclusivly (mostly shmups), with a side order of strategy games.

Re: Do you just play shooters ?
i only play shooters aye since i started in 2008 usually 2 hrs or so in the evening but unlike you i dont get excited about cave releases tbh given that theres already a lifetimes worth of awesome shmups to master .Shmups are my only gaming love .
Re: Do you just play shooters ?
At this point I pretty much only play shmups. Not because I don't like other videogames per say, but because shmups are so incredibly time-consuming if you actually want to learn to play them well, and balancing that with other interests and RL stuff is hard enough on its own.
In fact, I sort of feel like even with shmups I spread myself too thin a lot of the time. Sometimes I think I should just pick 5-6 shmups that I really like and devote my entire video-gaming career to mastering those. It would certainly be simpler.

Re: Do you just play shooters ?
i play RPGs and fighting games when i don't play shmups
about other types of shooting games: i like the Valve brand, so a match in Team Fortress 2 or Half-Life 2 is always fine

Re: Do you just play shooters ?
I play RPGs if I feel I have to relax a bit and take a break from "frantic" videogames. Puzzle games do it too sometimes, but then again, I suck at them and get nervous pretty quick.heh.
Do not like FPS nor racers, and sport games are boring.

I only play shmups.
The only situation where I'll play other kinds of games is when I'm with friends. Mostly Guitar Hero/Rock Band and fighting/racing games.

Re: Do you just play shooters ?
Shmups are just one of many genres I play. I tend to play more older games than new releases, though.

Re: Do you just play shooters ?
I spent most of my time on shmups,
Then just a little bit less time on lightgun/railshooter games,
And a lot less time on racing and music games,
And even less time on fighting games.

Re: Do you just play shooters ?
Pretty much just shmups, fighters, and online FPS games. With all these Cave ports out this past year, my shmup/other gaming ratio has increased quite significantly.
Re: Do you just play shooters ?
I haven't played a shooter in a few months, maybe. Possibly, I haven't even played a game lately... I can't remember. But last time I played, I was getting into Starcraft a bit more (and again). Truly timeless perfection.
Re: Do you just play shooters ?
Loving shooters more than ever, increasingly apathetic towards everything else.

Re: Do you just play shooters ?
I like shmups but I need to play other stuff too. Otherwise I'd get sick of the genre fast.
I play a bit of everything, really. The only kind of games I don't touch at all are team-based sports (soccer, basketball etc).

I still try to play everything
actually I've gotten a lot more general over the years and I am happy for that

Re: Do you just play shooters ?
I´m not just focussed on Shmups. I think meanwhile I´ve spent the most time with them, but Sidescrolling Beat ´em Ups would be equal here, if that genre hadn´t been dead for many years. I also like Action platformers / Jump n Runs very much.
Now and then I also play some First/Third Person Shooters, RPGs, Strategy games or Fun racers, but nearly none of them really serious (or often) anymore.

Re: Do you just play shooters ?
At the moment I play very little mostly because my shooters are PCB's and its freezing where my cabs are. Not to mention I end up getting on my hands and knees changing the PCB's. I did play mushimesama today though and replaced 2 joysticks, looms and buttons and got my 2nd best score on my first go.
I am still fond of Mr Driller 2 though, that gets play more than anything of late.

This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Re: Do you just play shooters ?
Despite playing Space Invaders and R-Type on Game Boy as a kid, I got "into" shmups about 5 years ago with games like ESPGaluda, Gradius V, Ikaruga, and Mars Matrix. I was pretty much a shmups-only person for the next couple of years, before I decided to finally branch out again and get back into other genres like action, FPS, rhythm, puzzle, platformers, etc... Shmups are my favorite genre but they only account for maybe 30% of everything I play and own.

Re: Do you just play shooters ?
I mostly play shmups and old action games in general. For the PC, I tend to stick with Doom engine FPSs and Crusader: No Remorse/Regret. I'll occasionally dig out an 80s or early 90s CRPG or adventure game (mostly for nostalgia's sake). Used to be a big fighting game fan, but I've been playing them less and less.

Today I play mostly smaller-scale games. The kind of thing you see on Steam for under $10. And shmups. Those are cool too.

Re: Do you just play shooters ?
my playing time is mostly shmups. I used to play a lot of fighting games but none of the recent ones have caught my attention.
Re: Do you just play shooters ?
Along with shmups, which I seem to be often playing the last couple years or so, I usually have an RPG going on the side.
The fascination with shmups also lended itself to appreciating arcade games more in general, using my HRAP some more. I play some Street Fighter Alpha or SF2Turbo every now and then, too, to get my fighter fix, but by all means I am not leet sauce in those games.
And of course I'm not limited to these things... though, with shmups by my side, it feels like I might be getting that way. Gotta spice it up.

Re: Do you just play shooters ?
I play shooters and fighting games, and every couple of months I'll pick up a JRPG, play it for a day, and then hate the genre.
And by fighting games I basically mean exclusively Melty Blood. I used to dick around in BlazBlue and the SoulCalibur series, but those games are ass.
Almost forgot, also play Magical Drop, that game is too hype! But yeah, I don't really enjoy most games any more. Stuff that's supposed to be godlike, like Bayonetta or Bioshock or whatever, tend to really bore me.

Some weekends I play later 90's fighting games with friends.
Alone I just play shooters.
One thing is worth mention is I can't play 3D games because it get dizzy. This sounds pretty fagot but is real. But who cares I hate modern games.
SNES Mega Drive forever.
Cool!

Played Muramasa: The Demon Blade yet? IMO the most gorgeous 2D game ever.2dvertical wrote:Besides shmups i play onrail shooters like time crisis etc. The wii opened up a small window for these but i got a topgun from pa to play the ps2 catalog on my ps3/lcd. hack and slash stuff, sandbox, 2d scrollers, usually just go get whatever is rated good hehe. and i dont care what anyone says Conan fucking rules.

Re: Do you just play shooters ?
The older I get, the narrower my focus gets. I'd probably be content with a collection of about 10 games at this point... VOOT, a couple shmups, a couple puzzle games, a couple board games, and maybe a rhythm game.
I think the biggest change is that I'm no longer interested in games where the only goal is to complete the game. I'd rather play something competitive, even if I'm not very good. The nice thing about games based around high scores or online multiplayer is that they're pretty open-ended... they're not really done until you decide you're done with them (or if the online community dies). So if you find a few good ones like that, you don't really need (or want) many games.

Re: Do you just play shooters ?
I tend to play shmups more often nowadays because they're short. Life gets busier as you get older and you don't have as much time to game, which leads to being appreciative of something you can just pick up for thirty minutes at a time.
But, I still greatly enjoy other games. If I find myself with enough time on my hands, I can spend hours having fun with RPG's and strategy games. In fact, I'm currently playing through Disgaea.
So yeah, shmups are my focus out of necessity/convenience, but I play games of many genres.
