Worthwhile non-shooter games from shooter companies

Post by Nemo »

Or at least interesting ones. And by shooter companies, I mean companies that basically only make shmups, so no Konami or even Irem. Some I found:

Dynamite Duke (Genesis) - Never knew Seibu Kaihatsu (Raiden fame) was behind this until recently. Fun game if you like Cabal-style action games, the coolest part is definitely when the game switches to Super Punch-Out fights.

Wardner (Genesis) - From Toaplan, a somewhat bland and easy yet amusing platformer. Stage 3 has a rocking track.

Seibu also made Empire City 1931 and its sequel, Dead Angle. The first one had the sprites drawn in a very film noir style.

Bloody Roar 1 from Raizing is also an interesting fighter. And not really hard to get into.

And who can forget the first console RTS Herzog Zwei, made by none other than the beloved Technosoft? 8)
Don't hold grudges. GET EVEN.

Technosoft also made the original Herzog for MSX and a cool Space Harrier like game for the system too.

Seibu made Battle Balls/Senkyu Oh!, an excellent puzzler.

Does Compile count? Though they made mostly shooters, they also made the excellent Puyo Puyo series.

I'm surprised Toaplan's Snow Bros wasn't mentioned yet. That game rocks!

Yeah, I love the first KuruKuru Kururin. I haven't played the other two, but I heard great things about them. I should check to see if Play-Asia still has Kururin Paradise for cheap. I didn't mention it because it was just Eighting that developed it. Did they absorb Raizing?

I believe Raizing made Naruto Ninja Taisen 2 for gamecube(not sure about the 3rd one) and it was fun as hell.

Toaplan made a few. Horror Story isn't bad. Outzone is border line shooter... definitely falls into the "shooting game" category.

Steep Slope Sliders and Trick n' Snowboarding from Cave were both quite a bit of fun.

Steep Slope Sliders was the best snowboard game of the 32-bit era! Way better than the Cool Boarders series.

I'll second the recommendation for Uo Poko. The two player mode is spectacular, and a lot of fun to play with a girlfriend/wife/significant other. Plus the cats are awesome.

Has anyone played Takumi's puzzler: Otenki Kororin (aka Weather Tales)? I've been thinking about snagging a copy.

And I agree with BrianC, Seibu Kaihatsu's Mezase SenkyuuOu (aka Battle Balls) is one of the finest vs puzzle games out there.

Two shooters doesn't make a developer a "shooter company". Treasure's list of nonshooters greatly outweighs their shooters. The same cannot be said for the likes of Cave or Psikyo.

Pa

*edit* Forgot they did Gradius V and Silpheed but my point still stands.

I liked Trick N Snowboarders more, but I've yet to play their PS2 release, Snowboard Heaven.

Trick N actually got released state-side, too....but it appears Snowboard Heaven didn't :(

On a tangent, Cave developed Yanya Caballista: City Skater for Koei, but I heard the game sucked :\ Might pick it up just because I'm a Cave whore.

Also, not sure if it might be because I was just late to the party or what, but those Touge racing games on Playstation kinda bite :( Never played the Xbox version...

You reckon? I thought the sequel was way... cooler (sorry)
Nicer visuals and pretty much the same play with the addition of the drop-through platforms move, why worse?

It's really hard to explain why I felt Snow Bros. 2 wasn't as good as the first, but something about the level design didn't seem to feel as good and the game seems to be a bit easier than the original.

i had a decent time with it, just don't expect a whole lot in the way of variation. its nice to look at, i had a .wmv trailer that i watched constantly along with the japanese Jet Set Radio trailer.

also, this was strange news to me, i played it before i knew of shmups and therefore Cave. i may have seen their intro screen and not even thought twice (or once for that matter). weird.
I have no sig whatsoever.

I have to agree o Snow Bros. Brilliant bubble bobble knockoff. Can't say I've played any more such games.

On the flipside, there are shooters from non-shooter companie sthat are good. Einhaender is probably the best example of such a thing.
