yeah, I was really pumped to see how it would look in 3D.

Bought one blue/red.
One green/magenta.
One other blue/red that had different tone.

None worked... :?
I could see a slight change with the first ones...but not: "Wow, 3D!"

I wrote (on an older thread during the early days of Shmup.com before it went under twice and reborn again) that Squaresoft's PSX game of Einhander does have support for those LCD shutter-type of 3D glasses. And it works surprisingly well. Another hidden shmup gem with 3D support from the get-go. Own two different manufactured pairs of LCD shutter-type of 3D glasses and the weight distribution isn't too bad with either one.

Both Samsung USA and Panasonic announced this week that they were selling the newest 3D enabled HDTV sets with prices ranging from $2,000 to $3,000 USD. Panasonic said that they were going to use their best plasma TV sets with the new-fangled 3D display mode + they will only be sold inside the Magnolia stores within the bigger Best Buy stores across the USA. Should be interesting to see how the upcoming 3D LCD shutter-type version of Avatar on Blu-Ray format fares compared to the original theatrical Pace 3D version shown on the big screen.

BrianC wrote:No mention of SMS? That did stereoscopic 3D and it worked pretty well. It had a shmup, as well (Blade Eagle 3D). The Zaxxon and Space Harrier games for it are pretty cool, though the latter has a low frame rate.
The 3D techonology used in the SMS 3D glasses was dervived from Sega's techincal know-how with their 1982 arcade game cab of Sub-Roc 3D with it's built-in 3D LCD shutter-type of glasses.

The famous stand-alone Vectrex console had it's own 3D glasses with the Vectrex 3D Imager accessory. Sadly, only three three Vectrex 3D games were made for it: 3-D Mine Storm, 3-D Narrow Scape and 3-D Crazy Coaster. Fetches some serious $$$ nowdays if sold in mint and complete condition with all the original paperworks and factory box.

Even Pioneer's LaserActive LD-based gaming console had cool 3D LCD-type goggles to use with some of it's 3-D based LD software titles + plus support with up to two goggles at the same time.

I've just this moment been playing Super Stardust HD in stereoscopic 3D on a 60 inch 3D TV!

I just walked into the Game Developers Conference expo hall and what was right inside the door as if by fate? Super Stardust HD running on Sony's newly annouced home 3D system. I played for 15 mins, before I was encouraged to suicide to "demonstrate the explosion" to the 10 or so watching wearing 3D specs.

And I admit it - it worked. It didn't detract from the experience (or playability) at all, and it looked great. However - it didn't add all that much. what they had got right was kept the 3D subtle, and I do think of all the shmups, one set on a 3D globe which still has what is in effect a 2D playing field was the most likely to work in stereoscopic display.

All the rocks and explosions and ship looked great and detailed, but the fact was there were no new play mechanics using 3D - it was just the same game displaying in 3D.

So yes - based on hands-on experience rather than my previous conjecture, I think some shmups could work finein 3D if handled subtly. However, I think game mechanics specifically utilising that 3D display technique should be handled with equal modesty, and avoiding the Final Destination/Horror film over the top 'Popping Out The screen" stuff.

Really though - 3D doesn't seem to add that much other than a novel layer of sheen. Like DEL says, 'if it ain't broke don't fix it'. Maybe 3D in shmups will equate to little more than slightly nicer looking graphics...

No! I'll have to try it. I know I have a pair of 3d glasses around here somewhere...

Why didn't I think of this! I have about 50 pairs of Red/Blue and Red/Green glasses as I've kind of collected them since I was a little kid.

Seems like people are getting bored of HD, so let's bring something else for people to spend lots of money on...

Why even bother with 3D, or even talking about it, there are tons of good shmups you can play, how they are right now.

Shmups are one of the last genres I'd be excited about playing in 3D.

Where the hell do you actually GET 3d glasses anyway (like what kind of store would sell them)?

I'm dying to try Minecraft (dope game, by the way) in 3D but have no glasses. I also wanted to try Futari but judging by Monouchi's post it doesn't work so well.

With Cave shmups being so notoriously easy, perhaps having to constantly micro-adjust the convergnce of your crossed eyes would add a little challenge eh?

Psssh, too simple. Maybe reverse the controls too and then we'll talk.

Darius Alpha for the PC-Engine had 3D with a special set of glasses you could get by redemption.

I wonder how this looks??

I use 3D Pulfrich glasses (clear, dark) for almost all of my 2D gaming and for some 3D games, too. For 2D stuff, moving objects appear on another plane. Makes it much easier to track enemies and bullets. Geometry Wars 2 is like a whole other game, and Tekken 6 looks incredible.

2D works for shooters. It gives pixel-perfect playability with no disorientation issues.

The push by developers to produce games that look and play like movies should be only one facet, one of many genres, but NOT the goal for all games.

ever
As ive already stated to Spadgy, no sense of vision or looking at the big picture. If there was ever time to bring new life to shumps to target todays generation of players it is here and now, even if the tech doesn't work perfectly 1st time, you can always have the option to turn the 3D off and play regular 2D for the f**king dinosaur and cavemen generation players like you know who.

3D tv is a horrible idea. 3D-enabled shmups is even worse.

Well - at least since I gave 3D shmupping a go yesterday (see earlier post) I opened my eyes a little!

So - SGGG2 - are those active or passive glasses (Wired up to anything or not)?

Yeah i did read your latest post (very interesting read), i just didn't know how to edit your quote with Del's quote. So i just ended up replying del's quote only.
Like i keep saying, you've got to look at the BIG PICTURE for future shumps developers which looks pretty much non-existent at the moment.

Yeah but that's selling out (I mean with reference to transforming a 2D genre into a 3D one).
Allowing yourself to be coerced into towing the mainstream line, with the rationale that "3D sells".
Yes it does. Its been made to. When your output is 100% 3D games there's nothing else for the public to consume. An enforced monopoly I guess.

Here's a crap analogy:- You're a sports car manufacturer and all you really want to do is produce and sell high performance sports cars. But the current market fashion is for 4 x 4s. They are pretty much the only thing that's selling. So you sell-out a bit and produce 4 x 4s.

Or the guy who loves to ski, but bows to peer pressure and takes up snowboarding despite the fact that he still prefers skis.

Having said that, if what spadgy is saying is true and it can be done effectively, then I'm all for trying it out.
But I'll still have the feeling that its unnecessary for the whole genre to go that way.

Mills added;
you can always have the option to turn the 3D off and play regular 2D for the f**king dinosaur and cavemen generation players like you know who.
Oh that's rich coming from YOU! I'm the one who plays both new and old titles.
You're the one who barely dabbles with the new and always jumps back on the old.
