I was enjoying the show too. BTW you can do tate on most normal TV sets, especially now that everything is LCD.

Dear Serraxor,
We, the internet, like your show. You have set out to create a halfway decent show for people to enjoy watching. We can confirm it is a halfway decent show for people to enjoy watching. Some would say it is above halfway decent. Others think it is great, like the thread starter and all your youtube comments. Enclosed in this internet thread are considerations to take for future episodes, which are fairly easy to add since you have already accomplished the hardest parts of creating a review show. We are patiently awaiting to watch your future episodes. Actually, we would not wish for your show to end, because we do not think your show sucks. We do not think it sucks at all. You can go nowhere but up. Please do so.
Sincerely,
The Internet.
What makes Bullet Heaven so neato is that Serraxor makes these all by himself and they're filled with his personality. It's his point of view on the games. It's his own music that he wrote (except for the stuff playing during the game scenes.) If you guys directed him on what to put in his videos then they become the Shmups Forum videos and not Serraxor's.clp wrote:hey serraxor no one is saying they suck , they are pretty good but need refining which is where the forum comes in , research and post questions here on any title and we will give you the depths of the game to ensure your videos are filled with the appropriate information regarding the games system , you could even do the first half of vids aimed more towards casual players and focus more on the ins n outs of scoring in the second half or whatever .This forum is a resource use it.
I kinda wonder that this is all really that you guys are jealous that you don't have your say in these things? (Return of the Comic Book Guy voice,) "It's not a true shmup review video unless we shmup experts provide the critical data. Everyone knows that Shikigami No Shiro 2's Japanese story is WAAAAYYY better than the US one. HE DOESN'T TATE!" Jeeze.
Maybe youse guys should band together and make your own shmup videos and see if you could do better? I seriously doubt they'd hold a candle to Bullet Heaven.

I keep reading your posts in the voice of the Lobster Mobster from Sharkey and George.
You make a fair case, mate, but again, for people on this forum, it comes down to a paucity of serious historical and technical knowledge. People here are never going to get particularly excited about any video producer who doesn't really display these qualities, even if his heart's in the right place and his stuff is nicely put together. The vids won't contain enough information and insight for them, and won't be seen by them to be helpful in educating people who are new to the genre or who only play shooters now and again.
Having said that, though, I totally agree that you should never pour scorn on people who only want to spread the word, and these videos are still great.

I'm a bit surprised you didn't expect that in todays day and age of the internet, where people revile in public anonymity, that a majority of any feedback is going to be negative. Its just not common for people to write back with positive opinions, but if people are upset over something (or just bored) - you bet your ass they will take the time to let you know about it. So don't let it get you down. I'm sure for every negative post, there are 10x people that were actually satisfied/appreciative of your hard work. It comes with the territory of posting compelling content I guess, and you do such a professional job, I was seriously impressed with the production aspect.Serraxor wrote:It sucks to know that the majority of the people out there that have watched my stuff think it sucks.

I have no clue where you're conjuring up all of this imaginary negative feedback. All we said is that the show would be better if it was backed by good research. It's hard to call that anything but constructive criticism.
I don't know if your expectations of us were, but I think you're overreacting a little bit.

There's the trouble. We are not they. Most of the people who post here regularly aren't any of those three things. Essentially, you're reacting to criticism outside of your target demographic.Serraxor wrote:[...] my reviews are aimed more at the curious, casual and the uninformed [...]
I can think of at least two famous phrases off of the top of my head saying that is a bad idea. You're gonna have to decide who you aim to please, even if it's nobody at all.Serraxor wrote:I wish I knew how to please everyone................

Well, of course, but I didn't say the videos lacked content, just a certain level of rigour that places like this will always spot and pounce on. I would tend to suggest that, given your stated aims, you shouldn't let this stop you, but if it does bother you, then keep playing and doing your homework, and soon even the snottiest tosser won't be able to find fault in them.Even if the presentation is to people's liking, if the subject matter makes me seem like an 11-year-old girl winning 12 tickets to the super bowl, what's the point?

I don't think that's really a misunderstanding of the genre. Shooters don't have to be played for score to enjoy them. Some games are just fun to play for survival. Some games have horrible scoring systems.Pulsewidth wrote:..and with this line you reveal your misunderstanding of the genre.
But yeah, I think the reviews could still use a little more info. Very light on substance.
Awesome intro music though.

That's because a lot of the (especially the early) criticism here was meant to be unconstructive and negative. Saying that someone doesn't know what he's talking about isn't constructive. That's an opinion and a defaming one at that.louisg wrote:This is not the correct way to respond to constructive criticism.NakedBoB wrote: I kinda wonder that this is all really that you guys are jealous that you don't have your say in these things? Re: Bullet Heaven (an interesting shmup-review show on YouTube).

Sadly, this thread has turned into one of the most explicit display of intolerance to criticism I've ever seen in a while.
Maybe some sayings could've benefited from a quick revision before being posted, but these were very few - and as with anything that's subject to criticism these will always pop up, no matter how good or crafted your work is.
We are all egocentric in our very hearts, but being this defensive all the time isn't a good way of dealing with it.

Re: Bullet Heaven (an interesting shmup-review show on YouTube).
I know how crappy internet criticism can make you feel.. it's pretty impersonal, so even if someone has good intentions, it may be interpreted as nasty. Sure, I've been there.. it sucks. So the options are, what, 1. take the advice, 2. make note of it and disagree, 3. tell everyone they are full of it and leave the thread. I just don't think 3 is a great choice (not that I haven't had that reaction in the past myself).
And I think that most of the criticisms I've seen here haven't really been of the attack variety. They've mostly been valid points about tateing (which on older ports can dramatically change the gameplay.. it's not just a different view), or scoring (which is the sole point of so many modern shooters, and can add much depth and replay value to a game). And even though a lot of people on the thread said they enjoyed the show, the response was pretty tantrum-y, no offense.

Re: Bullet Heaven (an interesting shmup-review show on YouTube).
I did. I know it can be time consuming to do a review even without anything more than commentary and poorly captured video, but it should be a comparatively small amount of time if anything worthwhile is going to be said. A fan of the genre reviewing whatever they like in their free time should be able to dig deeper than IGN.NakedBoB wrote:Who made these?
Review old games like Gaiares and it's perfectly acceptable to skim the surface since there isn't much depth, but Shikigami has more going on than blasting and watching coins fall off of the screen. Obviously that will be noted on a forum dedicated to the genre.

- Wow these comments are so positive this must an elaborate ruse! Are you somehow related?!
- It's amusing but needs more research.
- HOW CAN YOU BE SO CRUEL?!
And then just kind of continues. Weird.

I think I need to put things into better context here.
When I do a review of whatever I happen to be playing, it's mostly a very casual approach to something I'm interested in. If it's very playable, I'll look into it further. If not, I'll stick with my own opinions. Furthermore, since shooters aren't exactly setting the gaming scene on fire these days, my reviews are aimed more at the curious, casual and the uninformed, who might enjoy playing these sorts of games. If they choose to get obsessed with the high score, great, another devoted fan. If not, well, no trouble.
I enjoy the gameplay more than the score in these sorts of games, namely because I suck at playing them by all of your standards. I also highly enjoy art direction and sound design more than technical scoring systems. I understand that the whole point of a shooter is to get the highest score possible and if I happen to do that, well that's swell. I honestly don't think that I need to be able to 1cc every game that I play just to know what I'm talking about. That would be like having oh, I don't know, Dan Hsu have a perfect gamerscore for every Xbox 360 game he plays for him to know what he's talking about.
