How do you replenish energy in Galaxy Force II??...

Post by dave4shmups »

I've played this in Mame before, and I'd like to get it for my Saturn, but every time I play it in Mame my energy runs out, with no visible means of replenishing it. How does energy replenishment work in this game?

I think you need to avoid getting hit, and based on your performance you get a bonus recharge in between levels.

AFAIK, Galaxy Force II is not emulated yet by Mame.

True, but you can play it in Final Burn; that was where I played it; my mistake!

Hey, how do you control it? When I played, I couldn't map the directions to a pad or stick. All it gave me was left=up and left, and right=down and right.

I can't remember how, except that the controls were pretty clumsy.

A tip: DO NOT start in the 1st planet. I always had the impression that the 1st planet is some kind of training level ,and it costs you a credit.

I just CAN'T get past that level with enough energy to do anything in the next level.

If I start in the 2nd planet, then I can get pretty far in the game.

Then there are 3 things you must do to keep your energy high:

1 - Avoid Getting Hit
2 - Destroy everything
3 - Do it fast

I am no expert in this game, but think that doing those 3 things will make you have enough energy to finish the game.

In my experience from the arcade you have to go full throttle all the time since energy drain is constant, only slowing down for sharp turns in the tunnels. Don't travel at the default (medium) speed...

Yes, that's what I've meant with "do it fast".

I should have explained it better :D

I've only played the Sega Saturn version though..

It's depressing to think that at best people will only be playing this on Mame in future. I loved the arcade beyond almost anything at the time, and would happily spend ridiculous amounts of money to play the deluxe version again

But the possibility to play it again like that is lost. Like so many Sega hits, this could be experienced as Sega intended it only for a few short years while arcades had the machine. Then (as I understand it) most deluxe Sega simulator cabinets were later destroyed because they took up too much room for even collectors to preserve them.
