3 MegaDrive Shumps

Post by DrGamer »

Can anyone tell me if these 3 shumps are worth importing for my "modded" Genesis? :?:
1. GleyLancer
2. Eliminate Down
3. Undead Line

Or, are there other import Shumps that are "must haves" for the Genesis/MegaDrive?

BTW, I have Musha Aleste...
Thanks! :D

I personally dumped over $100 into importing Gleylancer, and don't regret it at all. It's a quality shmup, but it seems to be an aquired taste since it doesn't have a contrived scoring system.

Eliminate Down is real fun from what I've played of it, but I'm not sure about dropping $200 on it

You could go to the Shmups roundup at Sega-16.com
They pretty much list every shmup on the Genny-stack and offer a brief consensus.

Bio Ship Paladin and curse! you must own them!

Eliminate down is great, very hard I wouldn't spend too much on it though certainly not 3 figures. If you love the genesis shmups it certainly fantastic but tf4 is better imho. Play hellfire a bit they're quite similar in many aspects particularly the weapon system. You could try emulation to save yourself cash.

Gleylancer, Played it beat it think its overated, weapon system is excellent has a famous anime style intro and cut scenes music is good but too me the levels feel somewhat bland and lacking graphics in some stages are very very good 1st ones asteroid field but I think its the graphical style that puts me off. weapons are cool though good variety 8 i think and its fairly long but its up to you I'd rather play gaiaires.

import megadrive shmups not sure but these are certainly worth owning you probably have em.

thunder force 3 and 4
steel empire
gaiaires

1. GleyLancer
2. Eliminate Down
3. Undead Line
Gley Lancer - Very Good. Excellent visuals and sound, and nice game mechanics with options that you can move independently.

Eliminate Down - Technically excellent, but completely unforgiving difficulty kind of makes it more hard work than actual fun. Will appeal to you if you like R-Type or Hellfire.

Undead Line - Pretty good port of an X68000 game. Kind of like Castlevania as a vertical shmup. Extremely difficult, I usually only live through 3 stages before it's over. Luckily you get to choose the levels from the start. I prefer Elemental Master and Twinkle Tale though, which are both very similar to Undead Line.
Or, are there other import Shumps that are "must haves" for the Genesis/MegaDrive?

BTW, I have Musha Aleste...
Thanks! :D
Horizontal:
- Thunderforce III & IV - Two of the best shmups of all time! The best on the system!
- Gaiares - Stylish and difficult with a great weapon stealing system. Has a large cult following, but some people hate it.
- Aero Blasters - Another classic, really fun.
- Steel Empire - Really nice and unique visual design in this one.

Vertical:
- Elemental Master - Basically like Thunderforce as a vertical and in a fantasy setting with really excellent music. A must-have!
- Twinkle Tale - Stylish fantasy cute 'em up, that's incredibly well designed and super fun. Has a big cult following and is rather rare and hard to find.
- Verytex - Very fast paced shooter with excellent music. Gamplay kind of like Raiden.

I wanted to own these games until it was decided by everyone I talked to on this forum that they were garbage. Has the opinion suddenly changed, or is that a joke?

I had every one of those games at one time, and yes every penny spent would not disappoint you in anyway.

My advise, DO IT!

And it's not.

I'd like to correct that.

The game was originally made for the MSX. Then it was ported for the X68000, in a port that is faithful with the MSX version, but with much superior graphics, sound etc etc.

THEN it was released that Mega-Drive game. The MD game has the same atmosphere, same plot, but the levels are completely different. Also, the game has only 1 character, unlike the 3 characters that you can choose in previous versions.

The Mega-Drive is by far the worst version of all. I really doubt it was made by the same individuals that made the MSX/X68000 versions. (Psy-O-Blade is another MSX game brought to the Mega-Drive which was made by T&E Soft, and this one I AM SURE it wasn't made by the same guys..). The difficulty level is stupidly hard. It's not fun IMO.

Like I always say, go for the MSX version, it's a lot more enjoyable. Or if you can care enough, try to track down the X68000 version. The MD one is just not worthy.

The blurbs within the feature itself are just breif descriptions and rundowns of the strengths and weaknesses, but they are not reviews in themselves. If there are reviews, he'll link to them. Furthermore, all the site's reviews are conributor based. . .and since people tend to review games they love, it will seem a little bias.

And yes, Bio-Hazzard battle is excellent.

It must be a joke. I have never played Bio Ship Paladin, but Curse is among the worst pieces of junk I ever came across. The graphics seem half-decent in screenshots, but look horribly in motion. Slowdown, flicker, jerky scrolling? You name it, Curse has it. Plenty of it. Add to that some stage layouts that feel like they were randomly put together by a bunch of blindfolded apes. I could go on forever, but the essence of what I'm trying to say is simple: Curse is awful.

Given the choice, I would play a round of X-Dazedly Ray anytime over Curse. If you know what I mean.

Modded Megadrive? That's about the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Still, I couldn't help but to give in, and reply to this topic. You see, nobody's bothered to mention Zero Wing. Which I think, is pretty fucking disgraceful to begin with. I may be wrong, which I'm not, but this game deserves at least some relative mention.

Well, it's not quite the sin against nature you make it out to be, but yes, Zero Wing is certainly a worthwhile game. Far from Toaplan's best, but it's still a fun little game. It's like Arrow Flash or Whip Rush, a fun, mediocre game.

Twinkle Tale is probably the best of what's been mentioned. Slap Fight's also good, but apparently super rare.

In regards to my comment, it's because you can take the case of virtually any Megadrive/Genesis and voila, you have your modchip. It's generally not the wisest option to play games while your console is under this condition, but I've tried it in the past and spent a reasonable amount of time playing Streets of Rage 2, which was a japanese cartridge, in this:

It's a fact these can be opened and tinkered with safely. Though I wouldn't recommend it all for the sake of one or two games.

I had a GENESIS modded...not a MegaDrive....
It now has a 50/60 switch on it (which you MUST have to play Alien Soldier here in the states..(unless you use a Game Genie) and it has S Video out as well as the cartridge slot expanded to play imports....
Looks like I should look for these 3 also (besides my original 3 I started this topic with)
Bio-Hazard Battle
Twinkle Tale
and
Zero Wing...
Please keep the input coming...I am learning alot and really appreciate it! :D

Yes, I know you have a genesis. I have about 4 in total, and an american SNES that I've cleaned to death almost literally.

I can't see exactly what the differences are between the Genesis and Megadrive consoles. A few tweaks and finer precision, and a new style. Boom, you've just released a console that looks like something completely brand new, that still has the power of something else which looks entirely different.

I really hate Aero Blasters for the Genesis. I perfer the TurboGrafx-16 version anyday. :)

I played Eliminate Down before, and I really like it. :D

i picked up curse for a fiver here on the forum and enjoy it quite a bit for what it is (read: average). the only complaint i have (besides the graphic stuff) is the uneven difficulty, its pretty easy up until the last level, where lasers fire on you without warning, enemies swarm, and dying brings you to the very beginning. considering it came so early in the genesis' lifecycle, i find quite nice.

also, the manual is worth the price of admission alone (well my price at least).
I have no sig whatsoever.

Yeah, I'd say Curse is worth owning just for the great cover art. It's not like it's an expensive game anyways.

yes I was joking about bioship paladin its awful in the extreme far worse than curse.

Imagine flying a sludge barge that keeps on getting bigger and bigger and bigger till its so bloody big you can't dodge anything! I have seen this evil and played it, stay clear of this title.

another obscure genesis shmup is darwin, it has a very weird graphical style but not that good I haven't played it in about a year though.

Never played twinkle tale I'll check it tonight.

I'd also recommend Verytex, it's kind of like a Compile game in gameplay and great music. I'd also recommend XDR, I don't know why it gets hated on but I found it to be a decent shooter for cheap.

Trouble shooter (Battle Mania) was released in the US but its sequel, Battle Mania Daginjou, wasn't.

Vi Tokai released the first Battle Mania here as Trouble Shooter, but the second one was Japan-only.
