That's how I did my first sprites on my C64 back in the 80s.
Drawing them in the grid and calculating by hand the hex values...
Getting an actual sprite editor was a relief though

this was viewable a few years ago at a video games history gallery at Yebsiu Garden Place in Tk.
There were a fair few of these documents in glass cases , but i only recall the Space Invaders from the Shmups side. Even had listings for the prelim. code , again on paper with pencil. Awesome.
Great to see it out on the web, as there was a strict no photography rule in place.

This was how I did my sprites too, back when in the early 90s when I was experimenting with game programming using Basic. I burned through a ton of graph paper!
