FAQ
Affiliate links where applicable.

- Where can I buy it from?
The following sites ship internationally.

Play-Asia - PLATINUM COLLECTION (Located in Hong Kong)
Play-Asia - NORMAL EDITION (Located in Hong Kong)
Play-Asia - LIMITED EDITION (Located in Hong Kong)

- Is this game region-locked? Do I need a Japanese 360?

No. This game is region-free.

- How do I redeem my 1.01 DLC card?
  • 1. Turn on 360.
  • 2. Sign into Xbox Live (the region of your Xbox Live Gamertag doesn't matter in this case)
  • 3. Push the guide button, and move to the far left pane.
  • 4. Please select "Redeem Code" on the marketplace menu.
  • 5. Input the 25 digits on the card itself.
    - Please do the aforementioned procedure on the Xbox 360 dashboard (before the game has started or is loaded)
- Will the game work on my console?
All versions of the game, including Platinum Collection, are region-free, meaning it works on any Xbox 360 console.

- I don't use an arcade stick. I use _____.
If you want to use a HRAP or other device for PS2, check out my thread about the X Converter 360, which works with all HRAP1/2s, Hori Anashin PS2 controllers, PS2 Saturn controllers and more.

- What comes with the LE?

The limited edition of Futari comes with a 2-disc arrange soundtrack of both games, a cardboard box with different box art, and is guaranteed to have the 1.01 DLC card. Note: The LE's game case and box are the same, the normal edition's box art is sold independently. Reco is on the limited edition's disc and Palm is on the standard edition's disc.

The cave online limited edition includes a phone card and set of faceplate stickers. Now sold out, but still available on Yahoo! Japan. You will need to use a deputy service in order to buy from there. LINK

- What's different in the Platinum Collection version?

The Platinum Collection is identical to the normal version, but comes in a "Platinum Collection" case.

There was also a Futari themed arcade stick! It retails for 14,800 yen and was released on the 26th of November as well. It has a Seimitsu stick (good) and Hori buttons (not so good). At the time of writing this, NCSX has it in stock for $208 USD and Play-Asia for $159.90 USD. Both of those prices are unshipped, sadly.

MODES

from honorless
This is basic information intended to get first-time players up and running. Also see nZero's post on Arrange.

---

Ver 1.5
Original
Often considered the easiest mode of ver 1.5 to clear, Original features fewer bullets/less dense bullet patterns that move quickly. Bullet speed and density increases with the overall counter.

Scoring involves switching from shot to laser at the appropriate time to generate large gold gems, and collecting them as quickly as possible.
Use shot when the overall counter is green. The hundreds digit will range from 0-4.
Use laser when the overall counter is blue. The hundreds digit will range from 5-9.

Maniac
Denser, slower bullet patterns than Original.

Scoring involves chaining small enemies with shot to raise the meter, and collecting the gold gems they drop to increase the multiplier. When the multiplier is large and there are many bullets on screen, let the meter drain to zero and kill something with laser to "cash in" on the multiplier. Repeat as necessary.

Ultra
For experts, or those willing to endure many peaceful deaths. Selecting Ultra brings up a red warning screen; choose the option on the right to proceed.
1CCing the first stage takes perseverance. 1CCing the entire game allows you to fight the true last boss...

Scoring is similar to Original. The overall counter changes color every 2000.

---

Ver 1.01
Contains the same three modes as ver 1.5, with different bullet and enemy patterns. All modes are more difficult, and the characters play differently.

Scoring methods are similar to ver 1.5, but in Ultra the overall counter changes color every 500. (Other differences???)

WTF, I didn't get a DLC card but I want to play 1.01! What can I do?
As of December 2009, Cave has announced no plans to make ver 1.01 available outside of the DLC card. Your only option is to buy the card from someone.

---

Novice
Contains the same three modes as ver 1.5 (and 1.01) with simpler, slower bullet patterns.
All modes feature auto-bomb: if you have bombs in stock, you will use a bomb instead of dying. In addition, players receive one extra bomb from each bomb carrier.

Scoring methods are unaltered.

I can't find Novice Mode!
It's under the Arrange option in the menu.

---

Arrange
In the Arrange modes, both characters are on-screen and switchable on the fly. The main character fires while the "ghost" acts as a shield, slowing bullets with shot and reflecting them with laser.
The counter on the lower right determines how much area the shield character covers. It rises when bullets are being slowed, and drops when bullets are reflected.
Using the laser while both bottom counters are at 9999 will activate Fever, which increases player firepower and yields large gems from all reflected bullets.
Like Novice, Arrange mode has auto-bomb for all difficulties. Invoking the auto-bomb LOWERS all counters. (Bombing manually turns all on-screen bullets into gems.)

Scoring involves getting into Fever as quickly and as often as possible. Scoring methods are the same across all modes.

Misc.

- Tell me what you think of the game.
I have impressions of the game and stuff on my blog.

- What are the differences between the arcade board and the 360 version?
EOJ wrote:The good news is Maniac has all of the slowdown of the PCB, except maybe a few small spots. The bad news is Maniac has more slowdown than the PCB - I've confirmed this. Spots I confirmed last night include:

-Last phase of Stage 3 boss with Normal Reco (use shot and you'll induce slowdown that lets you get through the pattern without a bomb. Even TAC on the superplay DVD uses a bomb in the PCB version in this spot because there's no slowdown and a ton of bullets)
-Big dragons in Stage 5 with Normal Reco (again, just use shot and you'll get helpful slowdown that let's you do TAC's pattern on the superplay DVD much easier than what he had to deal with)
-Last phase of Stage 4 midboss
-Second phase of Stage 4 boss (makes this crucial scoring spot easier)

Some timing differences in Maniac:
-Stage 2 midboss dies a little too quickly with Normal Reco
-Stage 2 boss expanding balls take a little too long to destroy (like .5 sec more time)

I haven't tested differences between Arcade and 360 Maniac in detail yet, but overall I think they're pretty similar. So far I only noticed the following difference:
-Arcade maniac is missing some slowdown on the last icicle in Stage 2, whereas 360 Maniac has this.
- What's on the 360 port which the PCB didn't have?

- Updated graphics for "Xbox 360" modes
- Novice Original, Novice Maniac, Novice Ultra
- Arrange Original, Arrange Maniac, Arrange Ultra
- Xbox 360 modes for 1.01, 1.5 and Black Label
- Training mode
- Huge array of options (VIDEO)

Nice going Elixir, perhaps you could add that Videogameimports.com (located in the U.K.) currently has both editions of the game and the stick in stock.

Excellent op.

Thanks for the OP, Elixir. It would be nice to add more info, specially the mode types as adversity1 made over at NeoGAF. EOJ already covered the PCB but the 360 has lots of new stuff that needs special attention and explanation for noobs like myself.

I am trying to figure out why you would want to have 5 different screens showing your play? That and they all trail each other by about 1/2 a second so I assume it would be useful for like boss strategies/dodging and such?

That being said nice job on the new thread and I definitely approve of us needing to get a section in about all the display types.

For testing different display modes/filters, I suppose. The lag is there so you could compare the picture more-or-less directly by looking at them left to right without having to pause.

The "tunnel" view puzzles me a lot more, it's just distracting with no benefit to think of.

Wait a sec can you apply different filters to each of the 5 individual displays!!!?? If so that is awesome. I still do not have my game because standard shipping is taking FOREVER! Can anyone who has this game already confirm that you can individually set different filter options for each of the 5 screens?

Can anyone with the LE confirm if the CD contains the menu music heard when you're selecting which version of the game you want to play (Top Menu) in the 360 release? A short clip of it can be heard at the begining of the following video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HT-UySmIvA

Nice job, a good FAQ was what we needed :)

I've a question to add to this FAQ : is this version arcade perfect or not ?
At shmup.com forums', I've read that the slowdowns were totally different (like, more of them) and things like that.
I'm looking for more feedbacks. I'm not an 'PCB elitist' (I don't own any), but I definitely won't buy a PS2->360 pad adapter + the game if I'm not assured the 'arcade mode' (or 'original', 'PCB' or whatever they call it) is as close to the PCB as possible, not purposely made as a variant.

So, may anyone confirm/undermine that please ? Thanks.

EOJ posted his thoughts on slowdown in the port over at Cave-STG
http://www.cave-stg.com/forum/index.php?topic=559.375
The good news is Maniac has all of the slowdown of the PCB, except maybe a few small spots.

@AST-KOT: so far I think Maniac is acceptable in the port, but scores should be marked with an asterisk or something because the added slowdown occurs in a few big scoring spots. It's pretty unfortunate the added slowdown mainly occurs in these spots, otherwise we could discount it as insignificant.
Feedback will set you free.

Updated the OP and made categories for various stuff.

If someone wants to tell me what the 360 port has that the PCB didn't (modes and stuff) which I haven't covered, please do.

Also need pics of the limited edition (without the telecard and faceplates). I guess I could take a picture of that later.

Can someone give me a rough translation of the menus just after completing the game or after a game ends. I know it asks if you want to record the replay but if you don't does it not save you high scores?. There is mess of A and B prompts and i have no idea what i'm doing. Thanks

For Score Attack. Off the top of my head.

First prompt asks if you want to submit your score.

A: Yes
B: No

The next prompt tells you what place you are on the overall and character-specific scoreboards. (The first number is overall; the second character-specific. Arrange mode does not have separate scoreboards for each character.)
If you have broken the top 20 in either scoreboard, this prompt will also inform you that anyone who places in the top 20 must also submit a replay to XBL as proof*.

A: Submit my score
B: Do not submit my score

Don't think you can submit a replay to XBL if you're not in the top 20. Don't remember at what point you can save a replay to your hard drive, because I've never wanted to.
And I'm not sure if I'll be able to run through the game today and confirm all this (fiancé has been monopolizing the HDTV with Dragon Age) so hopefully someone else will do so and add more information, lawnspic. :)

* Guessing here. All I could decipher was "20th place" and the question "Do you want to submit a replay?" Naturally I chose "holy shit NO I do not want other people to see that embarrassment of a run"...but it replied with "Score not submitted." :(

PRO ANALYSIS of top Arrange Ultra replay:

[23:05:09] <nZero> god the milking on the tlb in arrange ultra is sick
[23:05:34] <nZero> because you still get the points for hitting while the bomb barrier is up
[23:05:44] <nZero> without actually taking down the boss health any
[23:07:49] <nZero> and with a full stock of lives, the tickle damage from hitting with the side of the laser is just right
[23:07:59] <nZero> kills her right when coming out of fever on the last life
[23:08:20] <nZero> not sure I'm gonna have the patience for this shit

[23:27:59] <nZero> counter before Stage 5 Boss - 187658
[23:28:08] <nZero> score before Stage 5 Boss - 2.184B
[23:28:27] <nZero> final score - 5.282B
[23:28:47] <nZero> I WONDER WHAT SECTION IS WORTH THE MOST POINTS
