My casual initial impressions of this wonderful shmup release...
As a player that usually tries to play shmups for survival not score, and who likes the first Mushi a lot, this game feels like "more of the same" in the best possible way. The visual quality of this port is really beautiful, which allows the charming personality of the art/setting to come through to its full extent. The PS2 port of the original Mushi feels so very muted and muffled by comparison to this, although the core game is still great fun in both cases (to put things in perspective, I will still definitely go back to the original PS2 Mushi from time to time, even though I own this sequel).
Ultra Mode doesn't seem playable by 99.9% of the population, feels even more hopeless than Ultra on the original Mushi. Maniac Mode and its bullet storms are exactly what I expected from a new Cave game, almost stereotypically so, should be a real crowd pleaser for Cave's biggest fans. Personally the Original Mode is closer to my favorite kinds of games, and I appreciate Cave including that mode, which I am really enjoying so far (first attempt reached stage 3, difficulty curve seems more fair). The visibility of bullets in this port is really excellent though, so I might use this port to practice in Maniac Mode, to maybe try to improve my sad danmaku skills. There are nice extras too, like Cave providing a good variety of in-game background wallpaper artwork to choose from, and several of them look quite colorful and beautiful on the HDTV.
As a 20GB 360 hard disk owner, who hates the noise of the console, I also appreciate the small install size to allow conveniently lowering the noise level down to be in line with XBLA games. Oh, and the
PS2 arcade stick to 360 converter works great!
