Console with the hardest shmups

Post by 8 1/2 »

It occurs to me that the MD/Genesis has a shmup library with the most difficult shmups around. I'm going to limit this to consoles that are known for their shmup libraries. No need to list jaguar or something. If I've missed any important ones please let me know. What's your pick?

Even though not known for its shmups... the Neo Geo has its fair share of difficult games in the genre.

MOst difficult shmups are on the console 'arcade', btw

I agree with 8 1/2. The Megadrive is home to the most difficult shmups, at least from my experiences. I can't remember beaten any MD shmups.

My 2nd choice would be the Saturn. I still haven't been able to beat 'Layer Section'.

I voted for Dreamcast......Gunbird 2, Mars Matrix and all....though technically those are arcade ports. Anyway, I don't really see a console having only tough shmups. The Genny has it's share of tough ones, but also has some really easy ones too. It seems as if in most cases there are a few really tough ones, but the rest are managable.....although I would agree that the Neo-Geo has a surprisingly high majority of tough ones.

Somebody forgot Gamecube...of course, Gamecube has lots of Dreamcast ports, but still.
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

I voted for PS2, as what I´ve seen of MD doesn´t compare in terms of difficulty, but if there would have been a Neo Geo option, I´d have voted for that.

Yes, that you for that entirely pointless statement that had nothing to do with anything.

Gotta go with Genesis/MD. Undeadline alone is enough to cement that one.

wtf!, the MD/Genesis has the most difficult shooters???! i disagree.

PS2, Easily. If only for the arcade conversions.

As a rule console exclusive shooters are easy, and more often than not the levels are way too long and boring. (Eg: Compile trash)

MD/Genesis!!!?? :) Name an MD shooter thats harder than say :Dragon blaze or Gunbird 2, both on the ps2

I totally discount your opinion because of the Compile comment alone, but anyways...

MD games harder than Dragon Blaze and Gunbird 2: Eliminate Down and Undead Line. ED is hard but not undoable if you continue. Undead Line is the king of hard shmups. It kicks the collective asses of Dragon Blaze, Gunbird 2, Image Fight, and all the other hard arcade games. Yes, they're insanely difficult to beat on 1CC (or in the case of IF, at all) but they're nowhere near the level of subliminal absurdity that Undead Line reaches.

Nice to see the current trend of random hate is alive and well on this forum.

*note* I can't seem to edit the list to include Neo Geo.

That was in rather poor taste. Compile used to support an organization to help cure AIDS and even had a splash screen for "Act Against Aids" with some of their games.

Yup. I think there is clear evidence that players can get post traumatic stress disorder from 1cc'ing DOJ or something...

You see, I hate the haters. ;)
Black Mariah's post is IMO, the most pointless statement in this thread, along with perhaps mine and now a few from Cmoon and 8 1/2.

I'll leave you to discuss this in peace now, for what ever reason you might have :)

Abadox, Starship Hector, the unbeatable Xevious, hard ports of Twin Cobra and Sky Shark, Thundercade, Sky Kid (harder than the arcade version), some 194X games which are long as hell, Star Force and Star Soldier which are painfully long and very cheap...

NES, you fools.

I thought the poll asked which console had the most difficult games... not which one had the most bullets.

No votes for TG-16/PCE? That system has Hellfire, the hardest version of Truxton, R-Type and some other very hard shmups.

While it also has Rayxanber II (by far the hardest shmup on the system if you ask me), it doesn't have many games that approach the harder MD games if you ask me... hence my vote went elsewhere. That's not to say that there aren't any, just that it's not the hardest...

This topic is pointless, but only because there are too many sheltered shmup players to get a valid result. And that pretty much goes for any poll ever held on this site, and that's not meant to be an insult, just the reality.

Yea, the Neo Geo has quite a few "toughies".

By most difficult do we include cheap, horribly designed games that are difficult due to their poor design?
