I can't remember if I mentioned it but www.vuze.com
Its a torrent client, transcoder and media server in one big package. It has random freebies on its servers that are officially free. Like atomic explosions in HD or space shots using telescopes and such. Really cool stuff.
So in a nutshell, you can use vuze as your torrent client. Drag any file into the PS3 folder, which will media serve to your PS3 very easily. If it needs decoding, it does it automatically. You just have to wait until you can copy it over.
So instead of using a torrent client, a video/music encoder program and a media server. I just use Vuze.

Anything on Quicktime is here now. Pretty much. Just go to 1080p MP4 encode links at the bottom of each movie page.
If using Vuze, make the save folder your SAVE A$ directory and it makes life a bit easier.

Gotcha-but what about a game like WipeoutHD that does run in 1080p-would that look worse on a 720P HDTV? Also, if you're going for a 720P set, do HDMI cables even matter, or are component cables sufficient? AFIK, the Arcade XBOX 360 doesn't have an HDMI port.neorichieb1971 wrote:Dave4shmups,
Uncharted 2 runs at 720p in the highest resolution. Therefore having a 1080p TV makes absolutely no difference at all. Uncharted 2 couldn't be done in 1080p, it would stutter and crawl and require some sort of major overhaul and much more powerful hardware using todays methods of programming the PS3.
The biggest game to utilize 1080p on the PS3 is probably going to be God of War 3.
Uncharted 2 looks good because of the textures, lighting and fragmentation amongst other features. An open world environment such as Uncharted 2 would struggle in 1080p.
God of War games cheat a bit in that they only show the camera from one perspective. That means you can't even look in every direction. The designers only have to draw what you will see by default. That leaves alot of room in memory to put all those little extra details in the graphics. And adding 1080p as the highest resolution.
Brentsg,
I am not a fanboy, but an anti Microsoft spokesperson. I don't mind about console wars. I just wish that the old days of variety and weirdness would spring back into the catalogs of all the machines available today. I am anti 3D shooter for the reasons that its pushed all the other genres into the corner. Largely due to (and its my opinion only) that Microsoft introduced the online world to console gamers and gave them only a few sorts of games to play using big budgets. They don't seem to be bringing anything that pushes the 360 in a non shooter/non sports way to the market. I haven't read this thread for ages, perhaps somebody said something that triggered a reaction. Sometimes I have time on my hands. Sorry.

For dave4shmups,
Yes, you'd still need an HDMI cable for 720p games even if you have a native HD TV/monitor that is capable of displaying in both 720i/720p (you'd have to select what HD format you want to play your favorite PS3 games from the PS3's A/V output selection screen). Let's say if you have a native 1080i HDTV and you select that you want to play in 1080p but all you'd get is a dark black non-responsive screen. So the PS3 would tell you that you'd need to select 1080i in order to display the picture properly.
Playing Wipeout HD and/or Wipeout HD Fury looks awesome in 1080p running at 60fps. This is the holy grail that devs strive for in their games. Trying playing the PS3 exclusive GT-HD game in 1080p and it really shines.
Using component video cables are good for SD signals at 480p. The PS3 can accept 480p input (i.e. from a standard definition DVD disk) and bump it up to 1080i/1080p. Playing a Blu-Ray disc on a 1080p capable HDTV/monitor looks razor sharp and dazzling.
If you watch some of the current off-the-air HD programming nowdays, you'll see that most TV HD broadcasts are presented in 720p to save on bandwith tranmissions...you might find the occasional 1080i off-the-air HD broadcast but not very often. (This is pertaining to USA off-the-air HD television programming for our international shmuppers.) ^_~
There seems to be a new trend of HDTV and HD monitors with the 1440p format emerging. Time will tell if this new higher definition format will surpass the current 1080p format in place for now. (Means having to upgrade all the current 1080p A/V hardware: HDTV, Blu-Ray player/recorder, etc.)

Both my 50" Panasonic 1386X768p as well as my 42" Panasonic 1024X768 screens accept 1080P.
These sets will just downscale it
And it looks amazing!
My old 4 year old (sold it now) Sony 50" prohection lcd did however show blank @1080p.

Resolution is not as important as how black your LCD can get. Anything above 720p on any screen 40" or below should look awesome.
Obviously one TV might look better than the other, but a standalone TV in your room will give very encouraging results.
