Think I'd probably go for a bullet, powerup, or medal. A bullet would be fairly simple, but the other two might be a little difficult lol. Guess it just depends on the shmup =P

If advances in portable holographic display devices were possible, it wouldn't be cool to show animated danmaku patterns enmating towards a shmup-themed cosplay wearer or even if dressed up as an end-stage enemy boss with bullets spreading outwards? The beautiful danmaku patterns shown in Psyvariar Revision's final boss are ace. ^_~

I guess as you all gave me such great suggestions and I failed I owe you all this humiliating post!

I admit it - I left it all until the last minute and I didn't get the time to make a shmup costume. I stayed with space though, and went as the Challenger shuttle and rocket from the infamous 80s space disaster. As you can see from the photo below (in which my wife stars as the USS Enterprise), we both had to make really shoddy last minute costumes. We had a hell of a lot of fun though. I've also included a second pic to show how shit my costume was from the front (I'd lost a lot of my 'flames' by that point. Long-johns for the win!)...

It was an amazing party. 30,000 or so people in Space-themed fancy dress is a sure way to have a good time. There were some superb costumes (in fact I met a whole group of girls and guys dressed as the Challenger crew, all blood-splattered and charred). My favorite costume was a guy dressed as the Hal 9000 computer from Space Odyssey, and some guy as the exoskeleton robot suit from Aliens was amazing too. I saw a chap with an awesome black hole suit too, and some guys as the control room crew from the Mercury missions were hilarious.

Kraftwerk played, and were far better than I could have hoped for, but my real favourite was old rave act Altern8, who played on this amazing stage built out of old rocket engines. It was a kind of 360 surround stage you could dance all the way around, and is spewed fire and smoke till the small hours.

There's lots in Bestival's pics forum if you can bare looking around a bit.

The spirit of Bestival is one of silliness, and this great costume from Total Recall does a great job of demonstrating that...

And Skykid - It wasn't Cosplay - it was dressing as a twat!
