... I agree. Thunder Force V just lacked some polish the other games had. I can't put my finger on it, but it just felt cheaply made. The bullets/shots were just poorly done, and made one helluva lame game. Sure, levels 4 and 5 are spectacular, but IMO thats all TFV had going for it.
I'd only place TF and TFII under it.
My biggest problem with TFV revolves around the Free-Range weapon. If you're playing this game for score, you MUST absolutely use it in order to rack up the 16x score multplier for the enemies that have them because that is the most powerful weapon in the game that can be aimed at any angle. Another problem was that if you were to set the game on the higher difficulties, it would be next to impossible to even kill the bosses before the crosshairs would disappear from their body parts, and you're destined to get the bad ending for the game if you don't have it or lose it early on the final boss.
Using it also makes the game look dull. You just... stand there and if you want to kill your target even faster, just over-weapon. You can even kill most minbosses this way before they let off their first attack and you'll be sitting there for a few seconds doing nothing because you blew it up too fast.
I still like the game, of course.
The only classics I never really liked were:
- The Resident Evil games: You could actually kill stuff with melee attacks in Alone in the Dark, and this series came out well before Resident Evil did.
- DoDonpachi: I liked the music and all, but then I realized that the curtain-fire/strong emphasis on score is really not for me, yet I don't mind playing Imperishable Night.
- Front Mission 3: It was really wierd every time I saw my characters' mechs get destroyed and yet they still appear in the following cutscene, and I had to turn on the "cinematic fights" (which wastes a lot of time) in order to see which parts of the mech were damaged (if at all) because the game would also skip the damage application process as well if this feature was turned off.
- Final Fantasy 8: Sucked hard because it used the Parasite Eve graphics engine (a 9 hour game on two discs, so that's pretty short) as well as having the most unlikable characters ever to exist on an RPG, not to mention that if you didn't know how how the junction system worked, most of the game time will consist of you taking 30-second summons for each battle.
- Space Quest: I was never able to beat this game because I didn't know what to do for the last part.
