What dis meaning is?

Could someone plz elaborate.
What I meant was whipping in a different direction, especially when jumping, often leads to accidental limp whipping. If you were jumping forward, weren't holding forward EXACTLY, and pressed the whip button real hard, it wouldn't swing normally, and will instead go into the limp whip.

It happens with the slightest shift from one direction to another.
With something as sensitive as digital control, it happens often enough for frustration.

Limp whiping is also so weak it can't kill bats.
Thusly my problem with it.

Okay, so games and their "fanbases" have been insulted through this entire thread. "Game X sucks and I think people who like it are just going by nostalgia" has been a pretty popular theme through the entire thing. WHY are we focusing on CVIV?

And yeah, I know your questions weren't aimed at me. I was trying to explain why I thought this board might not like the game, which was one of the questions you asked.

IN ANY CASE, CAN THIS THREAD PLEASE GET BACK ON TOPIC BECAUSE IT WAS GOING WELL FOR SO LONG

Late to the party, but...

I don't see how Zelda II and Battletoads always show up in threads like this. Lots of people hate them now, lots of people hated them back in the day (aside from Nintendo Power creaming its pants over Battletoads). Isn't being well-liked a prerequisite for being overrated?

And my votes go to:

Mario Kart 64:
Loved the SNES game, but the gameplay in this one wasn't nearly as solid. Granted, the game is designed to be social background noise for little kids and drunken college students... balance and skill-based gameplay were never its selling points.

Goldeneye:
As is typical in threads like this, I'm just going to say I don't like the game, that I don't see what the fuss is about, and give zero justification. It'll piss off a lot of people and go nowhere. Awesome.

Maybe my memory's off, but IIRC the whip HAD to "swing normally" before it would go limp...even if you held the Y button after you pressed it initially, you'd crack the whip "fully," and then the whip would droop and you could flail it around.

Not trying to fan the flames or anything here, that's just the way I remember it. Maybe I'll pull out my old cartridge later on just to test that out.

A recent thread reminded me of this. Not a game, but a genre... I hate beat-em-ups. Double Dragon, Streets of Rage, Guardian Heroes, Final Fight, WHATEVER... they bore me to death. I get the appeal of the concept, but I don't get the appeal of the gameplay.

Maybe this thread title should be renamed to "Why Castlevania IV sucks ass."

I know some people don't like classic videogames, a least most of them are better than most mainstream titles (yeah, I'm on the anti-mainstream warpath again. My PS2 gathers dust while my SNES gets all my gaming time recently.)

Jesus Christ FatCobra, shut up. This thread is not about mainstream gaming, it's about classic games, so stick to the fucking topic for once instead of completely ignoring it to drag out your soapbox again (topic: "Do you like Italian food?" FatCobra reply: "Yeah. But you know what I hate? Mainstream gaming. Seriously, [rest snipped]"). We all know how you feel by now, so please, the horse is dead, let it rest in peace, seriously. At least the CVIV argument had some relevance.

Gah, I let it slip again. I guess I'm starting to lose faith in videogames, and I miss the "Golden Age" of the 8-bit and 16-bit. Oh well.

That said, I never really liked any of the Castlevania series. I guess I found the gameplay too slow and boring for my tastes. I'll add some fuel to the CV4 fire and say that I thought the game was dull as well, especially considering the fact that I am not a huge Castlevania fan. I also don't like Contra for some reason, I guess I'm spoiled by Metal Slug.

Here's another classic game I didn't like: Super Ghosts 'n' Ghouls. For some reason, the control felt very off for me, plus Arthur's armor must have been made out of cheap tin because it would break apart the moment you touch any baddie. Also, he jumps too weirdly, in a clumsy sort of way.

I also don't like Sonic too much, was more of a Mario fan back in the day. A classic Sonic game basically boiled down to this: Run really, really fast until you either bump into a spring or robot, or you fall into the spikes or pit. At least with Mario I can jump with extreme precision, plus he's got cooler powerups.

So the game is shit because you ignore the level design and run into the obstacles? Sounds kind of retarded. :?

I would have acceperated the level design if Sonic didn't move so damn fast. Maybe I can't handle his speed.

Usually I see the opposite complaint... Sonic games are way too easy. I love 'em, but they're easy as hell to complete without losing a life. The Advance games are harder, but that's because they're cheaper.

Can I re-iterate that I don't like -

Devil May cry (too much shooting)
Dead or Alive (any) (too much about graphics)
Virtua Fighter (Any) (just bland fighters really, technical or not).
Tomb Raider (any) (just boring and bland)
GT4 (any) (too technical, no gameplay)

And thats it from me. Oh, And I like Castlevania 4 on the SNES. :D
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

... I agree. Thunder Force V just lacked some polish the other games had. I can't put my finger on it, but it just felt cheaply made. The bullets/shots were just poorly done, and made one helluva lame game. Sure, levels 4 and 5 are spectacular, but IMO thats all TFV had going for it.

I'd only place TF and TFII under it.
My biggest problem with TFV revolves around the Free-Range weapon. If you're playing this game for score, you MUST absolutely use it in order to rack up the 16x score multplier for the enemies that have them because that is the most powerful weapon in the game that can be aimed at any angle. Another problem was that if you were to set the game on the higher difficulties, it would be next to impossible to even kill the bosses before the crosshairs would disappear from their body parts, and you're destined to get the bad ending for the game if you don't have it or lose it early on the final boss.

Using it also makes the game look dull. You just... stand there and if you want to kill your target even faster, just over-weapon. You can even kill most minbosses this way before they let off their first attack and you'll be sitting there for a few seconds doing nothing because you blew it up too fast.

I still like the game, of course.

The only classics I never really liked were:

- The Resident Evil games: You could actually kill stuff with melee attacks in Alone in the Dark, and this series came out well before Resident Evil did.

- DoDonpachi: I liked the music and all, but then I realized that the curtain-fire/strong emphasis on score is really not for me, yet I don't mind playing Imperishable Night.

- Front Mission 3: It was really wierd every time I saw my characters' mechs get destroyed and yet they still appear in the following cutscene, and I had to turn on the "cinematic fights" (which wastes a lot of time) in order to see which parts of the mech were damaged (if at all) because the game would also skip the damage application process as well if this feature was turned off.

- Final Fantasy 8: Sucked hard because it used the Parasite Eve graphics engine (a 9 hour game on two discs, so that's pretty short) as well as having the most unlikable characters ever to exist on an RPG, not to mention that if you didn't know how how the junction system worked, most of the game time will consist of you taking 30-second summons for each battle.

- Space Quest: I was never able to beat this game because I didn't know what to do for the last part.

Possibly. But to me, they just feel like the retarded little brother of the fighter genre with 500% more walking to the right. I can enjoy a level or two in most of them, but then it becomes a grind.

Yes, that is a so called classic game I really dislike (hate is maybe just a bit too hard a word... though it comes close).

Also a game the original Mario Bros (not the side scroller - which I love!) is something I can't even remotely see the charm of. !

I agree with you sethsez, but I like Guardian Heroes because it throws in SF2 fighting and then the RPG elements increase replayability and make it deeper. In the end the 6P mode is the best though.

I also was happy to read your SMW impressions. I just recently went through the game again to find that the level design is lacking. Yoshi's Island and Mario 3 havn't been beaten.

I don't get beat-em-ups, either. If Indentical Goons #1 and #2 are too dumb to hit you from behind while you pummel Indentical Goon #3, then all you do is tap punch 7 times to knock him down, then walk up to the others and do the same. If they're smarter than that, then you just jump kick the Identical Goons to the right to knock them down, do the same for the ones on the left, and repeat until they blink away into oblivion. Yes, that's oversimplifying it (you could, like, hit them with a blunt object instead of punching them). Okay, there might be more depth than that, but I'm not seeing it. I will say, though, credit-feeding your way through Final Fight after drinking a few beers is a great way to make up for a shitty day at work.

I used to think Super Mario 64 started the era of platforming that I didn't like, but in retrospect I think it was actually SMW. In SMB3, you never went back to old stages to find alternate exits or anything like that. Sure the game had secrets, but they were there to help you reach the end, not make the game longer. It's probably because SMW was the first SMB that allowed saving... the focus changed from avoiding traps and clearing levels to exploring every square inch of the game. Not that that's inherently bad, it's just not my thing, at least anymore.

NEW ADDITION:

The Klonoa games.

Okay, okay, they're not classics, but they're certainly a beloved underdog, and they're nothing but mediocre yet pretty platformers. There are numerous better games in this genre on the Genesis and SNES, so the amount of love this series gets is rather odd.

The secrets in SWM were not there to artificially extend the game's lifespan - the stars in Mario 64, sure, because you HAD to have a certain amount to go certain places. The goal of SWM was the same as Mario 3 - to finish the game by clearing levels. The secrets were there to find, IF you wanted to.

Personally, I thought the linear approach of Yoshi's Island was hugely dissappointing after the free-form approach of SMW.

You seem to get them perfectly well actually. They're good mindless fun, and sometimes no matter how many times you get a nice loud BOOOOOOM from the death of a Raiden boss, it's not enough to make you feel better about your work day. You need to Crack Some Skulls. Here is where beatemups are king. Some have a bit of technique, but mostly it's good enough to be quick on the buttons and good at leading enemies so you don't get clusterfucked in a corner by four of them. I will say I prefer the ones with a healthy element of interaction with the backgrounds - Capcom ones are actually the worst for this - and the most likely to cheapshot attack you. People think all these games are creditfeeders. It's not the case, I'd have to creditfeed some shmups to ever stand a chance against them, but there are scrolling beaters I can 1CC.

So - move to the right, eliminating enemies across different backdrops. Does this sound familiar to anyone? ;-)

You also HAVE to clear a certain amount of levels to beat SMW.
The stars in SM64 are levels, with 6 in each world. The only difference is that there is more freedom to chose the order you want to beat them in.

I'm missing your point here... course you do, same way you HAVE to clear a certain number of levels to beat Mario 3! The difference between Mario 64/World is that you DON'T have to collect a ceratin number of ITEMS to finish SWM or SM3, you do so in Mario 64. The changes between each star aren't that radical, you're still essentialy re-visiting the same world seven or eight times if you want a perfect tally. SMW you maybe had had to do some levels twice if you wanted every level opened up. SMW made you do the bare minimum to complete it (you could do it in ten or so levels!), but Mario 64 used the stars as devices to artificially lengthen the game, because it was impossible to provide the same volume and diversity of levels in 3D as in 2D.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas?
You sir are on crack.

Beatemups?
Okay maybe if it was just the shitty Konami ones then I'd agree. Oh and this goes double for whoever mentioned the Streets of Rage games..silly silly people.

Klonoa?
You guys must be joking

Ninja Gaiden?
Broken? What?

And SMW >>>>> Mario 64. It's not even worth comparing. Honestly the only thing wrong with SMW is abusing the cape to fly through levels.
---------
Alright my additions

Alundra(A charmless masochistic unfun zelda-clone. I'd rather play Landstalker)

Beach Spikers(I like how the camera shifts behind the person making the spike..actually no I don't. Tecmo's wankfest DoAX is actually far superior.)

The Monster Rancher series(Neat idea except you have the worst battle system on earth)

Guardian Heroes(Although I have two copies to sell in case I need to pay a bill)
