The system flat out has the best titles available for it and the most coherent online gameplay of all the current consoles.

Wii's resolution is crap and a majority if their games are lame for non-casual gamers (though I eagerly await tomorrow's release of the Metroid Trilogy) out there and their online play is aweful.

The PS3 is a good platform but their game choice is still much much less than the 360, and their online "experience" doesn't even compare to the 360 (though I like their implementation of the store better, it's not as laggy as the 360's). And everything released for the PS3 is in 720 for some reason, not 1080. Plus the "achievement" factor on the 360 is better implemented than the PS3 - those little statues are boring.

This is not to say the Wii and PS3 do not have some excellent titles, but overall the 360 sums up everything better. This is why people keep buying them.

I was specifically referring to PS3 games, which the PS3 will not upscale. The PS3 has a 1080p native XMB. PS1/2 games are upscaled (I'll have to double-check), as are DVD movies, as well as Blu-ray movies (the few out there that are sub-1080p).

i would not be happy to pay for a service like LIVE and have to listen to that

i dont really have an opinion on the console war.....i own a PS3(bluray player essentially) and dont own a 360....although im giving thought to getting a NTSC-J 360 for the cave ports....

I have found just as much bigotry and hatred playing online PC games and with xbox live there is always the 'report player' button and the option to mute the lowlife upsetting your game.

ya....ive never really delved into online gaming or console gaming for that matter, so this was my first experience with online communication in games, and i just couldnt believe some of the stuff i was hearing.....

Well I just bought my first Xbox360 yesterday, a deader off craigslist. System seems pretty old, from 2006 maybe. I'm going to take it to a local reflow service tomorrow but if that doesn't get it fixed then it's going to the bin. At least I will have gotten a cute little SATA cable that will save some space in my mini-ITX box, and a heatsink that I can use when I get my first *working* 360.

But it looks like the GPU heatsink was improved already in later revisions?

My XB360 lasted longer than almost everyone I know, and it was one of the first (Japanese) models. I have replaced it once, and didn't even bother with the hassle of sending it in and dealing with all that crap (even though it was still under warranty). I played the hell out of it, and I knew I'd have to replace it with a new one eventually, so I did. My replacement is fine.

I got the XB360 at about the same time the PS3 and Wii came out. So why did I choose to buy it and get all the multi-platform games for it, instead of going with a PS3? The exclusives had me (and still do). I got the XB360 for the games I can't play on any other system, but mainly for Dead Rising. As a Capcom fan since the NES, it was a no brainer for me.

Were trends a factor? If you count developer trends, then yes. Even if the system had a questionable reputation, developers were making exclusive games for it, so I got it to play them. So the system has a questionable reputation; as did the NES, SCD, first PS, the PS2, and the first Xbox (in Japan). Sure, it's not fair to the consumer, but it never is. Moreover, life's not fair. Do I miss the days of durable hardware? Of course, but we live in different times now (where everything seems disposable); something I have no choice but to accept.

As soon as the PS3 has some exclusive Capcom titles, I'll get it, too. I also own a Wii, XB, GC/GBA, PS2/PSP, 3DO, N64, NGPC, PS, SS, SNES, PCE, SCD/SG, and GB/NES; I bought that 3DO you see pretty much just for SSFIIT! I have listed my reasons for getting an XB360 below.

Personally I think 360 is a bag of shite.

I admire 360 loyalty I do. But to say the PS3 is worse because it lacks online capabilities or 1080p upscaling is just a joke.

From what I can tell, Bill Gates could shoot all 360 owners in the knee caps and they would still go on all 4's to buy another 360.

From what I can tell this is due to -

A) Its the facebook console - It gathers hoards of people/friends/strangers and lures them into this "OMG I can't wait to get home and play Modern Warfware will Billy"

B) Most of the games come into the sports/FPS and racing genres, so if you like those genres its the best console.

People feel lonely playing the PS3 because Billy ain't got a PS3.


The PS3 has 29 games that run in 1080p mode (360 has a lot less). MGS4 does not run natively at 1080p but it does upscale to 1080p.. So whoever said it doesn't needs to get their facts right.


The PS3 slim is now the quietest, best value for money console on the block today. Its unlikely to go wrong for years and its got lots of cheaper aspects to it than the 360. HDD's and Wireless cost a twice as much on the 360 and you have to pay a premium for a gold status service online.

Why anyone would buy another 360 at this point is beyond me. Maybe they have so much money they want to throw it away. Billy will get mad at you if your console gets the RROD since his gold ticket online service is running out whilst your machine is getting repaired. But I suppose you could always buy 6 of them just in case the other 5 go wrong.

If Killzone 3 came out at 8000p resolution with 5.9 billion players online. The 0.9billion people on the Earth that wouldn't buy it would all be 360 owners.

The PS3 and 360 have more or less an equal number of FPS and sports games. The main genres that set the two consoles apart would be dating-sims and shmups, both of which the 360 has way more of. This being a forum about shmups, it's no surprise that the 360 is preferred by most members over the PS3.

Developers have to add their own upscaling software to the games they make. The PS3 by itself doesn't upscale them.

Well I'm the wrong person to talk about 360 because even if they were free I wouldn't have one.

The day Halo came out and took the console FPS to a new era was the saddest day of my life. Since then just about every other genre has taken a back seat. I'm relying on Sony to make cutting edge games that aren't based on real life physics and perhaps have a story worth playing through. But thats just me.

Nintendo are fine with me, they do what they do and they do it great. I'm really not fine with 360 and PS3 delivering the exact types of games its just nonsense. I'd rather the KZ2 team from Sony to do something else other than a FPS game. If you want to play FPS games buy a 360 its got droves and droves of them.

Don't worry, I'm just venting. Obviously I have a personal problem because it makes me kinda sick that people support this 360 console. If 360 didn't have online this and that people would have dropped it 2 years ago or more and it would be a dead duck by now. I don't agree with console wars any more than i agree with wars in general (apart form advance wars, thats a cool game!) Every console has its advantages and disadvantages, and each console maker goes through ups and downs with each generation. Sony despite having creamed the last two generations, has lost first place to nintendo and is fighting over the scraps with a console that according to some statistics has a failure rate of 54%. For sony this is a disaster of biblical proportions.

There are many reasons as to why the PS3 hasn't beaten the 360 into 3rd place (yet). I'm not going to go through them as this whole argument has been played out on countless blogs and countless forums all over the web. What I will say is in my personal opinion the 360 is possibly the best console I have ever owned for sheer enjoyment it has given me. As long as microsoft are happy to fix mine if it plays up I am happy and if they didn't I would probably buy a new one.

And if Sony make this new wii type controller a reality, the PS3 will have the best exclusives this next 12 month period, it will have the wii's controller and it will have nextgen graphics. At the current price points at $299 a piece, you get more for your money with Sony by a long long shot. Sony know their downfalls right now, gradually they are coming around to getting it all sorted.

The reason I bought a PS3 was for blu ray (movies of which I own 155) and the Ico team/God of war teams efforts (games with 1player adventuring at the heart of the gameplay, I'm not into point and shoot games). On topic I don't know why the hell anyone'd buy another 360 if theirs died under warranty. Two of my friends had 360s die in a non-RROD fashion, and MS refused to cover it, so they just left the systems on for an excessively long period in a poorly ventilated area and *poof* magic RROD and MS agreed to fix the whole thing for free. Eh, I dunno how true that is since my memory's shoddy from abusing illegal substances while watching anime but that's what I remember them telling me. But if my 360 died and MS refused to cover it, I probably would buy another one because well fuck it's got some really nice games on it that I'm not going to play anywhere else. I don't even use XBox live, I let my free trial account expire, so I'm not quite feeling the "Facebook is a deceased equine" argument.

From a gaming perspective im not a Sony fanboy. Up until this generation I owned every console (and still do) apart from xbox and 360. I'm more of a anti 360 fanboy than a PS fanboy.

My PS3 is used 95% of the time as a movie player. I also am reluctant to buy into this new wave of FPS style game unless it has ambiance or some other pulling factor. FPS is a technical demo because they all play the same. Point and shoot. So not really much to be getting on with.

Slight digression from the 360 (but not that far). I love FPS's there's no greater pleasure to be had in multi-player gaming than sneaking up on your mate and putting some kind of anti tank weapon through the back of their face.

FPS's have become a kind of "all that is wrong with the games industry today" kind of genre. But seriously look at previous generations, they all had their go to genres which were milked and left as a shrivelled up husk. Even our own beloved shmups, just take a quick glance through the xenofiles. There are more bad games than good games and this is true for every popular genre.

Software companies will always try to emulate a successful game made by another company but this doesn't mean that there are no good FPS's, far from it. It just means that when a good game does come out it really impresses people (Like COD4)

If you want to base it on shooting games, then it still comes out on top. It also has a good-sized hack & slash library with Castle Crashers in the lead. The new PS3 model looks cool; I think the design looks great! But if Sony is making the system cheaper now, they probably did it by making it with cheaper parts and cutting corners. Not much time has elapsed since the new model surfaced, and we already know that the thing is "unlikely to go wrong for years?" What fact is this based on? How do we know Sony's not back to their old hardware habits again like in the PS and PS2 days? Answer: We don't, because it is still too early to tell if the cheaper parts and cutting corners have made the console less durable.

There you've said it. The "communities" is what is keeping people putting up with the 360. FPS games rely on communities and there are alot of community games on the 360. Its like facebook or myspace. If its popularity died people left there would move on too. I have only played Burnout paradise online with someone before and it was ok. I preferred burnout 2 though.

I wish this gen was not about online. Online can go screw a pigs ear as far as i'm concerned.

Burnout paradise - Its ok online, it does what it says on the tin. By far the best online experience i've had so far.
Street fighter 4 - After 2 days I was yawning so hard seeing the same moves over and over, win/lose.. I didn't give a shit.
Resident evil 5 - Online co-op... So now I have to rely on someone being online when I am.. thats a crap idea (for me personally).

And RE5 is even worse with the computer playing.. OMG its so frustrating.

Shmups for me are about personal challenge and nothing to do with communities or forums. I only buy a shmup about once a year now because they don't differ from whats gone before. Once in a while something newish and fresh comes out, but for me its got to be to my liking and fresh and new. Thats a tall order these days.

I don't give two shits if Cave port stuff over. I'll buy the PCB if its that important to me. I know thats not a prospect for most here, but really buying a JP 360 and paying import prices is only slightly better.

As for FPS in general. I know its not strictly a FPS, but I watched 2 hours someone play Gears 2 and after 10 minutes I was so bored of the same online people running towards the same places and exchanging fire over and over and over and over and over and over. If thats gaming for the nextgen you can keep it. Its so lame like a broken record.

I'm not just pissed with the 360, but the whole games industry. I just blame the 360 for it because it leads the way and others are somewhat following. Its killed the JP niche market completely dead. You won't find any new zealand stories or Ghouls and ghosts games now.. A new castlevania is coming out.. oh look, its like prince of persia!! Pretty much, you can blame 360 for it.. Because online is the focus of EVERYTHING!
