Didn't you get rid of an asian PS2 not too long ago?dave4shmups wrote:Amazing news! I may have to pick-up an import PSTwo now! Except, I'm really not into Bullet hell stuff, and this is one of the only non-manic shmups on the system.
Feedback will set you free.

There's no need to bring that up, it was a mistake. But I sure as hell am not about to sell my XBOX to get a JPSTwo-and if I go import PSTwo again, I'm DEFINATELY ordering a Saturn PS2 controller; the Dualshock2 stinks for shmupping.Acid King wrote:Didn't you get rid of an asian PS2 not too long ago?dave4shmups wrote:Amazing news! Point well taken about the old-school shmups available on the JPSTwo, Raiden! I just tried out Xexex on Mame, and it's awesome!
As far as videos of Raiden 3 go, I'm positive that someone ripped a huge video, broken up into several parts, of the first 3 stages of the game off of a DVD they had. Don't know if they're still around, though.
Personally, I wouldn't worry about the a bad port of this game; it doesn't look much more complicated then Gradius V, technically speaking.

Hurrah! Raiden 3 is excellent. A true Raiden through and through, although I'm not sure how much of the old staff is actually back. (There's a full list of names in the credits of the game - ie, not just nicknames - but I don't know who any of the people are...) I'll pick this one up for sure, as I've played it enough in the arcades here to know that it's good. The PS2 should easily be able to run it too, as while the game looks good, it's nothing the PS2 can't handle.

The Raiden ship still looks a little slow. Would have been nice if they'd upped its speed a bit to something more like Cave standards.

Yeah, but if they start porting shmups like this to the PS3-well, let's just say that there'll probably be some PS2 shmups that won't work on the PS3-so I'm optimistic that this will turn out well, and I'm glad that this is being released on the PS2. Remember, there were some who actually liked Gigawing Generations; I still say that one looks fantastic.MadSteelDarkness wrote:I'm definitely not preordering this. I want some feedback before I commit. The combination of Type X and the PS2 has me more than a bit concerned. But here's hoping, though...
And while Raiden 3 is Type-X, it doesn't look any more graphically complex then Gradius V, and the PS2 handels that beautifully.

well, you could say that about Gigawing Generations, too, and look how the port turned out.And while Raiden 3 is Type-X, it doesn't look any more graphically complex then Gradius V, and the PS2 handels that beautifully.
I mean, it´s funny, during 8- and 16bit times we were used to seeing home ports that looked clearly worse than their arcade origin, but going back to that after getting arcade perfect ports for so many years is a bitter pill to swallow.
Things I noticed about the video:
- no ground enemies? Seems more like Viper Phase Two than a Raiden game.
- bad bullet visibilty, some slowdown, I hope this is due to the video compression
- audiovisually disappointing, looks and sounds worse than any previous Seibu shmup
- Psyvariar style bullet buzzing? Nothing to see, it just sounds like that. Is this related to the multiplier?
- Having a multiplier between 1.0 and 2.0x is a nice way to implement scoring techniques without giving up the series´ survival-focused roots.
- too many bullets for a Raiden sequel, in this respect it looks rather like a Raiden Fighters sequel
- small hitzone! Even with the slow ship speed, this could actually be "too fair" to be a true Raiden sequel

GWG looked like arse and hate a framerate that stuttered more than Porky Pig on speed in the arcades too.

There are ground enemies, and lots of them. I haven't watched this video, but fear not.- no ground enemies? Seems more like Viper Phase Two than a Raiden game.
The game looks good and sounds good, and the bullets aren't hard to see. That's the video I'm guessing. (Some of the really fast bullets are hard to see, but that's more my fault than the game's.)- bad bullet visibilty, some slowdown, I hope this is due to the video compression
- audiovisually disappointing, looks and sounds worse than any previous Seibu shmup
I haven't noticed any buzzing. The multiplier is based on how fast you can kill stuff after it comes onscreen.- Psyvariar style bullet buzzing? Nothing to see, it just sounds like that. Is this related to the multiplier?

Already preordered!
There is no better way to show them that we like what they are doing.

I'm definately going to commit to a JPSTWO once I get some income. It is a grab bag, but I know pretty well which PS1 and PS2 shmups I'd like to get, and which one's I wouldn't.
8 1/2's right, we are spoiled-this console is an arcade lover's dream come true!

OK, point well taken, but still-Raiden 3 doesn't even have HALF the number of bullets in it that ESPgaluda, Psyvariar, and other shmups that have been ported to the PS2 have, and they work perfectly.mannerbot wrote:Dave, I think you're overlooking the fact that Gradius V was programmed specifically for the PS2.

Ok, you win, you must have more technical knowledge when it comes to games then I do, because from those videos, I don't see what the heck would be so taxing on the PS2. Even so, I'm still optimistic that it'll be a good port, Mannerbot.
Of course, there is the slightly discomforting fact that there's a company involved that's chosen it's name from a type of fungus, but hopefully that doesn't reflect the quality of their work!

Dude, I was being serious; I always like to learn more about games and gaming technology. So what would make Raiden 3 more taxing on the PS2 then previous shmup ports? I'd really like to know; I'm not being sarcastic.mannerbot wrote:Pretty sure Raiden 3 is going to be a teensy bit more taxing on the PS2 than those games. Just a little.

On a previous thread, Thunder Force spoke of Raiden III's "simple polygon graphics." This seems rather apt, so it is hard to see that the PS2 will be over-taxed, just from the screenshots I've seen. So I'm curious why we should be worried about how well the PS2 will handle the task at hand.dave4shmups wrote:Dude, I was being serious; I always like to learn more about games and gaming technology. Frankly I'm more concerned about how well the PS2 port developers will handle the conversion. I could live with a slightly reduced poly count if need be. The game play is the #1 concern.professor ganson wrote:

I will wait to see if Raiden III is coming out on any of the next-gen consoles first, before making up my mind about the PS2 version.
why? simple:
The PS2 hardware is not on par with Taito's Type X hardware, which even in its basic form has a mid-range ATI Radeon GPU in it, which has features and capabilities that PS2's graphics chip does not have. Type X also has ALOT more RAM than PS2.
All of that together means Type X is well beyond PS2 hardware and therefore it is highly doubtful Raiden III will be an arcade-exact port on PS2.
http://www.system16.com/taito/hrdw_typex.html
sorry if this has already been discussed. I am a bit fussy when it comes to my arcade-to-home ports of videogames. I have no problem shelling out for arcade-exact ports, but if there is a better version of Raiden III announced for Xbox 360 or PS3, (maybe a Raiden compilation) I'll go for that.
on the other hand, maybe Raiden III is not pushing Type X hardware very much and PS2 version might therefore be extremely close, in which case I'll pick it up

: DDR266 DIMM 256MB (upgradable to DDR400 2GB)
Graphics Board : AGP Radeon 9200SE (128 MB) through to X800XT (256 MB) (complete ATI Radeon Range)
Notes : The hardware is upgradable and changable per game, from the basic setup to a pretty much state of the art setup.
