Great suggestion! Besides the ones mentioned, Xexex, Salamander 2, and Darius 2 are good choices imo.

Although a dragon week might be worth giving up hori week for.

Well I'd gladly vote for it, and I'm pretty sure others would too.

really? I specifically pointed out GII because I thought everyone would avoid GIII like the plague... that would make things slightly more interesting when voting time comes around

I've actually been wondering about the status of STGT '09...
mikwuyma wrote:If someone other than Zebra Airforce did the banners for this year's STGT, I would be offended. :P
Agreed, but is he even around anymore?
MR_Soren wrote:How about we have 1 voting/practice week for the whole contest, followed by five weeks of games? Announce a vote winner at the start of each week? I could handle voting if it won't prevent me from playing.
The only downside to this is that it might not give you enough time to really try the games and make an educated vote. Although typical voting reasons are pretty asinine anyway, so it's probably not an issue.
MR_Soren wrote:bkk, davey, and crithit... let's destroy?
Yeah, probably. Fall just wouldn't be fall without me swearing at shmups I don't like because I broke a promise to myself and signed up again. Ayanami mentioned something about resurrecting the Great Lakes Avengers (my STGT '07 team), but I don't know if there's any interest from the rest of the team. I don't think anybody else from the team participated last year except me and him.
dex wrote:
I should be able to do registration and update the scoreboard for each week. Dex is willing to make a scoreboard program, so keeping the scoreboard updated shouldn't be a problem.

I can handle the voting, but I would rather not if someone else is willing to volunteer.

Someone needs to post the results. Davey posted the results last year, and he did a great job, but I haven't contacted him about it yet.
Of course I'll do the scoreboard prog.

If you want I can do the result posting, too, if Davey doesn't want to do that, that is.
I can just reuse my code from last year, so doing it again is no big deal, even if I don't participate as a player.

Also, it was the final game of STGT '06.

As ive just started playing shmups all i play are doujins atm so a doujin only tourey would be great 4 me. And the less touhou the better as i have to use my keyboard to play em due to a crappy pad.

As for STGT ill think ill pass this year, hopefully i should be more experianced in MAME shooters by the time STGT 2010 comes up

mikwuyma wrote:About Cave: There are two problems with Cave week.

1. I think a lot of people who were in the tourney last year are tired of Cave games.

2. I can't think of three good choices for a week-long tourney.
1. I don't think people are that tired of cave: http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?t=26325

2. there are only 3 that haven't already been used before iirc?
donpachi, dodonpachi and EspRaDe.

maybe the scoring systems aren't that good for a 1 week tournament, but then a lot of interesting games are the same, like garegga, but i'd still like that to be included too.

i'll take part whatever happens and am happy to go with what the organisers decide, but i'd prefer it if there was at least the chance of some cave :)

Good God no ESPRade. Progear got dissed in 2007 in the most contraversial (and baseless) decision in the history of the shmups forum.. I'd like to see it make a comeback.

Naomi emulation in MAME is in progress (or not anymore? dunno Haze's status), but nowhere near playable speeds. You'd have better luck with some other emulators.

I'm excited about STGT. Having joined for the 2008 one, I'm not jaded yet, and have increased my skills somewhat since then.

The second loop of Progear is utterly miserable and because I'm poor at scoring the only way I can get a better score than my score in 2008 is to get a 2-ALL and well, frankly, that's just...

oh, I'll get a terrible score. It's one of the few Cave games I like and have yet to clear. Stage 5 rams it in my ass.

I'm completely baffled people are still insisting that milking bosses in ESPRaDe is necessary to get high scores. Of all 43 millions possible in this game, boss milking — as opposed to doing them the normal way — can get you at most 10-12 (I'm being really generous here, realistically it's more like 4-5). That's still over 30 million left to work with, and the highest scores on this board are all sub-30. For the tournament — as reflected by the scoreboard — it's highly unlikely over 3 or 4 participants that know the game like the back of their hand will ever get as much as 20. And that should be doable before stage 5.1 boss by scoring only in the main stages.

I mean, if you can't get it right everywhere but the boss fights, how is it a boss milking problem?

I have to agree with this, anyone who thinks they are going to spend half the game milking bosses is in for a surprise. The first couple of boss fights are ripe for milking, but anything after that is a serious challenge to stay alive due to having to dodge through the increasingly difficult spreads without holding fire to slow movement.

I just talked to Sikraiken via PM and it looks like he'll handle voting.

Davey and Zebra Airforce: Good to see you guys back.

Esp.rade: Milking the first two or three bosses is still very boring. It's not the most popular Cave game, but I guess it could work if worse comes to worse.

So here's a list of some potential hori candidates people suggested. Does anyone know how the scoring works in any of these games, or if they have any big scoring exploits? I can try out some of them, but I don't have time to try out all of them, obviously.

R-Type Leo
Parodius (there are two of them, what are they again? Isn't a big part of scoring bell juggling?)
Gradius III (I'm guessing it's some milking?)
Xexex (Breakdown told me there is way too much milking in this game)
Salamander II
Metal Black
Sector Z
Silk Worm?
Darius 2
Sengoku Blaede (I know the scoring system in this game is okay, but I think having a Psikyo game outside of Psikyo week is redundant)
G-Darius (I know this game is good, but it requires a good computer or Taito Legends 2 :()

The only other week outside of hori week I could think up of is Cave (which could work, I guess) or Manic (which would probably be mostly Cave :? ) week.
