Finally managed to pass 50mil - and what a hard-fought 50mil it was - and at the time of writing, I'm in the top ten of the Global Rankings. I don't expect to be there for very long, however, but I'm going to at least try to make the 75mil mark and get near or into the top five before I'm done with this game.

This game has a pretty entertaining scoring system - while the Fever modes fool you into thinking that blasting your way through everything at speed is the way to go, if you're playing for score, you should be aiming to make each formation last as long as possible, and plan your Fever activation carefully to trigger as many Two-Line Fevers as you can. Quite a lot of risk involved here.
Vincent Draconis wrote:Initiating a Two Lines Fever and grabbing the treasure trove of falling gold & pink items essentially guarantees you an S Rank for a stage, so it's worth all the effort.
You can also start a three-line fever mode, known as a Full House Fever, that is probably the most lucrative scoring mode in the game, which involves you, armed with nothing more than a triple-width Laser, aiming to disable a giant UFO at the top of the screen that is protected by a continually shuffling barrier of invincible giant invaders. The time limit in Full House is quite a bit longer than the other two modes, and once you disable the UFO, you will generate about ten pink chips for every second of Laser contact.

There are only two ways to activate a Full House Fever, though. And since it takes a good deal of time to set up a Full House, your time would be better spent setting up for a Two-Line Fever, instead.

That sounds great. Still no word of a US release?
Of course, that's just an opinion.

I experienced some of that when I first saw the high score boards for Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword. 6 minutes, maxed out 99999999999999? My fucking ass.
This type of thing is why I don't take online NDS scoreboards seriously.
Likewise for the PSP as long as people use cwcheat.

Seems that way, but here's something to consider. In a single run through the game, what would result in a higher score (taking into account points gained from standard Fevers): Going solely for TLFs or going solely for FHFs?

For future reference, How to get a Full House Fever:
Pick two opposing corners on the Bingo board (upper left & bottom right/bottom left & upper right), and leave those two and the middle square empty. Light everything else like so:

oo_
o_o
_oo

or

_oo
o_o
oo_

Once you have the other squares lit, then fill the middle.

Going for TLFs most likely, since you can score just as much from a TLF as you can from an FHF if played accurately. And it's far easier to set up for a two-liner from the formations you're give throughout the game. You can pick up perhaps two or three FHFs max in a complete run, but personally, you score more from aiming for the two-liners.

Although in honesty, I haven't experimented with force-changing the colours of invaders yet. Upped my record to 65mil, just on refinements.

May you also go like

_OO
OO_
O_O

and light the upper left corner ? This gives four more combination possible.

I did not play the game but I am actually surprised by what Icarus said. Is it really possible to score as well in two-lines fever as in three lines ones ? Seems curious that developpers did not give those ultimate fevers a real chance...

Wrong. Look carefully, that actually gives you a single-line Fever.
And yes, TLFs score just as well if you play them accurately, as you can get more of them throughout the game.

Anyone up for a friendly game of SIE-2 via Nintendo Wi-Fi connection right now? My handle is: PCEFX! and my all-important Friend Code is: 395333042262

Let's get some cool Space Invaders Extreme 2 versus mode on!

I like how SIE-2 has built-in support for the NDSlite Rumble Pak setup (which is one half the size of the regular full sized NDS Rumble Pak cart). That particular minature vibration device ain't marketed/sold in the USA by Nintendo of America...that's for sure. ^_~

Just checked out the SIE-2 leaderboards and here are the current scores as of April 18th, 2009:

-----------------------------
Global Rankings

Score Attack - Normal Course

Best 10

Number 1 130,695,620pts. Stg: 4-A Name: AKRDMK reg: JP

Number 2 103,048,260pts. Stg: 5-A Name: PEKE-Z Reg: JP

Number 3 88,855,710pts. Stg: 5-B Name: CHAKUN Reg: JP

Number 4 80,692,900pts. Stg: 5-A Name: K-TWO Reg: JP

Number 5 76,192,570pts. Stg: 5-B Name: NO-BU Reg: JP

Number 6 71,004,010pts. Stg: 5-A Name: F.XOR Reg: JP

Number 7 65,102,230pts. Stg: 5-A Name: ICR Reg: JP

Number 8 62,470,650pts. Stg: 5-A Name: TEJRIN Reg: JP

Number 9 60,068,440pts. Stg: 5-A Name: OIMAT Reg: JP

Number 10 57,199,460pts. Stg: 5-A Name: LJK Reg: JP

Note: None of the current top 10 SIE-2 players are using the optional Taito paddle controller.

----------------------------

Score Attack -- Extreme Course

Best 10

Number 1 77,326,170pts. Stg: 5-A Name: CHAKUN Reg: JP

Number 2 48,016,470pts. Stg: 5-A Name: PEKE-Z Reg: JP

Number 3 39,962,680pts. Stg: 5-A Name: NASUKA Reg: JP

Number 4 39,256,610pts. Stg: 5-A Name: LJK Reg: JP

Number 5 21,414,790pts. Stg: 5-A Name: K-H+UK Reg: JP

Number 6 21,076,370pts. Stg: 5-C Name: SOSUKE (P) Reg: JP

Number 7 20,596,300pts. Stg: 3 Name: YANABO Reg: JP

Number 8 17,130,500pts. Stg: 3 Name: TEJRIN Reg: JP

Number 9 16,908,100pts. Stg: 2 Name: YOH Reg: JP

Number 10 16,779,850pts. Stg: 5-C Name: . . . . . . Reg: JP

Note: Only the number 6 ranked player of SOSUKE is using the optional Taito paddle controller setup for that particular score. No one else is using it period.
----------------------------

Makes me wonder if any of the above SIE-2 players are using the NDS Action Replay cheat device to boost up/fluff up their scores. Or it could be legit for now. Hmmm...

I think I can hit 75mil in this game. Just working on refining my technique for the 3A-4A-5A route, can probably pick up about 10 lives on the way with some accurate play.

Done.

80mil is my limit at the moment, until I work out a strict route through the game, as 5A is still the worst scoring stage in the run for me. 20mil for stage2 is a current best.

In other news, someone uploaded a 124mil 5D ALL clear score to the global rankings. Pretty impressive stuff, but I wonder if there's some new scoring features in Extreme 2 that are only just being discovered, or if it's just simply abusing the Nagoya Attack bonus.

Thanks Icarus, you were right about my FHV mistake. Also congrats on your 75 millions. Can you explain how to abuse the nagoya bonus ?

just wait 'til the invaders get to the bottom of the screen, all the points you'll get after the "nagoya attack" message will be multiplied by 20. You'll have to be pretty patient (quiiiite long sometimes for them to get down the screen) & quiiiite fast, 'cause when the message appears, you're not far from dying ! (or from getting hit...)

@ Guigui : on devrait parler français ici !!! ;)

EDIT : best so far, 60.229.120, was then 10th on the leaderboard, right behind you Icarus.

Wow, really? That's horrible. I guess I'm going to preorder then. Such a shame they feel they have to price it so low. I'd have paid $40 for the first one.

It's well worth paying for the asking price for the NDS SIE-2 import...you won't regret it. As to Square Enix giving the upcoming USA release of SIE-2 a cheap-ass budget pricepoint, it might entice the casual NDS gamer into picking it up. I'll gladly pick it up when it finally arrives to compliment my JPN region SIE-2 game. ^_~

Any general strategies for Multiplayer? I played Vs. CPU a couple of times, and the basic gist seems to be shoot more stuff than your opponent. Even if this is Space Invaders, there's some more depth to it, I'm sure. And maybe I'll take on someone here (and likely get trounced) via Wi-Fi if I get bored enough.

NCSX sells the obligatory NDS paddle controller to play SIE-1 and SIE-2 properly:

http://www.ncsxshop.com/cgi-bin/shop/TCPP-20018.html

Regardless of what color it is, the Taito Paddle controller works like a charm. I'm surprised how Taito managed to replicate that weighted down flywheel in minature form for the NDS handheld like how it is with the full-sized rotary spinner setup on the full sized arcade cabinet setup. Very sliky smooth and more responsive than if you were to play with just the d-pad on the NDS or the NDS lite variant. Too bad Nintendo axed GBA compatilibility with the NDSi variant though so it's a no-go with the optional Taito Paddle controller. ^_~
