Any decent shmups on the Wii ?

Post by IronGiant »

Either commercially available or via Homebrew? There's Tyrian on homebrew of course, haven't forgotten that one. :)

If you have access to your local gaming shops, you find that are a few commercial released shmup titles by the name of Shikigami No Shiro 3/Castle of Shikigami 3, (Milestone's) Ultimate Shooting Collection and a handful of others.

Don't forget Blast Works. For $20 it's totally worth it for its great stage editor and playing Kenta Cho games on a controller. Illmatic Envelope is getting a US release as well now.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

Plus Gradius Rebirth on WiiWare and umpteen games on the VC.

If you can play Japanese titles there's also Illvelo, which is another Milestone game. Plays a lot like Rajirugi.

Good point about Japanese titles -I can play these and am happy to import, so the more the merrier of them too. :)

Thanks for the tips so far.

Not many on CD's, although Geometry Wars - Galaxies is an excellent one. If you are really desperate for shmups on the Wii, I would recommend you download Virtual Console or WiiWare titles, for the sake of variety.

Some game called Animales de La Muerte is coming out sometime this year.. it's a top-view shmup, similar to Robotron and Smash TV, although the theme is VERY bizarre. Think of Mexican children with automatic rifles shooting zombie animals in a zoo + tons of blood and gore. Some guy here didn't think it was a shmup, but I guess he's never played Robotron or Smash TV before..

I downloaded Gate of Thunder, R-Type III and Soldier Blade on Wii VC. Nothing wrong with those games. Thinking about downloading Bio Hazard Battle as well.

Oh yeah, Gradius Rebirth is a lot of fun too. Not sure about Star Soldier R.

There are a few great games for the JP Wii that for some bizarre reason haven't come out elsewhere, but the only actual shmup I can think of is Illvelo. I'll hold off on suggestions unless you want them since this is a shmup-oriented thread though.

More than happy for you to list any decent Japanese only Wii games, shmups or not. :)

Yeah, I'd be curious to hear about non-shmup Jap exclusives as well.

Well then, here's my little list:

Rei: Tsukihami no Kamen (Fatal Frame Wii): A really good entry in the Fatal Frame series. Situation of the title overseas is all sorts of messed up (google it if you're interested), it's a shame they haven't released it elsewhere.

Disaster: Day of Crisis: An action game that has a bunch of different gameplay modes. It's about terrorists seizing weapons of mass destruction when a series of natural disasters hit and stop the normal defense measures from working.

Another Code: R - The sequel to the Another Code DS game (which did come out in English, but I forget the title). A solid, but very text heavy, adventure & puzzle game.

Paul no Daibouken (sometimes Paul is translate as Pole) - WiiWare platformer with a great sense of humor that makes fun of 8-bit platformers. Lots of Mario jokes. My fiance and I played this one together and we had a blast. 0% chance of it being translated imho, which is unfortunate.

Ougon no Kizuna - Action-RPG (more action) from Jaleco. I just got this one in the mail, no idea if it's any good or not, as I haven't played it yet. I'll just list it on faith.

428 - Fuusa Shibuya no Naka De: The visual novel that got a 40/40 in Famitsu. Incredibly well done and well written with a good storyline, but it's still a visual novel. That is, there's not a lot of gameplay and the majority of the time you're reading text & staring at still pictures. Not for everyone but the quality of the writing makes it fantastic if you're interested.

Captain Rainbow - A very quirky adventure title from the Chibi-Robo team. It's not an amazing game, but it's got so much personality and strange humor that it's a blast anyways.

One I haven't played but has gotten a decent amount of positive buzz: Arc Rise Fantasia: Very, very traditional JRPG from one of the guys behind the early titles (maybe just the first one) in the Tales series. Have heard mixed things about whether it's getting an English port or not.

-------

And a few that were formerly Japan only but just got announced for elsewhere:

Tatsunoko vs Capcom - Yay crazy beat-em-up!

Fuurai no Shiren 3 - Waaaay easier than the other Fuurai no Shiren games, and the graphics are -terrible-, but the game is still a lot of fun.

Fragile - An adventure game that's said to have a great story and worldview but mediocre gameplay. Haven't played it myself but it did look interesting. Is officially getting a US release now.

Contra Rebirth - I don't think this is officially announced for anywhere other than Japan but there's a 99.9% chance it will be released elsewhere. Classic style Contra WiiWare game. Totally awesome. Gradius Rebirth took many months to come out elsewhere, so this one might take a while too.

Yep!

Has the price for it dropped overseas yet, though? The only downer for the PAL Blast Works is the special save with the movement editor unlocked won't work as of yet (still working on a solution for that.) :?

I figure you'd probably be more interested in just playing it than making stuff with it, though, so no worries. A solid year's worth of user-made goodies = more bang for your buck, too. :)

Wiiware/Virtual Console is a great resource for classic shmups on the Wii. Star Soldier, Super Star Soldier, Gradius (NES), Gradius 3, R-Type, Axelay--really great selection. What's even better is that a few slightly more spendy titles such as the PC Engine's Cho Aniki and Gradius 2: Gofer no Yabou have made US release under the VC. Paying 900 Wii points is certainly preferable to trying to track down a Pc Engine, CD-ROM attachment, and the games themselves.

Gradius Rebirth is also awesome.

UFO Interactive is also releasing Saint along with Illevlo later this year.

I believe it's the sequel to Shin Chuuka Taisen that Star-Fish made. I can't remember the Japanese name though, anybody know if it's an improvement? YouTube link if possible for gameplay footage?
